A gerund is not the same thing as a present participle even
though both terms end in”-ing”.
A gerund always acts as a noun.
A present participle is always part of a verb phrase.

As subject: because a gerund is a noun, it can be the subject
of a sentence.
Brushing your teeth is important.

We use -ing form after these verbs like, love, enjoy, prefer,
continue, stop….etc.
I hate working all day.

7. After certain expressions
The gerund Is necessary after the expressions, can’t help , can’t
stand, to be worth, be good at…etc.
I can’t stand being stuck in traffic jams.
I am good at speaking English.
8. After prepositions
The gerund must be used when a verb comes after a preposition
like, in before, after, at…etc.
Can you sneeze without opening your mouth ?
Put on your jacket before leaving the house.
9. After the verb “Go”
We use –ing form after the verb “Go” to indicate adjectives.
My brother likes to go running around the garden.
My friends and I have decided to go walking tomorrow
the weather will be nice in the morning.

In compound nouns using the gerund .It is clear the meaning is
that of a noun, not of continuous verb.
• We have a swimming pool in our back yard.
• I bought some new running shoes.

Phrasal verbs are composed of a verb + preposition or adverb
