BIG DATA IS ON

ONE OF THE MAJOR PROBLEMS
FACED IN BIG DATA IS TO
ORGANIZE ALL THE INFORMATION
BUT IN HEALTH SECTOR IN A SMALL
COUNTRY LIKE INDONESIA
The data that would help solve the
problems they're trying to solve is not
actually present on the Internet
IT’S PRESENT IN THE PAPER FORM. IT'S KIND
OF ON ITS WAY OUT NOW, BUT THEY STILL
USE IT FOR 99 PERCENT OF THEIR STUFF.
DUE TO THIS:
 They don't know how many children were born
How many children there are in Bolivia or Botswana
or Bhutan.
 They don't know how many kids died last week in
any of those countries.
 They don't know the needs of the elderly, the
mentally ill
FOR ALL OF THESE DIFFERENT CRITICALLY
IMPORTANT PROBLEMS THAT THEY WANT TO
SOLVE, THEY BASICALLY KNOW NOTHING AT ALL.
A CENSUS OF A COUNTRY LIKE
INDONESIA WOULD PROBABLY TAKE
TWO YEARS TO ACCOMPLISH.
BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO GO AND
KNOCK ON TENS AND THOUSANDS OF
DOORS AND ASK QUESTIONS.
AND AFTER
THEY’VE DONE
SO MUCH, THIS
IS WHAT THEY’LL
GET…
Once they've collected all that data, of course,
someone is going to have to type that into a
computer. Often, the person isn't really paying
attention and make a lot of mistakes. So, data
quality goes down.
JOEL SELANIKIO CAME UP WITH AN IDEA OF
USING “PALMPILOTS”, THAT COULD MAKE THE
COLLECTION OF DATA REALLY QUICK AND
THEY COULD SKIP STRAIGHT TO THE
ANALYSIS AND THEN STRAIGHT TO THE USE OF
THE DATA TO ACTUALLY SAVE LIVES.
IT ACTUALLY WORKED GREAT! BUT, HE
REALIZED THAT EVEN AFTER WORKING
FOR YEARS AT A GOOD PACE IT WILL
STILL BE A TINY DROP IN THE BUCKET
THE POINT WAS THAT
ANYTHING, ANY SYSTEM THAT
DEPENDS ON A SINGLE
HUMAN BEING OR TWO OR
THREE OR FIVE HUMAN
BEINGS -- JUST DOESN'T
SCALE.
After thinking a lot he understood that the
business model for all these
businesses requires something so simple
we can use it ourselves, with little or no
training. You just have to hear about it and
So they created a software called Magpi, which has an
online form creator. No one had to speak to him, you
just had to hear about it and go to the website.
It showed unbelievable improvements in efficiency. It
was cloud based, no training, no consultants, no Joel.
But soon he recognized that right
now, even the work that they've done
with thousands of people using
BUT SOMETHING CHANGED,
Instead of having a program in which they were
scaling at such a slow rate that they could never
reach all the people who need them, they've
made it unnecessary for people to get reached
by them. They 've created a tool that lets track
the number of babies that are born and the
number of babies that die, to do all those
different things to learn more about what's
going on, and to save lives and improve lives.
