Welcome to our first magazine of 2017.
We’re looking forward to a fabulous February in
Streatham. With the Common looking gorgeous
in the chill, it's magical to walk across the frosty
grass to the newly-refurbished Rookery Cafe for
hot chocolate and see that the trees are already
in bud and spring will soon be here.
With Valentine's Day coming up, there’s no
need to leave SW16 to find beautiful gifts and
cards for your sweetheart. Even Chanel and
Dior fragrances and hand-made chocolates are
available on the High Rd, these days- see our
centre spread for some Streatham surprises!
We have exciting news about new shop
openings in this issue, and several Balham
estate agents have set their sights on
Streatham. Even the Guardian told its readers
about Streatham’s because “the reality is
amazing, with homes high on the hill that’d
be the envy of Hampstead, but without the
snobbery.” Shhhh! We don’t want the secret of
how special Streatham is to get out too far!
The stunning cover photograph and the
one on this page are by Suzie Pindar, better
known as the Naked Artist. She is preparing
for her photography solo show in October

We had some great news in over the holdiay
period. Streatham Wine House released reports
that one could lose weight by drinking red wine
and the fame of Streatham Rovers FC made it
all the way to the Scottish Sun where they were
“featured”.
There was good fun wassailing in the orchard
of the Streatham Common Community Garden
and good news that the Leigham Court Road
car park now has free parking for shoppers
on Sundays. Hat tip to the Streatham Wells
councillors who pushed for this.
We knew the hols were over when local fellow
Ben Kolb spotted Easter goods in Streatham's
grocery stores whilst Christmas trees were
being collected from pavements. Speaking of
Spring, we had a nice chat with Christina Gillett
who’s organising the Den Day for children to
build nature dens in late Spring. Organisations
wishing to get involved should get in touch.
Speaking of pavements, one of our readers
confronted the Arriva bus depot manager
about buses parked across the pedestrian
pavements on the High Road in Streatham Hill.
When asked about this he ran away without
comment.
Hideaway had a brush with celebrity as Lesley-
Ann Jones signed copies of her new biography
of David Bowie at the Wall-to-Wall Bowie show
there. Lesley-Ann has also written critically
acclaimed biographies of Freddie Mercury,
Marc Bolan and Kylie Minogue.
We received late-breaking word the South
London Liberal Synagogue will be hosting a
Syrian refugee family at their expense in a flat
they’re refurbishing for this purpose. We spoke
to Alex Lyell of Streatham Christian Church, and
Nathan McGuire of Streatham Baptist Church
and Love Streatham, as well as Aslam Ijaz of
South London Islamic Centre, all of whom said
the they were engaged on this as well. More on
this in our next issue.

It took three years for Tesco to tear down
the Streatham swimming baths, the original
ice rink and the bus garage then build the
existing leisure centre, flats, the Tesco store
and all the various bits around it. The entire
development cost around £175m.
It’s taken about the same amount of time for
Lambeth Council to decide how to spend
£750k of Section 106 monies paid by Tesco
on projects in three of Streatham’s wards. You
see, as a condition of being allowed to do
their development, Tesco paid around £2.5m
to Lambeth as a Section 106 contribution
(now known as community infrastructure levy
or CIL) to, amongst other things, compensate
for disruption to residents and help improve
nearby areas.
It didn’t take nearly that long to do way
more of that in Brixton, Oval, Herne Hill and
Stockwell, where Lambeth spent its own
budget money whilst we get only a small slice
of the cash Tesco paid to Lambeth for their
development in Streatham.
So, what does Streatham get for it? At the
time of going to press only the St Leonards
ward had any scheme details announced.
Streatham Wells and Streatham South are
still to be updated - Streatham Hill isn’t
included. An underwhelming 150 trees will
apparently be planted somewhere, with
raised beds to be built somewhere else after
consultation with the community. Lambeth
hired consultants to do this over a year ago,
I know because I spent an (unpaid) day with
them, you might be forgiven for thinking they
already knew.
You might also think with all the horticultural
expertise and talent keeping the Rookery in
fine fettle that Lambeth might think it a great
idea to make this a local initiative. In fact,
some of the cash will apparently subsidise a
company from Brixton to do the work!
It seems Lambeth’s preferred plan is to
convert the parking spaces in front of the
Greyhound pub to cycle parking and benches
to relax on. Never mind the diesel fumes,
traffic pollution and noise from two main
roads converging!
It’s bad enough taking so long to get to this
point. It’s worse being fobbed off with our
“own” money and having outside firms doing
the work, but the disappointing nature of
the design doesn’t inspire confidence that
Lambeth knows where Streatham is, much
less that it cares.

