Lambeth Council for a 3-year

objection to this at a poorly-
publicised public consultation
meeting last month. Grounds
for objection included litter,
drug taking and other anti-
social behaviour by Kisstory-
goers in neighbouring streets,
traffic issues, the removal of
a large part of the Common
from public use for almost 3
weeks and, of course, noise.
The FoSC is very concerned
that the Common has still
not recovered from damage
by events held last year and
propose a fallow year of
non-use for events before it
should be subjected to further
stress. Lambeth events’
representative at the meeting
was asked how much money
the organisers paid for the
use of the Common, and how
much was returned to the
Common in compensation.
The reply was that the info. is
“commercially confidential”,

will reveal all in due course.

We recently welcomed a new food business
in streatham, London smoke and Cure, who
held a smoke-themed winter supper club
at their smokery in the atmospheric
cobbled Gleneldon mews. The “Inside
the smokehouse” pop-up offered us
the opportunity to try treats from the
smoker and get some tips on how
to smoke your own food at home.
around a dozen diners sampled smoky
delights at an evening co-hosted by
owner ross mitchell and local chef, forager,
and fermenter, rachel de Thample.
After a welcoming drink, we indulged in five
courses of smoked and cured foods.
Tastings included smoked pickles and
homemade kraut, followed by a most delicious
cold-smoked salmon with dried bergamot, lemon
aioli, winter herbs and wild leaves with
a lemon verbena dressing. To follow these, ross’
maple fennel bacon accompanied a celeriac and
sage carbonara and purple kale
as a delicious main course.
Feeling replete, we needed a break
before indulging in a scrumptious pud
of cinnamon meringues with smoked apple
and bonfire toffee. The evening was rounded off
with a wonderful selection of smoked english
cheeses, preserves and walnuts.
To encourage us to try smoking produce at home
we were given a sample of wood chips. many
types of wood are used for smoking including
alder, beech, and oak chips as well as fruit
woods such as apple, cherry and plum.
London smoke and Cure only use locally
sourced British ingredients. They have a well
laid out website where they offer a wide range of
smoked fish and meats, cheeses, gifts, hampers
hand-made and prepared to order with a
wholesale option. While there is no retail facility
in streatham, there are hands-on workshops
available at the smoke house where you can
learn curing techniques for salami, bacon and
cured salt beef.
London smoke and Cure features at the Crystal
palace Food market and monthly at Catford Food
market.

streatham action Transport group has sent their
damning report on streatham’s Train services
and demand for measures to compensate
streatham rail users to the Department for
Transport, network rail, and GTr. The report
captures the extent of problems experienced
by streatham’s rail commuters from mid-2018
onwards based on a survey of 500 commuters
and data from network rail:
· 36% of trains through streatham were either
cancelled or severely late after the 20 may
first timetable change by GTR
· 36% of respondents to the survey were forced
to change their route to work from streatham
and stopped using GTr services.
Despite service improvements towards the end
of 2018, streatham is very poorly served and
we have asked network rail to bring forward
signalling infrastructure upgrades by five years
on the south London metro lines. GTr have
been asked to reconsider its timetable to
ensure that streatham’s commuters return to
using their services. The DfT should support
this demand and review the current franchise
arrangements with GTr again if there is no
evidence of improvements by august 2019.

harold John milford was born in streatham and
brought up at 67 medora road in Tulse hill. he
married marion heather in 1940, the same year
he joined the raF, and was commissioned as
a Pilot Officer on 9th August 1941. He became
famous for being part of The Great escape from
nazi prisoner of War Camp stalag 111 in sagan,
poland,immortalised in a 1963 hollywood
blockbuster starring steve mcQueen, James
Garner and sir richard attenborough.
milford arrived at stalag 111 in october
1942 after his bomber was shot-down while
attacking a power station at Chocques on
september 22nd. The crew bailed out, buried
their parachutes and split-up. The pilot evaded
capture and returned to england but milford and
the gunner were pulled from a haystack and
imprisoned in the camp.
on the night of the 24/25th march 1944
milford was one of 76 men who escaped. he
survived freezing weather and blizzards but was
recaptured in the afternoon of the 27th march.
early on the morning of 6 april 1944 he was
murdered by the Breslau Gestapo - 50 of the
escapees were shot by the Gestapo. originally
cremated and buried at sagan, he is now buried
in part of the poznan old Garrison Cemetery.
The photograph of the prisoners of War at the

