The dust has settled on the 2018 Streatham
Food Festival, brought to you by InStreatham,
which saw more than 40 of SW2 and SW16’s
fabulous food businesses offer taste bud tickling
treats to thousands of residents and visitors to
the area.
The ever-popular food tourist challenge saw
hundreds of people pound the pavements,
scoring the restaurants they visited out of
ten and collecting stamps as they went. The
deserved winner of the 2018 Food Tour was
food festival favourite, Fish Tale, whose outdoor
tables were bustling with eager customers
enjoying a fresh oyster and a glass of wine,
smoked fish pate or an antipasti skewer for just
£5 each.
Mina Tighani of Fish Tale commented, “Every
year we look forward to welcoming customers,
old and new, to Fish Tale for the food festival.
It’s an exciting and busy time for us and we love
creating a sense of community through our food.
It’s such an honour to have been voted as the
winners by our neighbourhood.”
Runners up were Streatham Wine House and
Talay Thai, both packed with diners throughout
the event. It was great to see many new
businesses getting involved in the food tour too,
including Bunk Burgers, Italian Bistro, Waffle
Genie, Batch & Co, Blackbird Bakery, Aali Baba
Kitchen, La Fresca, Burger Bros, The Rabbit

Hole, Brickwood, and Café & Creamery.
Claire Griffin, Head of Operations at the
Roundhouse, Camden, won the Food Tourist
Challenge. Claire and partner, James, have just
moved, but have ensured they can easily get
back to Streatham for their favourite restaurants
and bars. Claire said, “We enjoyed our prize
meal at Hood. We had a fab night as always,
it was a lovely treat and a great end to our
Streatham days (it will always be in our hearts!)”
The Toddler Tour saw 20 eateries taking the
opportunity to showcase their family-friendly
food - and a series of special events from
food themed film screenings, to beer and food
matching and a successful fundraising event for
Streatham Drop In Centre.
So, remember the amazing food and drink on
offer right here in Streatham. As the nights draw
in, make the most of Streatham’s gastronomic
delights on our doorstep – you could even start
planning your route for next year’s food tour!

Effective lobbying by Safer A23,
Streatham Action Transport and

Both plans include a 20mph

“Look!” I said to my wife. “There are two more.”
“Two more what?” She said.
“Rubberneckers.” I said.
“They’re not rubberneckers, they’re probably
admiring the fuchsias.”
“They’re not looking anywhere near the
fuchsias.”
“Well, the window boxes then.”
“Hardly. The window boxes are empty. Look!
They’re taking photographs.”
It was only when we read the “The Streatham
Tragedy” history article by Mark Bery about the
murder of a Streatham family with poisoned
champagne in last month’s magazine that
the rubber-neckers made sense. There was
a picture of our house next to the piece! The
friendly charm of our lovingly-restored Victorian
home, which we named “The Knowle,” took
on the unsettling aspect of something less
comforting.
“I told you I wasn’t
imagining things.” I
said.
“What are we going to
do?” said my wife re
reading the article over breakfast.
“We could ask Father Peter to do an exorcism.”
I said. Then the door-bell rang. On the doorstep
stood a tall, respectable-looking man. “I’m Mark
Bery” he said, “I’ve been trying to contact you.”
“Come in.” I said. “Can I offer you a glass of
something?”
Mark Crick
Apologies to Mark and Fiona Crick, owners of
“The Knowle,” previously named “The Bluff”,
and then ““Keele Lodge,” for publishing the
photograph of their house with the article last
month. The murders took place in the house
next door (then called “The Knowle”), which has
since been demolished
Streatham Society history expert, John Brown,
told us that Leigham Court Road has seen
at least four number changes and one name
change in its history, which makes identification
of individual houses difficult. He kindly supplied
a picture of the right house from the Streatham
News of 4th
November 1921, but unfortunately
its quality is too poor to print.

As the new academic year kicks off, pupils
at co-educational Alleyn’s School in Dulwich,
southeast London are looking forward to a
bumper year of sporting fun and competition.
There is certainly a lot to live up to. Although
the School has a long-established record of
sporting success, the last few terms have been
particularly notable for Alleyn’s teams
and individuals.
Boys and girls rounded off the
spring and summer terms with
a sweep of titles in water polo
and cricket, amongst other
sporting disciplines.
Alleyn’s, whose sporting
mantra is Inclusion;
progression; excellence, has
a developmental philosophy
that aims to inspire all pupils
to enjoy sport and games,
regardless of their starting point.
A healthy number of Alleyn’s pupils
participate successfully at regional, national
and international level in sports including
football, athletics, water polo, fives, netball,
fencing and sailing. One pupil notably achieved
a gold medal in diving at the European
Championships over the summer.
As a progressive school, Alleyn’s
regularly fields successful
mixed-gender sporting squads.
Certainly, boys and girls have
access to extensive facilities to
help bring out their sporting
best, with the School enjoying
the use of floodlit all-weather
pitches, cricket pitches and
pavilion, tennis, basketball,
netball and hockey courts, and
a 25-metre swimming pool with
an Olympic timing system.
Alleyn’s offers means-tested financial
assistance and a range of scholarships,
including a Sports Scholarship at 11+ and 13+.

streatham IhC look to make October a month
that counts with four home games in four weeks.
the redhawks face Invicta Dynamos, London
raiders, swindon Wildcats, and Bracknell Bees
in four exciting fixtures.
“We’ve made a number of changes from a year
ago and… the players we have brought in will
be exciting to watch” said head Coach Jeremy
Cornish. “the league has once again stepped
up recruitment-wise, and we hope these new
signings will help us continue to progress and
compete near the top of the table.”
streatham signed nine new players including
star goalie Damien King from Invicta Dynamos,
former elite League forward Leigh Jamieson,
former streatham junior and elite league
defenceman rupe Quiney, plus Canadian import
Alex Roberts. The team got off to a flying start in
their opening home game against milton Keynes
thunder with roberts scoring two goals in a 3-2
win. he’s also getting used to living in streatham
after arriving from British Columbia the week
before the first game.
“I’ve had to dodge traffic a few times already”
he admitted on the perils of sW16. “I just need
to get used to the cars on the wrong side of the
road and get used to London life. the guys have
been great in the room and the owners and
Coach have been supportive so it’s a good start
here.”