The South London Liberal Synagogue, in
Prentis Rd. has announced “The Abraham’s
Tent Project”, which aims to raise £50,000 to
renovate a disused two-bedroom caretaker’s
flat to be offered to a Syrian refugee family
being resettled in Lambeth. The biblical story of
Abraham’s tent describes how he built an open-
sided tent to welcome strangers. The Council
has promised to accommodate 20 families
by 2020, which has resettled 6 families so far,
including one at Lambeth Palace in a cottage in
the grounds.
An article in The Guardian quoted Alice
Aphandary, the synagogue chair; “There is a
sense that we as Jews have benefited from
sanctuary in the past. For example, my father
was a refugee in the 1950s. Now we want to
repay that welcome to a new generation.”
The synagogue will be launching a fundraising
campaign in February - keep an eye on www.
southlondon.org for more information.
Marks and Spencer’s announcement (via
a planning application in January) that they
plan to open another Food Hall in Streatham
at the site of the old Morrison’s to join the
one opening at London Square’s Megabowl
development is the big news on the retail front
this month. The #Streatham twitter feed was
ablaze as they confirmed to @heartstreatham
that they will open sometime in the third quarter
of this year. We can’t wait to welcome them!
Joining them at the Morrison’s site is The Gym,
with membership from £12.99 a month, the
chain is focused on fitness rather than luxury,
and offers 24 hour a day opening in other
locations. The Streatham site is due to open in
September.
Costa Coffee has also tipped to have taken
one of the Morrison’s units, though they will
face stiff competition from our independent
favourites surrounding the site, Café
Barcelona, Deli Llama, and The Filling Station
– love their beautiful fragrant spring vases of
freesia and hyacinths on the tables!
The Streatham branch of Santander is currently
closed for refurbishment (13th January -
8th February). The refurbishments will continue
after that, but out of hours to “minimalize
customer impact”. We are promised a newly
designed customer-centric branch in April
with” state of the art digital facilities, and an
innovative design to place the customer at the
centre”. Gosh!

Beacon Bingo, part of the Praesepe Group,
has announced an opportunity to work with
businesses to replace Beacon Bingo at the
Grade Two listed Streatham Hill Theatre which
opened 1928 as one of the biggest theatres
outside the West End and has been a Bingo
Club for over 50 years - in the 1960’s it was the
largest in London.
The history of this glorious building is one that
Craig White, Manager of the club, has been
keen to share with the local community. Anyone
who has had the privilege to meet Craig and
his team at Beacon Bingo will be aware of their
passion for the building and commitment to its
continuing survival as an asset for Streatham.
For example, at a special event in November
last year, guided tours of the building, a
roulette wheel and a cocktail bar reprised its
old glamour days for guests. A short play
written by Craig himself (an award-winning
amateur playwright) was performed, marking
not only the first professional performance to
take place at the theatre for 60 years, but also
demonstrating the fantastic acoustics in the
main auditorium. Those who attended felt a
shimmer of the old atmosphere of excitement
and anticipation of audiences past at the old
Streatham Hill Theatre that night!
Nick Harding, Praesepe CEO paid tribute to the
outstanding contribution of all staff at the Bingo
Club, but unfortunately, it has been running at
a loss, and Praesepe now seek commercial
partners, including anyone interested in re-
opening the beautiful cocktail bar on the first
floor. Theatre groups interested in reviving live
performances in the building are particularly
welcome. Three floors of offices are planned
at the rear of the building and Beacon Bingo is
currently consulting with staff to find ways to
minimise redundancies.
Nick commented, “I am personally determined
to breathe life back into this magnificent
building alongside all the other exciting building
and residential projects currently taking place in
Streatham and will be prepared to be as helpful
as I possibly can to any organisation that wishes
to talk to us.”

History: Streatham’s Suffragette Movement
Following the recent Women’s Marches
in London and across the world, a global
movement for rights, it seems appropriate
to recall two prominent women in Streatham
from the time of the Suffragettes.
The Women’s Social and Political Union
(WSPU) was founded by the Pankhurst family
in 1903, and by 1912 was at its height of
militancy. Following demonstrations in central
London in early March a Streatham resident,
Leonora Tyson, was arrested and sentenced
to two months of hard labour in Holloway Jail,
where she went on hunger strike. Leonora
lived with her mother and siblings at 37
Drewstead Road, Streatham. She was a very
active member of the WSPU, and Secretary
of the Streatham, and eventually the Lambeth
branch. She played an active role throughout
the Borough attending meetings, speaking at
Streatham Library and working with the HQ of
the Streatham WSPU at 5 Shrubbery Road.
After her release from prison and a speaking
tour in Germany she was involved in
organising a Suffragette demonstration on
Streatham Common in July 1912 attended
by almost 5,000. Various meetings continued
at Streatham Town Hall throughout 1913
including speeches from Mrs Pankhurst.
Disruptive events continued in Streatham
LeoNora tYsoN
www.heartstreatham.co.uk 15
right up until the outbreak of war in August
1914, and Leonara remained active for the
cause. Attitudes changed dramatically after
the war and all women over 21 eventually
won the right to vote in 1928. Leonora died
in East Sheen in 1959 aged 75.
Christina Broom (1862 –1939) was a
photographer credited as the first female
press photographer in the UK. Around 1901
she and her husband opened a stationers’
shop at 87 Streatham Hill in what was
regarded then as middle-class suburban
south-west London. At first, they sold
postcards (a fast- growing business at
that time) by acquiring copyright to other
photographers’ pictures. But in 1903 she
became the family breadwinner by teaching
herself to be a commercial photographer and
would take images of street scenes and sell
them as postcards. The couple eventually
moved to Chelsea and photographed
the Royal Family, was appointed official
photographer to the Household Division, had
a darkroom at Chelsea Barracks and a stall
the Royal Mews at Buckingham Palace from
1904-1930.
Christina took many photographs of local
scenes as well as events such as the Boat
Race and top racehorses and their jockeys.
In the ‘20s and ‘30s her photographs were
often featured in the Illustrated London
News, Country Life and The Tatler. She
also took some of the best photographs of
Suffragettes' campaigns in the lead up to
the First World War, very ably assisted by her
daughter Winifred.
Christina Broom’s photographs are a vivid
visual record of London and the Suffragette
movement. Many prints are at the Museum of
London.