Since 2016 English Heritage
has been asking the public
to propose women to feature
on blue plaques - only 14% of
London’s blue plaques are for
women. Lambeth’s shortlist
includes several names with
Streatham connections:
Ursula Vernon Eason
(1910-1993) BBC radio
broadcaster, television
producer, and administrator.
A pioneer of television
programmes for deaf children
in the 1950s and 60s, she
lived at 83 Mount Nod Rd.
Joyce Lankaster Brisley
(1896-1978) Writer and
illustrator of the Milly-Molly-
Mandy series of children’s
books. Her sisters Ethel and
Nina were also illustrators - all
studied at the Lambeth School
of Art and lived with their
mother at 108 Lewin Rd.
Dorothy Louise Meiha

family lived at “Limatburg”
around 1884 at 34 Ambleside
Ave.
Leonora Tyson (1883-
1959) Suffragette. Lived with
her mother and siblings at 37
Drewstead Rd.
Angela Carter (1940-
1992) was a novelist who
wrote The Magic Toyshop,
Nights at the Circus and
Wise Children. She attended
Streatham and Clapham High
School and apparently English
Heritage have considered and
agreed a Blue Plaque.
Hannah Barlow (1851-
1916) The first woman artist
to work for Doulton in 1871
- sister Florence followed in
1873, and sister Lucy also
worked there. They lived at
55 Loughborough Park from
1880-1893. Henry Doulton
lived at “Woodlands” in
Streatham on the edge of
Tooting Common
Christina Broom (1862
–1939) The first UK female
press photographer, noted for
pictures of the suffragettes.
Circa 1901 she and her
husband opened a stationers’
shop at 87 Streatham High
Road and sold postcards made
from Christina’s photos.
Patricia Hayes (1909-
1998) Actress and RADA Gold
medal winner, she lived with
her parents at 129 Pathfield
Rd.
Lambeth will shortly be
considering a borough plaque
scheme which allows the
public to put-forward names
for a plaque (outside the
aegis of English Heritage).
Wandsworth’s scheme has
resulted in several plaques
recognizing individuals and
historic events in the Borough.
The scheme will add to the
single blue plaque for
Sir Arnold Bax in Pendennis
Road and other plaques
placed by the Streatham
Society.

I chose a 60 minute Fusion stone massage at the spa and
was fortunate enough to have emma herself. The massage
room was a calming space and emma talked me through
the treatment and made me feel very comfortable.
The massage was thorough, invigorating
and de-stressing - all at the same time and
emma ensured I was enjoying it throughout. she used a
vegan VOYA organic oil which smelled divine.
I was given 15 minutes at the end to just be in the moment
and enjoy the benefits of the massage.
after dressing I was offered a lovely green
smoothie shot and again there was no rush
to vacate the spa. I was also given a little
goodie bag with some sample products.
That night I had the most
amazing sleep in a long time!

Lotus & Lavender

@lotus_lavender_
after such a glamorous
refurbishment, we couldn’t
help but visit Lotus &
Lavender, previously known as
american Top nails. I booked for
a Gel manicure appointment over the
phone, £28.
The staff were welcoming, and my
manicure was done by Tommy,
who’s taken over the business from
his dad. he was friendly and
attentive – I’m quite particular with
my nails and he was more than
happy to grant my requests.
The refurbished salon looks lush and
vibrant – fitting for their clientele.
They’re hoping to have a spa
downstairs soon – watch this space!
S.Spa @ Wellbeing95
95 Streatham Hill, SW2 4UD,
020 8674 7814, @SliqueSpa
s.spa is one of only two spas with an
infrared sauna in streatham. I tried their Bronze spa
experience package - 30 minutes in the infrared sauna, a
30-minute massage and a 30-minute facial.
Infrared saunas use light to heat the body without warming
the surrounding air - perfect if you can’t stand hot air from
a regular sauna. I usually last about 10 minutes in a sauna
but did this session without a struggle. The heat has a
meditative effect and prepares the mind for the massage.
Therapist ayshia is a muscle magician who really cares
about her clients. her new meditation massage is getting
great reviews too – perfect for depression and anxiety.
Finally, I had a Vino Perfect Claudalie facial. By this point,
I was half asleep! my skin was soft and super-glowy, I felt
rested and as light as air, and a
week on, still feel refreshed. For
£65, that’s a win!

