3. Discrimination Description This Intellectual skill is the ability to make different responses to differences within a specific category. Examples In easier terms, this is the ability to see the difference between a green chair and a green couch. Enhancing Student Learning To use the ability of discrimination in student learning, pre-assessment is a must. We need to know what students already know on a topic, in order to allow them to distinguish between the old information and the new information.

4. Concrete Concept Description This Intellectual skill is the ability to classify based on distinguishing features. Examples In easier terms, this is the ability to recognize the difference between rocks and water, or being able to pick out the marshmallows from your cereal. Enhancing Student Learning To use the ability of concrete concept in student learning would be the ability to recognize Math homework from Science or English homework. The students should understand the how to recognize the specific academic subject that they are experiencing in order to use the appropriate set of old information to develop on the new information within a specific category.

5. Rule-Using Description This Intellectual skill is the ability to use rules and/or principles to respond to specific situations. Examples In easier terms, this is the ability to use the appropriate action towards any given situation. It is a lot like looking at a cookbook and knowing what you need to do next in order to cook or bake. Enhancing Student Learning To use the ability of rule-using in student learning, is to make sure that the teachers and parents have given the students the appropriate information and knowledge to view a situation, and know what step they are expected to take next. In Math, that means giving a student the problem 2 + 6 = X, and knowing that you have given that student the proper tools needed to know how to solve for X.

6. Problem Solving Description This Intellectual skill is the ability combine all lower level rules and skills in order to solve a problem to a situation that has not yet been encountered. Examples In easier terms, this is the ability to take all prior knowledge and learned skills to know the appropriate actions to take in order to solve a problem. Let’s say you give a student a grocery list and three twenty dollar bills. The student should be able to know what steps they need to take to get where they need to go, and how to get everything on the list within the specific budget that they were given. Enhancing Student Learning To use the ability of problem solving in student learning, teachers and parents need to establish the importance of remembering the new and old knowledge and skills, so that the students can use them to appropriately tackle tasks that they approach in a confident and successful manner.