Stretching from Deptford to Croydon,
the Great North Wood was a vast tract of
woodland and wooded commons that was
implemental in the development of London.
It provided a source of charcoal for bakers
and blacksmiths, tannin-rich oak bark for the
tanning industry and timber for construction
and ship-building. As the industrial revolution
rendered these products obsolete the
economic value of woodland waned, leading
to destruction and urbanisation.
Streatham Common, once used by landless
locals for grazing cattle, sat on the eastern
boundary of the great wood. The site is now
a designated Local Nature Reserve and
the secondary woodland, which covers the
eastern part of the common, is an important
part of the matrix of woodland sites which
forms the contemporary Great North Wood
Living Landscape. These woodlands continue
to support a rich ecosystem with rare dead-
wood dwelling insects and a multitude of
fungi, birds and small mammals, as well over
200 species of trees and plants.
Unfortunately a lack of management in some
of these woodlands has led to critical threats
to wildlife and to the continued existence
of the woodlands themselves. Amongst
these threats are erosion and trampling,
encroachment by invasive plant species, fly-
tipping and vandalism.
London Wildlife Trust’s new Heritage Lottery
funded project: The Great North Wood will
seek to address these threats by enlisting
local people in efforts to manage woodland for
wildlife. Working alongside the five borough
councils which the project area encompasses
as well as the Forestry Commission, the
Greater London Authority and numerous
Friends groups and community groups the
project aims to make significant improvements
to south London’s woodland environment.
An extensive programme of community
engagement events will allow a diverse
audience to learn about and experience the
woodland and remind people about the largely
forgotten landscape of the Great North Wood.
Streatham Common Woodland is one of our
13 project sites. Throughout the four year span
of the project we’ll be running public events
on the common as well as working alongside
Streatham Common Cooperative and Friends
of Streatham Common to help better manage
the woods for biodiversity.
To find out more about the project and
how to get involved contact Sam (Project
Development Officer) - sbtoon@wildlondon.

Hundreds of local businesses are set to see
dramatic changes to the amount they pay in
business rates from April after the government
published the new ‘rateable values’ of their
properties in September 2016.
All businesses in the UK pay a tax on their
premises based on the value of the property
they occupy. Every five years the underlying
value of properties is assessed to determine
its "rateable value", which broadly represents
the yearly rent for which the property could be
let.
Rates were last revalued in 2010 (the 2015
revaluation was cancelled due to economic
uncertainty) but the underlying property values
used are always from two years previously,
so the rates set 2010 were based on property
values in 2008 before the recession.
So, are the changes fair?
On 30 September 2016, the Valuation Office
Agency (VOA) published the new rateable
values of every non-domestic property in
England. Streatham businesses can check
their new values using the VOA website: www.
gov.uk/correct-your-business-rates
Initial discussions with local businesses
indicate that at worst, revaluation could mean
closures, redundancies and other negative
impacts will affect Streatham. The InStreatham
Business Improvement District is keen to hear
from businesses who may be affected by a
rise in their rateable values, and is working
alongside other business groups in London to
campaign on its member’s behalf for a fairer
deal.
Rates represent the third biggest outgoing for
many small businesses after rent and staffing
costs, but what do the costs cover? Payment
is collected by the local authority then sent
to central Government to be distributed back
to Boroughs to cover ‘statutory services’ but
it can be difficult to see any tangible returns.
With residential Council Tax, waste collection
services are included, and many businesses
owners feel they should receive services such
as commercial waste removal, licenses for
outdoor
tables and
chairs and
special
treatment
licenses in return for the high rates they pay.
To help businesses adapt, a transitional relief
scheme will be applied, capped at a 5%
increase for small businesses, 12.5% increase
for medium businesses and a 42% increase
for large businesses. Conversely. for those
benefiting from the revaluation a stepped
scheme will be in place reducing their rates
payments over the next five years so the
benefits won’t be felt immediately either way.
Whilst there is still a lot of uncertainty around
the Government’s policy commitment to give
local authorities the power to retain business
rates by 2019 in London - not least in terms
of how this plays out with GLA’s financial
“take” through this arrangement – now is the
time for BIDs to start working through the
financial, operational and political issues and
opportunities.
The amount of business rates raised in
Lambeth’s BID areas is very significant,
and this is set to grow because of the 2017
Revaluation, and as Lambeth develops -
hence there is a focus on “Inclusive Growth” in
the Future Lambeth Plan.
How can you find out more?
A business rates briefing event will take place
early next month led by Streatham BID with
representatives from Lambeth Council, the
Valuations Office and independent Business
Rates advisors focusing on: how Business
Rates are calculated and what they cover,
how to appeal your increase if you think it’s
incorrect, what transitional and small business
reliefs are available and what will happen in
2020.
Please see www.instreatham.com or @
instreatham for more information.