This sleek and spacious salon has
a luxurious feel to it. The reception
was warm and welcoming, and the
service was great. at £45 I was very
happy with my wash, cut and blow dry
which included a mini treatment and
straightening.
Her Definition has a huge Instagram
following and have created some
amazing styles for some of the
hippest names in fashion and
celebrity. This is a salon based in

clientele. They regularly do bridal

an established and advanced

winning health professionals, The Leigham practice offers
podiatry, physiotherapy, osteopathy, massage, acupuncture,
aesthetics, and laser therapies.
I’m having a course of Laser Facial rejuvenation -
£75 a session with 10% off a course of
4, or 7 treatments for the price of 6.
True to Leigham practice form, their beauty therapist, elena,
has worked with both the Vaishaly Clinic and Eve Lom.
she explained that low level laser therapy reverses visible
signs of ageing and slows the ageing process of the skin – I
should begin to see results after four treatments. I’ll be
giving you a full report and reveal the before (scary!) and
after photos at the end of the course.
You are a commercial tenant running a business
from premises and you now want your landlord
to grant you a written lease for a fixed term. You
may have been paying rent monthly or quarterly
for some years, but your landlord has still not
given you a fixed term lease. What can you do to
force the landlord’s hand?
rights under a periodic tenancy
It is likely that you are a periodic tenant and
if you have been in occupation of business
premises paying rent for more than 12 months,
you will have become a protected business
tenant with the rights granted by the Landlord &
Tenant act 1954 part 11. as such the landlord
cannot simply terminate your lease by giving you
one month’s notice. They would need to serve
you with a statutory notice under the 1954 act
giving you not less than 6 nor more than 12
months’ notice and you will then have the right
to apply to the court for a new lease on terms to
be agreed or decided upon by the court.
Can you require the landlord to grant a new
lease?
If the time has come that you need the
certainty of a fixed term lease, perhaps in
order to grow or sell your business, you will
not be able to serve on the landlord a notice
under section 26 of the 1954 act requesting a
new lease. The right to do this only applies to
tenants whose tenancy was granted for a fixed
term exceeding one year or for any term and
thereafter from year to year.
so, what should the tenant do?
Negotiate with your landlord
a periodic protected tenant
should be in a strong position
to negotiate a new lease
with the landlord who would
be keen to regularise the
position. Without a lease, the
landlord cannot unilaterally
increase the rent, or regulate
the use of the premises or
prevent the tenant from sharing
occupation or assigning its tenancy.
It is unlikely that the landlord could easily sell
its interest in the property while a protected
periodic tenant continues in occupation for an
indefinite period.
Taking legal advice
It is best to seek legal advice first before
finalising terms with your landlord to ensure that
the terms of the new lease are not onerous and
reflect the terms of your existing oral tenancy.
Where there is a dispute with the landlord taking
steps to terminate the tenancy without offering
acceptable new lease terms, it is important
to seek legal advice to your rights and
how to protect your position.

