Hinweis der Redaktion

  1. Name Previous occupation Uploading videos since 2011 Uploading regularly since September
  2. Broken down, vlog stands for a video log, or video blog. Basically sharing anything via a video rather than through writing about it. Currently only one outlet (that I know of, pays you when you vlog and that is YouTube)
  3. It’s easier to set up a channel and create awesome content when you love what you’re uploading. So what is it that makes your heart beat faster? Brainstorm how you can incorporate the things you get really excited about creating into an entertaining, consistent and shareable concept. And don’t forget about your viewers, how do you want to make them feel? What do you want them to remember about your channel? Why should they watch and subscribe? When you don’t enjoy it, it shows and your videos don’t get as many views. In the past YouTube paid based on the videos with the most clicks. Now YouTube looks at watch time – the actual amount of time people spend watching your videos – rather than only the number of clicks. It gives them a more accurate guage of how a video performs. YouTube suggests videos in search and recommendations that are likely to increase how much overall time a viewer spends watching and uses watch time to improve the ranking of videos in search and recommendations. If people click on your videos and stick around to watch, your videos are more likely to appear more often in suggested and recommended videos and growth in new views could increase. If your videos drive more watch time or inspire your viewers to check out a related video (either yours or someone else’s) your channel gets an advantage! It is a great way to add a more personal element to your blog. Embedding YouTube videos into blog posts give readers a real insight into your life and in turn make you more relatable. Do you really want your children to appear on YouTube? There are plenty of people who do and who have wonderful family vlogs (Shaytards, Hannah Maggs, Mrs Meldrum), but before you do, think of the consequences for them and if it is discovered by their friends that their parents vlog. People will find you. My husband’s first girlfriend from university randomly found me on YouTube talking about going on a detox. It was a slightly awkward conversation which followed! Comments on YouTube are some of the nastiest I have encountered. Perhaps I have been lucky with my blog, but I have only ever had troll comments on YouTube.
  4. You can film on any camera (DSLR, flipcam,) I film on my mobile phone. It’s always with me, it’s easy to carry everywhere. I do have to take an elastic band to attach it to my tripod! A tripod is useful but not necessary if you can’t afford it. I find it incredibly useful when I am filming sit down vlogs. Many phones come with editing software built in. You can get good free software, such as WMM and imovie and you can also pay for more professional software, such as PremierePro and FinalCut. I was trained in Avid at the BBC and I have found that PremierePro is the most similar. Check out deals, if you are a student then you can get some very good deals.
  5. This might sound really simple, but make sure your camera is filming in landscape and also with the widest screen that it can. It will save black bars being around your video. Are you at home? Outside in the garden? One of my first ever radio interviews was with a Premiership football manager. He insisted that we sat outside. When I got back my producer was not happy. You could hear trains going past in the distance, birds tweeting and the wind gently blowing. It was poor quality audio, even though the actual interview was good. film with a window behind the camera. If you can, don’t film at night or when the light is poor. It’s incredibly difficult to adjust the light once you have filmed, it’s better to do it before. If you are not relaxed it will show. Make sure you breathe! I know it sounds really silly, but my first few videos I raced through so fast I found myself getting out of breath! Just pretend you are on the phone or skyping a best friend, that way you will act naturally and honestly. If you are shy, or feel uncomfortable, do what Beyonce does and find your alter ego - pretend to be that showgirl inside of you. She adopts a persona called Sasha Fierce, who is the extroverted stage version of Beyonce. I am not saying you need to twerk at the camera, just be a bigger version of yourself. film.
  6. Boxes, walls, chests of drawers, beds, I have a special timelapse egg timer. It has a cup attached to the top of it with sellotape and a blob of blu tack at the top to stick my camera too. It films as it moves around, meaning you can speed up a family dinner and include more footage. I saw this at my first BlogCamp. Cover a cardboard box in tin foil and let the light reflect onto you as you film.
  7. Clear and consistent branding (icon and banner) Build a rapport with your viewers by creating create consistent branding elements (like the graphics, tone and style) on your channel icon, videos and video thumbnail. Thumbnails are so important, they are the advert for that video. They need to stand out from others when people are searching on YouTube. Make it enticing. Text and a person is very important. Use a welcome video and optimise description and video – the description is your chance to promote the other places people can find you. Organise content into easy-to-navigate sections Add relevant website links Promote friends and collaborators with featured channels Use an endslate or card at the end of your video to influence what to watch Upload to a schedule – when viewers know which days you upload, they will come back on those days to watch your latest video.
  8. Here is an example of great channel branding, following all the examples I have previously given. Clear and consistent branding Use a welcome video and make sure you optimise the description and video title (the welcome video wasn’t shown when I logged in because I am already subscribed. Organise content into easy-to-navigate sections Add relevant website links Promote friends and collaborators with featured channels Use an endslate or card at the end of your video to influence what your viewers watch next
  9. (so you want music on your videos – where do you find it) How copyright impacts on what you can earn? If you use music which you do not have the copyright for, there are a few things which could happen. Your video might be removed from the listings. A copyright claim may be filed. You can accept this and then any money made on the video goes to the person who owns the copyright. The list YouTube have explains what the restrictions of using that music is. It could be that it is not available in certain countries, or that it is simply not allowed on videos. The YouTube editor music library has a whole host of different music to download, all of which is free and you can monetise your videos when you use it. – You can search for music (make sure that you are searching accurately – for creative commons music) This can be used and has no impact on your earnings – make sure you credit the artist whose music you have used in the description bar on YouTube.
  10. (most of my first videos were way too quiet and it’s something I still often see.