LEE ALLEy
After attending a Data Journalism course at the
London College of Communications, I’m using
these shiny new skills for a different approach
to our Police Update to report crime and the
results of our local police team.
The police results figures are current up to the
end of November, and I have been able only
to isolate the figures for Lambeth so far, but
see this article on our website for a map of all
offences committed in Lambeth in September,
October and November 2016. One thing I
can say is that our police officers cannot be
accused of being lazy. Having logged 11,485
offences over the period, we bring you the
following top line results from their efforts.
5724 cases were investigated but resulted in no
suspect being identified.
1005 suspects were charged and are awaiting
trial
133 were tried and found not guilty.
7 suspects were sent to Crown Court, probably
on more serious charges
32 court cases were unable to proceed for
various reasons.
111 people were sent to prison
199 accepted a caution in lieu of being charged
64 were given community sentences,
56 were given suspended prison sentences
33 were given conditional discharges.
73 were fined
57 were ordered to pay penalty charge notices
4 were ordered to pay compensation
217 people were given drugs possession
warnings
78 issues were resolved locally without formal
citations or, presumably, paperwork.
All in all, we can say our people in blue are
putting in a good day’s work!

When the children of Sunnyhill Primary
School unanimously requested more art, the
staff listened and ‘Art Week’ was born. This
term the school have developed a visual arts
project working with DOLPH, a local artist-run
initiative. Since 2014 DOLPH has been staging
a programme of exhibitions and talks from its
space behind Sainsbury’s Local in Streatham
Hill. Over the years. DOLPH’s Natasha
Kahn and Paul Cole have worked with both
prominent artists, as well as emerging talents,
and the project at Sunnyhill will see them
working with their youngest artists yet.
The DOLPH project focuses on artists’ ideas
and motivations. All artists are set a brief,
which asks them to put together an exhibition
based on what makes them tick. The result
offers an insight into their creative process.
Keeping the core, emotional focus of the
DOLPH brief intact, the Sunnyhill children will
be tasked with making a new artwork that
communicates their feelings and emotions.
The project, called ‘What Makes Sunnyhill
Tick?’ will take part over the term and the
children will each produce an artwork about
something that is important or inspires them
- an object, person, activity or an ambition.
That’s the easy bit. The hard part of the brief is
that the artwork should not only communicate
what that ‘thing’ is, but also needs to tell the
audience how they feel about it.
At the end of term the school will become a
gallery, complete with maps and guides made
by the children for family and friends to visit
and view all the finished artworks.
DOLPH’s Natasha Kahn and Paul Cole will be
working with classes and doing workshops
with the children aided by Sunnyhill staff,
who have not only led the project, but
wholeheartedly embraced it. The school
gallery will be limited to parents and carers,
but DOLPH will be organising a public
exhibition of selected works at venues along
Streatham High Road later in the year.
DOLPH would like to thank both the children
and staff of Sunnyhill Primary School for their
enthusiasm and commitment to this project,
which shows there is plenty of artistic talent in
Streatham.
Next DOLPH exhibition in March features
Paul McDevitt. DOLPH, ASC Studios, 47c

The Rookery at Streatham
Common is a Grade
2 Listed Garden on
the register of Historic
England. It was from
redevelopment through
a fundraising campaign
led by local resident, Stenton
Covington, in 1912. It was presented
to the London County Council, redesigned,
and opened to the public as a lovely
municipal garden in 1913. As some of our
readers might recall, a centenary event in
2013 commemorated these efforts and 100
years of enjoyment of the garden by the
public.
As part of the centenary activities, a
successful Heritage Lottery bid allowed for
the redesign the renowned White Garden in
The Rookery, plus some ancillary works such
as to the paths.
Much has changed since then. The
Streatham Common Co-Operative has taken
over the running of the Rookery and despite
cuts to the Council budget, SCCoop has
generated income from fundraising events,
donations, sponsorship and the new Café, so
the Rookery is looking very good these days
under SCCoop management.
However, the small waterfall at the top of The
Rookery known as the Cascade, and integral
to the ‘watery’ and tranquil character of this
special garden is often silent these days
except on special occasions because it leaks
and uses too much water.
It is expensive to replace.
SCCoop is applying to
the HLF for another grant
of approximately £100k
to renew and renovate the
cascade and the Rock Garden,
to replant the area surrounding
it with plants influenced by the Arts
and Crafts movement and the exotic plants
arriving back in Britain from plant hunting
exhibitions in the Himalayas during the late
Victorian and Edwardian eras. It is hoped that
SCCoop will provide match funding to this
bid.
A stage 1 bid has received positive
comments and SCCoop hope to submit by
March 2017, and if successful have a start on
site by September 2017.
As part of the bid the project team needs to
show public support so we are hoping that
you will sign the on-line petitions at http://
streathamcommon.org/bid-repair-cascade/.
This is also to be found on the SCCoop
website
In addition, the project group putting the
bid together are also are looking for any
memories the public may have of the
Cascade. You can email them to info@