Streatham RedHawks Ice Hockey Report
David Carr
Streatham ended the NIHL South 1 season
in sixth place after a rollercoaster year in
which Alex Roberts and Andreas Siagris were
standouts. Roberts was the fifth top scorer
in the league, while Siagris was selected to
represent GB Men’s University hockey team
in the Universiade in Russia, where he scored
a goal in a win over the Swedes. It was an
experience he will never forget.
“It was a great event”, explained the 21-year-
old student, “The welcoming and opening
ceremonies were wonderful as were the
athletes’ village, ice rink and the competition
excellent…”
Streatham has also announced a change
in coach for next year as incumbent Jeremy
Cornish has decided to step down for personal
reasons and will be replaced by current captain
Adam Carr.
"Adam has a wealth of hockey knowledge and
has been working closely with Jeremy over the
past two seasons", explained General Manager
Graham D'Anger, "I feel he will make a great
coach and will endeavour to give him the same
support I've given Jeremy. With his experience
on and off the ice, Adam knows what it takes to
win, and we are looking forward to challenging
for, or indeed adding to some long awaited
silverware next season."
Streatham will begin their season again in
September so keep an eye out over the summer
for details of fixtures and ticketing.

  • 6. 6 | heart streatham which attracts c.10,000 people, have applied to Lambeth Council for a 3-year licence. There was general objection to this at a poorly- publicised public consultation meeting last month. Grounds for objection included litter, drug taking and other anti- social behaviour by Kisstory- goers in neighbouring streets, traffic issues, the removal of a large part of the Common from public use for almost 3 weeks and, of course, noise. The FoSC is very concerned that the Common has still not recovered from damage by events held last year and propose a fallow year of non-use for events before it should be subjected to further stress. Lambeth events’ representative at the meeting was asked how much money the organisers paid for the use of the Common, and how much was returned to the Common in compensation. The reply was that the info. is “commercially confidential”, though surely a FOI request will reveal all in due course. The Safer Valley Road campaign’s recent public meeting addressed the problems of speeding, road rage, pollution and increasingly heavy traffic in Valley Road.  The 20mph speed limit is not enforced and speed bumps are ineffective. Sign the petition on change.org to demand measures to slow down and reduce traffic on Valley Road. Lambeth Council have installed new 20mph banners on some Streatham roads including Leigham Court Rd. and Streatham Common North side - these are excellent reminders, and we'd love some more on Valley Rd. please. • 8. 8 | hearT sTreaTham We recently welcomed a new food business in streatham, London smoke and Cure, who held a smoke-themed winter supper club at their smokery in the atmospheric cobbled Gleneldon mews. The “Inside the smokehouse” pop-up offered us the opportunity to try treats from the smoker and get some tips on how to smoke your own food at home. around a dozen diners sampled smoky delights at an evening co-hosted by owner ross mitchell and local chef, forager, and fermenter, rachel de Thample. After a welcoming drink, we indulged in five courses of smoked and cured foods. Tastings included smoked pickles and homemade kraut, followed by a most delicious cold-smoked salmon with dried bergamot, lemon aioli, winter herbs and wild leaves with a lemon verbena dressing. To follow these, ross’ maple fennel bacon accompanied a celeriac and sage carbonara and purple kale as a delicious main course. Feeling replete, we needed a break before indulging in a scrumptious pud of cinnamon meringues with smoked apple and bonfire toffee. The evening was rounded off with a wonderful selection of smoked english cheeses, preserves and walnuts. To encourage us to try smoking produce at home we were given a sample of wood chips. many types of wood are used for smoking including alder, beech, and oak chips as well as fruit woods such as apple, cherry and plum. London smoke and Cure only use locally sourced British ingredients. They have a well laid out website where they offer a wide range of smoked fish and meats, cheeses, gifts, hampers hand-made and prepared to order with a wholesale option. While there is no retail facility in streatham, there are hands-on workshops available at the smoke house where you can learn curing techniques for salami, bacon and cured salt beef. • 10. 