âLOST LITTLE CHILDâ
The history of music video begun in 1894 with
the first example of illustrated song when
images were projected on screen to a live
performance of the song âLost Little Childâ
Writer Edward. B. Marks and Composer,
Joseph. W. Stern cam up with this idea of
illustrating the song and performance with still
images.
3. 1926
âTALKIESâ
Many short musical films called âtalkiesâ
were produced. They had vocalists,
bands and dancers and were proved to
be very popular.
The first known talkie was called
âThe Jazz Singerâ
4. 1929
âSCREEN SONGSâ
âScreen Songsâ were introduced which
were animated musical films with the
lyrics written at the bottom of the
visuals.
The lyrics allowed the audience to join in
singing and have a more enjoyable
experience.
The lyrics were followed by the
âbouncing ballâ which indicated to the
audience which words to sing and when.
It also followed the beat of the song.
5. 1929-1940
âST LOUIS BLUESâ
Many artists featured in dramatic
performances of their songs.
The first example of this is Bessie Smithâs
music video of her song âSt Louis Bluesâ
This is the first example of music videos similar
to ours today.
6. 1940
PROMOTIONAL CLIPS
Jazz artists began to promote
themselves through producing short
promotional clips.
7. 1950âS
TELEVISION - MUSIC VIDEOS
The rise of television increased the
popularity of music and allowed new
stars to be exposed.
Artist, Tony Bennett claims to have
created the first music video when he
was filmed walking down the serpentine
in Hyde Park. The clip was sent to UK
and US television stations and therefore.
aired on UK and US TV shows.
The second music video was âJailhouse
Rockâ by Elvis Presley.
8. 1964- 1965
THE BEATLES
1964- The Beatles created the first
modern music video with the motion
picture âHard Days Nightâ
This set the standards for future music
videos.
1965- The Beatles film 10 films to
promote album releases.
9. 1981-MTV LAUNCHED
24hr broadcast of music meant that
music videos began to take a central
role in musical marketing.
MTV is still a popular music channel
today.
10. 1983
MICHAEL JACKSONS âTHRILLERâ
THE MOST POPULAR AND SUCCESSFUL MUSIC VIDEO OF
ALL TIME IS RELEASED.
11. 1985- VH1is launched- softer
music which appealed to an older
demographic.
1988- MTV launches YO!
MTV Raps which led to the rise in
hip hop popularity.
1992- Rise of music video
directors. Listed in credits for the
first time.

industry. It promotes artists and their
representations and allows them to
reach bigger audiences. It is likely to
be apart of the music industry for
many more years if not forever.