Just go to www/heartstreatham.co.uk/addevent Welcome to our first magazine of 2017. We’re looking forward to a fabulous February in Streatham. With the Common looking gorgeous in the chill, it's magical to walk across the frosty grass to the newly-refurbished Rookery Cafe for hot chocolate and see that the trees are already in bud and spring will soon be here. With Valentine's Day coming up, there’s no need to leave SW16 to find beautiful gifts and cards for your sweetheart. Even Chanel and Dior fragrances and hand-made chocolates are available on the High Rd, these days- see our centre spread for some Streatham surprises! We have exciting news about new shop openings in this issue, and several Balham estate agents have set their sights on Streatham. Even the Guardian told its readers about Streatham’s because “the reality is amazing, with homes high on the hill that’d be the envy of Hampstead, but without the snobbery.” Shhhh! We don’t want the secret of how special Streatham is to get out too far! The stunning cover photograph and the one on this page are by Suzie Pindar, better known as the Naked Artist. She is preparing for her photography solo show in October 2017! WWW.CUTTINGROOMSTREATHAM.CO.UK Heart Magazine ad FINAL.indd 1 13/05/2016 14:28 We had some great news in over the holdiay period. Streatham Wine House released reports that one could lose weight by drinking red wine and the fame of Streatham Rovers FC made it all the way to the Scottish Sun where they were “featured”. There was good fun wassailing in the orchard of the Streatham Common Community Garden and good news that the Leigham Court Road car park now has free parking for shoppers on Sundays. Hat tip to the Streatham Wells councillors who pushed for this. We knew the hols were over when local fellow Ben Kolb spotted Easter goods in Streatham's grocery stores whilst Christmas trees were being collected from pavements. Speaking of Spring, we had a nice chat with Christina Gillett who’s organising the Den Day for children to build nature dens in late Spring. Organisations wishing to get involved should get in touch. Speaking of pavements, one of our readers confronted the Arriva bus depot manager about buses parked across the pedestrian pavements on the High Road in Streatham Hill. When asked about this he ran away without comment. Hideaway had a brush with celebrity as Lesley- Ann Jones signed copies of her new biography of David Bowie at the Wall-to-Wall Bowie show there. Lesley-Ann has also written critically acclaimed biographies of Freddie Mercury, Marc Bolan and Kylie Minogue. We received late-breaking word the South London Liberal Synagogue will be hosting a Syrian refugee family at their expense in a flat they’re refurbishing for this purpose. We spoke to Alex Lyell of Streatham Christian Church, and Nathan McGuire of Streatham Baptist Church and Love Streatham, as well as Aslam Ijaz of South London Islamic Centre, all of whom said the they were engaged on this as well. More on this in our next issue. By LEE alley

The entire development cost around £175m. It’s taken about the same amount of time for Lambeth Council to decide how to spend £750k of Section 106 monies paid by Tesco on projects in three of Streatham’s wards. You see, as a condition of being allowed to do their development, Tesco paid around £2.5m to Lambeth as a Section 106 contribution (now known as community infrastructure levy or CIL) to, amongst other things, compensate for disruption to residents and help improve nearby areas. It didn’t take nearly that long to do way more of that in Brixton, Oval, Herne Hill and Stockwell, where Lambeth spent its own budget money whilst we get only a small slice of the cash Tesco paid to Lambeth for their development in Streatham. So, what does Streatham get for it? At the time of going to press only the St Leonards ward had any scheme details announced. Streatham Wells and Streatham South are still to be updated - Streatham Hill isn’t included. An underwhelming 150 trees will apparently be planted somewhere, with raised beds to be built somewhere else after consultation with the community. Lambeth hired consultants to do this over a year ago, I know because I spent an (unpaid) day with them, you might be forgiven for thinking they already knew. You might also think with all the horticultural expertise and talent keeping the Rookery in fine fettle that Lambeth might think it a great idea to make this a local initiative. In fact, some of the cash will apparently subsidise a company from Brixton to do the work! It seems Lambeth’s preferred plan is to convert the parking spaces in front of the Greyhound pub to cycle parking and benches to relax on. Never mind the diesel fumes, traffic pollution and noise from two main roads converging! It’s bad enough taking so long to get to this point. It’s worse being fobbed off with our “own” money and having outside firms doing the work, but the disappointing nature of the design doesn’t inspire confidence that Lambeth knows where Streatham is, much less that it cares.