10 | hearT sTreaTham streatham action Transport group has sent their damning report on streatham’s Train services and demand for measures to compensate streatham rail users to the Department for Transport, network rail, and GTr. The report captures the extent of problems experienced by streatham’s rail commuters from mid-2018 onwards based on a survey of 500 commuters and data from network rail: · 36% of trains through streatham were either cancelled or severely late after the 20 may first timetable change by GTR · 36% of respondents to the survey were forced to change their route to work from streatham and stopped using GTr services. Despite service improvements towards the end of 2018, streatham is very poorly served and we have asked network rail to bring forward signalling infrastructure upgrades by five years on the south London metro lines. GTr have been asked to reconsider its timetable to ensure that streatham’s commuters return to using their services. The DfT should support this demand and review the current franchise arrangements with GTr again if there is no evidence of improvements by august 2019. see the full report at www.streathamaction.org.uk. • 14. 14 | heart streatham Since 2016 English Heritage has been asking the public to propose women to feature on blue plaques - only 14% of London’s blue plaques are for women. Lambeth’s shortlist includes several names with Streatham connections: Ursula Vernon Eason (1910-1993) BBC radio broadcaster, television producer, and administrator. A pioneer of television programmes for deaf children in the 1950s and 60s, she lived at 83 Mount Nod Rd. Joyce Lankaster Brisley (1896-1978) Writer and illustrator of the Milly-Molly- Mandy series of children’s books. Her sisters Ethel and Nina were also illustrators - all studied at the Lambeth School of Art and lived with their mother at 108 Lewin Rd. Dorothy Louise Meiha (1876- ). Suffragette. The family lived at “Limatburg” around 1884 at 34 Ambleside Ave. Leonora Tyson (1883- 1959) Suffragette. Lived with her mother and siblings at 37 Drewstead Rd. Angela Carter (1940- 1992) was a novelist who wrote The Magic Toyshop, Nights at the Circus and Wise Children. She attended Streatham and Clapham High School and apparently English Heritage have considered and agreed a Blue Plaque. Hannah Barlow (1851- 1916) The first woman artist to work for Doulton in 1871 - sister Florence followed in 1873, and sister Lucy also worked there. They lived at 55 Loughborough Park from 1880-1893. Henry Doulton lived at “Woodlands” in Streatham on the edge of Tooting Common Christina Broom (1862 –1939) The first UK female press photographer, noted for pictures of the suffragettes. Circa 1901 she and her husband opened a stationers’ shop at 87 Streatham High Road and sold postcards made from Christina’s photos. Patricia Hayes (1909- 1998) Actress and RADA Gold medal winner, she lived with her parents at 129 Pathfield Rd. Lambeth will shortly be considering a borough plaque scheme which allows the public to put-forward names for a plaque (outside the aegis of English Heritage). Wandsworth’s scheme has resulted in several plaques recognizing individuals and historic events in the Borough. The scheme will add to the single blue plaque for Sir Arnold Bax in Pendennis Road and other plaques placed by the Streatham Society. This one-hour treatment is designed to treat dehydration and nourish the skin. Therapist alba took me downstairs to the phytomer Treatment room, which is one of four beautifully designed spaces in a subterranean oasis under our bustling high street. The treatment began with a deeply relaxing back massage and the application of self-heating mud to the spinal column to detoxify the system. It was an incredibly indulgent and luxurious treatment which is £66.50 for a single session or can be booked as a course of 5 for £270. I floated back to work with my skin feeling younger and my mind calmer. is an organisation created by local businesses to help make Streatham an even better place to live, work and do business. part of that role is to encourage all of you lovely readers to get out and explore what our fabulous high road has to offer. The massage room was a calming space and emma talked me through the treatment and made me feel very comfortable. The massage was thorough, invigorating and de-stressing - all at the same time and emma ensured I was enjoying it throughout. she used a vegan VOYA organic oil which smelled divine. I was given 15 minutes at the end to just be in the moment and enjoy the benefits of the massage. after dressing I was offered a lovely green smoothie shot and again there was no rush to vacate the spa. I was also given a little goodie bag with some sample products. That night I had the most amazing sleep in a long time! emma Wilson Urban spa thoroughly deserves their many awards, including south east Boutique salon of the Year at the 2017 and London Day spa of the Year 2018 at the professional Beauty awards for their outstanding professionalism, skill and customer service.