  • 8. www.heartstreatham.co.uk8 ParishPump The South London Liberal Synagogue, in Prentis Rd. has announced “The Abraham’s Tent Project”, which aims to raise £50,000 to renovate a disused two-bedroom caretaker’s flat to be offered to a Syrian refugee family being resettled in Lambeth. The biblical story of Abraham’s tent describes how he built an open- sided tent to welcome strangers. The Council has promised to accommodate 20 families by 2020, which has resettled 6 families so far, including one at Lambeth Palace in a cottage in the grounds. An article in The Guardian quoted Alice Aphandary, the synagogue chair; “There is a sense that we as Jews have benefited from sanctuary in the past. For example, my father was a refugee in the 1950s. Now we want to repay that welcome to a new generation.” The synagogue will be launching a fundraising campaign in February - keep an eye on www. southlondon.org for more information. Marks and Spencer’s announcement (via a planning application in January) that they plan to open another Food Hall in Streatham at the site of the old Morrison’s to join the one opening at London Square’s Megabowl development is the big news on the retail front this month. The #Streatham twitter feed was ablaze as they confirmed to @heartstreatham that they will open sometime in the third quarter of this year. We can’t wait to welcome them! Joining them at the Morrison’s site is The Gym, with membership from £12.99 a month, the chain is focused on fitness rather than luxury, and offers 24 hour a day opening in other locations. The Streatham site is due to open in September. Costa Coffee has also tipped to have taken one of the Morrison’s units, though they will face stiff competition from our independent favourites surrounding the site, Café Barcelona, Deli Llama, and The Filling Station – love their beautiful fragrant spring vases of freesia and hyacinths on the tables! The Streatham branch of Santander is currently closed for refurbishment (13th January - 8th February). The refurbishments will continue after that, but out of hours to “minimalize customer impact”. We are promised a newly designed customer-centric branch in April with” state of the art digital facilities, and an innovative design to place the customer at the centre”. Gosh! • 10. www.heartstreatham.co.uk10 Beacon Bingo, part of the Praesepe Group, has announced an opportunity to work with businesses to replace Beacon Bingo at the Grade Two listed Streatham Hill Theatre which opened 1928 as one of the biggest theatres outside the West End and has been a Bingo Club for over 50 years - in the 1960’s it was the largest in London. The history of this glorious building is one that Craig White, Manager of the club, has been keen to share with the local community. Anyone who has had the privilege to meet Craig and his team at Beacon Bingo will be aware of their passion for the building and commitment to its continuing survival as an asset for Streatham. For example, at a special event in November last year, guided tours of the building, a roulette wheel and a cocktail bar reprised its old glamour days for guests. A short play written by Craig himself (an award-winning amateur playwright) was performed, marking not only the first professional performance to take place at the theatre for 60 years, but also demonstrating the fantastic acoustics in the main auditorium. Those who attended felt a shimmer of the old atmosphere of excitement and anticipation of audiences past at the old Streatham Hill Theatre that night! Nick Harding, Praesepe CEO paid tribute to the outstanding contribution of all staff at the Bingo Club, but unfortunately, it has been running at a loss, and Praesepe now seek commercial partners, including anyone interested in re- opening the beautiful cocktail bar on the first floor. Theatre groups interested in reviving live performances in the building are particularly welcome. Three floors of offices are planned at the rear of the building and Beacon Bingo is currently consulting with staff to find ways to minimise redundancies. Nick commented, “I am personally determined to breathe life back into this magnificent building alongside all the other exciting building and residential projects currently taking place in Streatham and will be prepared to be as helpful as I possibly can to any organisation that wishes to talk to us.” NEW VISION FOR STREATHAM HILL THEATRE

  • 14. www.heartstreatham.co.uk14 History: Streatham’s Suffragette Movement Following the recent Women’s Marches in London and across the world, a global movement for rights, it seems appropriate to recall two prominent women in Streatham from the time of the Suffragettes. The Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) was founded by the Pankhurst family in 1903, and by 1912 was at its height of militancy. Following demonstrations in central London in early March a Streatham resident, Leonora Tyson, was arrested and sentenced to two months of hard labour in Holloway Jail, where she went on hunger strike. Leonora lived with her mother and siblings at 37 Drewstead Road, Streatham. She was a very active member of the WSPU, and Secretary of the Streatham, and eventually the Lambeth branch. She played an active role throughout the Borough attending meetings, speaking at Streatham Library and working with the HQ of the Streatham WSPU at 5 Shrubbery Road. After her release from prison and a speaking tour in Germany she was involved in organising a Suffragette demonstration on Streatham Common in July 1912 attended by almost 5,000. Various meetings continued at Streatham Town Hall throughout 1913 including speeches from Mrs Pankhurst. Disruptive events continued in Streatham LeoNora tYsoN
  • 15. www.heartstreatham.co.uk 15 right up until the outbreak of war in August 1914, and Leonara remained active for the cause. Attitudes changed dramatically after the war and all women over 21 eventually won the right to vote in 1928. Leonora died in East Sheen in 1959 aged 75. Christina Broom (1862 –1939) was a photographer credited as the first female press photographer in the UK. Around 1901 she and her husband opened a stationers’ shop at 87 Streatham Hill in what was regarded then as middle-class suburban south-west London. At first, they sold postcards (a fast- growing business at that time) by acquiring copyright to other photographers’ pictures. But in 1903 she became the family breadwinner by teaching herself to be a commercial photographer and would take images of street scenes and sell them as postcards. The couple eventually moved to Chelsea and photographed the Royal Family, was appointed official photographer to the Household Division, had a darkroom at Chelsea Barracks and a stall the Royal Mews at Buckingham Palace from 1904-1930. Christina took many photographs of local scenes as well as events such as the Boat Race and top racehorses and their jockeys. In the ‘20s and ‘30s her photographs were often featured in the Illustrated London News, Country Life and The Tatler. She also took some of the best photographs of Suffragettes' campaigns in the lead up to the First World War, very ably assisted by her daughter Winifred. Christina Broom’s photographs are a vivid visual record of London and the Suffragette movement. Many prints are at the Museum of London. David Wright

  • 18. www.heartstreatham.co.uk18 Stretching from Deptford to Croydon, the Great North Wood was a vast tract of woodland and wooded commons that was implemental in the development of London. It provided a source of charcoal for bakers and blacksmiths, tannin-rich oak bark for the tanning industry and timber for construction and ship-building. As the industrial revolution rendered these products obsolete the economic value of woodland waned, leading to destruction and urbanisation. Streatham Common, once used by landless locals for grazing cattle, sat on the eastern boundary of the great wood. The site is now a designated Local Nature Reserve and the secondary woodland, which covers the eastern part of the common, is an important part of the matrix of woodland sites which forms the contemporary Great North Wood Living Landscape. These woodlands continue to support a rich ecosystem with rare dead- wood dwelling insects and a multitude of fungi, birds and small mammals, as well over 200 species of trees and plants. Unfortunately a lack of management in some of these woodlands has led to critical threats to wildlife and to the continued existence of the woodlands themselves. Amongst these threats are erosion and trampling, encroachment by invasive plant species, fly- tipping and vandalism. London Wildlife Trust’s new Heritage Lottery funded project: The Great North Wood will seek to address these threats by enlisting local people in efforts to manage woodland for wildlife. Working alongside the five borough councils which the project area encompasses as well as the Forestry Commission, the Greater London Authority and numerous Friends groups and community groups the project aims to make significant improvements to south London’s woodland environment. An extensive programme of community engagement events will allow a diverse audience to learn about and experience the woodland and remind people about the largely forgotten landscape of the Great North Wood. Streatham Common Woodland is one of our 13 project sites. Throughout the four year span of the project we’ll be running public events on the common as well as working alongside Streatham Common Cooperative and Friends of Streatham Common to help better manage the woods for biodiversity. To find out more about the project and how to get involved contact Sam (Project Development Officer) - sbtoon@wildlondon. org.uk/07734 599288 or visit the Great North Wood online: www.wildlondon.org.uk/great-north-wood www.facebook.com/TheGreatNorthWood Twitter @GreatNorthWood The Great North Wood By SAM BEnTLEy-Toon