Lotus & Lavender 51 Streatham Hill, SW2 4TS, 020 8671 7006 @lotus_lavender_ after such a glamorous refurbishment, we couldn’t help but visit Lotus & Lavender, previously known as american Top nails. I booked for a Gel manicure appointment over the phone, £28. The staff were welcoming, and my manicure was done by Tommy, who’s taken over the business from his dad. he was friendly and attentive – I’m quite particular with my nails and he was more than happy to grant my requests. The refurbished salon looks lush and vibrant – fitting for their clientele. They’re hoping to have a spa downstairs soon – watch this space! I tried their Bronze spa experience package - 30 minutes in the infrared sauna, a 30-minute massage and a 30-minute facial. Infrared saunas use light to heat the body without warming the surrounding air - perfect if you can’t stand hot air from a regular sauna. I usually last about 10 minutes in a sauna but did this session without a struggle. The heat has a meditative effect and prepares the mind for the massage. Therapist ayshia is a muscle magician who really cares about her clients. her new meditation massage is getting great reviews too – perfect for depression and anxiety. Finally, I had a Vino Perfect Claudalie facial. By this point, I was half asleep! my skin was soft and super-glowy, I felt rested and as light as air, and a week on, still feel refreshed. For £65, that’s a win! Her Definition 135 Streatham High Rd, SW16 1HJ – 020 8677 3700 @herdefinition This sleek and spacious salon has a luxurious feel to it. • 18. You are a commercial tenant running a business from premises and you now want your landlord to grant you a written lease for a fixed term. You may have been paying rent monthly or quarterly for some years, but your landlord has still not given you a fixed term lease. What can you do to force the landlord’s hand? rights under a periodic tenancy It is likely that you are a periodic tenant and if you have been in occupation of business premises paying rent for more than 12 months, you will have become a protected business tenant with the rights granted by the Landlord & Tenant act 1954 part 11. as such the landlord cannot simply terminate your lease by giving you one month’s notice. They would need to serve you with a statutory notice under the 1954 act giving you not less than 6 nor more than 12 months’ notice and you will then have the right to apply to the court for a new lease on terms to be agreed or decided upon by the court. Can you require the landlord to grant a new lease? If the time has come that you need the certainty of a fixed term lease, perhaps in order to grow or sell your business, you will not be able to serve on the landlord a notice under section 26 of the 1954 act requesting a new lease. The right to do this only applies to tenants whose tenancy was granted for a fixed term exceeding one year or for any term and thereafter from year to year. so, what should the tenant do? Negotiate with your landlord a periodic protected tenant should be in a strong position to negotiate a new lease with the landlord who would be keen to regularise the position. Without a lease, the landlord cannot unilaterally increase the rent, or regulate the use of the premises or prevent the tenant from sharing occupation or assigning its tenancy. It is unlikely that the landlord could easily sell its interest in the property while a protected periodic tenant continues in occupation for an indefinite period. Taking legal advice It is best to seek legal advice first before finalising terms with your landlord to ensure that the terms of the new lease are not onerous and reflect the terms of your existing oral tenancy. Where there is a dispute with the landlord taking steps to terminate the tenancy without offering acceptable new lease terms, it is important to seek legal advice to your rights and how to protect your position. Roberts was the fifth top scorer in the league, while Siagris was selected to represent GB Men’s University hockey team in the Universiade in Russia, where he scored a goal in a win over the Swedes. It was an experience he will never forget. “It was a great event”, explained the 21-year- old student, “The welcoming and opening ceremonies were wonderful as were the athletes’ village, ice rink and the competition excellent…” Streatham has also announced a change in coach for next year as incumbent Jeremy Cornish has decided to step down for personal reasons and will be replaced by current captain Adam Carr. "Adam has a wealth of hockey knowledge and has been working closely with Jeremy over the past two seasons", explained General Manager Graham D'Anger, "I feel he will make a great coach and will endeavour to give him the same support I've given Jeremy. With his experience on and off the ice, Adam knows what it takes to win, and we are looking forward to challenging for, or indeed adding to some long awaited silverware next season." Streatham will begin their season again in September so keep an eye out over the summer for details of fixtures and ticketing.