  • 22. www.heartstreatham.co.uk22 Hundreds of local businesses are set to see dramatic changes to the amount they pay in business rates from April after the government published the new ‘rateable values’ of their properties in September 2016. All businesses in the UK pay a tax on their premises based on the value of the property they occupy. Every five years the underlying value of properties is assessed to determine its "rateable value", which broadly represents the yearly rent for which the property could be let. Rates were last revalued in 2010 (the 2015 revaluation was cancelled due to economic uncertainty) but the underlying property values used are always from two years previously, so the rates set 2010 were based on property values in 2008 before the recession. So, are the changes fair? On 30 September 2016, the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) published the new rateable values of every non-domestic property in England. Streatham businesses can check their new values using the VOA website: www. gov.uk/correct-your-business-rates Initial discussions with local businesses indicate that at worst, revaluation could mean closures, redundancies and other negative impacts will affect Streatham. The InStreatham Business Improvement District is keen to hear from businesses who may be affected by a rise in their rateable values, and is working alongside other business groups in London to campaign on its member’s behalf for a fairer deal. Rates represent the third biggest outgoing for many small businesses after rent and staffing costs, but what do the costs cover? Payment is collected by the local authority then sent to central Government to be distributed back to Boroughs to cover ‘statutory services’ but it can be difficult to see any tangible returns. With residential Council Tax, waste collection services are included, and many businesses owners feel they should receive services such as commercial waste removal, licenses for outdoor tables and chairs and special treatment licenses in return for the high rates they pay. To help businesses adapt, a transitional relief scheme will be applied, capped at a 5% increase for small businesses, 12.5% increase for medium businesses and a 42% increase for large businesses. Conversely. for those benefiting from the revaluation a stepped scheme will be in place reducing their rates payments over the next five years so the benefits won’t be felt immediately either way. Whilst there is still a lot of uncertainty around the Government’s policy commitment to give local authorities the power to retain business rates by 2019 in London - not least in terms of how this plays out with GLA’s financial “take” through this arrangement – now is the time for BIDs to start working through the financial, operational and political issues and opportunities. The amount of business rates raised in Lambeth’s BID areas is very significant, and this is set to grow because of the 2017 Revaluation, and as Lambeth develops - hence there is a focus on “Inclusive Growth” in the Future Lambeth Plan. How can you find out more? A business rates briefing event will take place early next month led by Streatham BID with representatives from Lambeth Council, the Valuations Office and independent Business Rates advisors focusing on: how Business Rates are calculated and what they cover, how to appeal your increase if you think it’s incorrect, what transitional and small business reliefs are available and what will happen in 2020. Please see www.instreatham.com or @ instreatham for more information. • 30. www.heartstreatham.co.uk30 StreathamPoliceUpdate LEE ALLEy After attending a Data Journalism course at the London College of Communications, I’m using these shiny new skills for a different approach to our Police Update to report crime and the results of our local police team. The police results figures are current up to the end of November, and I have been able only to isolate the figures for Lambeth so far, but see this article on our website for a map of all offences committed in Lambeth in September, October and November 2016. One thing I can say is that our police officers cannot be accused of being lazy. Having logged 11,485 offences over the period, we bring you the following top line results from their efforts. 5724 cases were investigated but resulted in no suspect being identified. 1005 suspects were charged and are awaiting trial 133 were tried and found not guilty. 7 suspects were sent to Crown Court, probably on more serious charges 32 court cases were unable to proceed for various reasons. 111 people were sent to prison 199 accepted a caution in lieu of being charged 64 were given community sentences, 56 were given suspended prison sentences 33 were given conditional discharges. 73 were fined 57 were ordered to pay penalty charge notices 4 were ordered to pay compensation 217 people were given drugs possession warnings 78 issues were resolved locally without formal citations or, presumably, paperwork. All in all, we can say our people in blue are putting in a good day’s work! • 32. www.heartstreatham.co.uk32 When the children of Sunnyhill Primary School unanimously requested more art, the staff listened and ‘Art Week’ was born. This term the school have developed a visual arts project working with DOLPH, a local artist-run initiative. Since 2014 DOLPH has been staging a programme of exhibitions and talks from its space behind Sainsbury’s Local in Streatham Hill. Over the years. DOLPH’s Natasha Kahn and Paul Cole have worked with both prominent artists, as well as emerging talents, and the project at Sunnyhill will see them working with their youngest artists yet. The DOLPH project focuses on artists’ ideas and motivations. All artists are set a brief, which asks them to put together an exhibition based on what makes them tick. The result offers an insight into their creative process. Keeping the core, emotional focus of the DOLPH brief intact, the Sunnyhill children will be tasked with making a new artwork that communicates their feelings and emotions. The project, called ‘What Makes Sunnyhill Tick?’ will take part over the term and the children will each produce an artwork about something that is important or inspires them - an object, person, activity or an ambition. That’s the easy bit. The hard part of the brief is that the artwork should not only communicate what that ‘thing’ is, but also needs to tell the audience how they feel about it. At the end of term the school will become a gallery, complete with maps and guides made by the children for family and friends to visit and view all the finished artworks. DOLPH’s Natasha Kahn and Paul Cole will be working with classes and doing workshops with the children aided by Sunnyhill staff, who have not only led the project, but wholeheartedly embraced it. The school gallery will be limited to parents and carers, but DOLPH will be organising a public exhibition of selected works at venues along Streatham High Road later in the year. DOLPH would like to thank both the children and staff of Sunnyhill Primary School for their enthusiasm and commitment to this project, which shows there is plenty of artistic talent in Streatham. Next DOLPH exhibition in March features Paul McDevitt. DOLPH, ASC Studios, 47c Streatham Hill, London SW2 4TS www.dolphprojects.com DOLPH ‘What makes Sunnyhill Tick?’ By Tash Kahn

  • 34. www.heartstreatham.co.uk34 The Rookery at Streatham Common is a Grade 2 Listed Garden on the register of Historic England. It was from redevelopment through a fundraising campaign led by local resident, Stenton Covington, in 1912. It was presented to the London County Council, redesigned, and opened to the public as a lovely municipal garden in 1913. As some of our readers might recall, a centenary event in 2013 commemorated these efforts and 100 years of enjoyment of the garden by the public. As part of the centenary activities, a successful Heritage Lottery bid allowed for the redesign the renowned White Garden in The Rookery, plus some ancillary works such as to the paths. Much has changed since then. The Streatham Common Co-Operative has taken over the running of the Rookery and despite cuts to the Council budget, SCCoop has generated income from fundraising events, donations, sponsorship and the new Café, so the Rookery is looking very good these days under SCCoop management. However, the small waterfall at the top of The Rookery known as the Cascade, and integral to the ‘watery’ and tranquil character of this special garden is often silent these days except on special occasions because it leaks and uses too much water. It is expensive to replace. SCCoop is applying to the HLF for another grant of approximately £100k to renew and renovate the cascade and the Rock Garden, to replant the area surrounding it with plants influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement and the exotic plants arriving back in Britain from plant hunting exhibitions in the Himalayas during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. It is hoped that SCCoop will provide match funding to this bid. A stage 1 bid has received positive comments and SCCoop hope to submit by March 2017, and if successful have a start on site by September 2017. As part of the bid the project team needs to show public support so we are hoping that you will sign the on-line petitions at http:// streathamcommon.org/bid-repair-cascade/. This is also to be found on the SCCoop website In addition, the project group putting the bid together are also are looking for any memories the public may have of the Cascade. You can email them to info@ heartstreatham.co.uk and we will send them onBarbara Wright SCCOOP and The Friends of Streatham Common The Rookery HLF Bid
