4. MAN BEHIND THE INNOVATION – K. AHMED KHAN
K. Ahmed Khan is an Indian scientist and
businessman who made success in using
plastic for road construction. He is the
founder of KK Plastic Waste
Management Pvt.Ltd. He along with his
brother Rasool Khan, stung by protests
to ban plastic, hit upon the idea of
recycling plastic and mixing it with
bitumen to lay roads. Thanks to their
enterprising spirit, they have so far laid
almost 1,000 km of roads.
K K Plastic Waste Management Private
Limited buys and collects about 5 five
tons of plastic waste every day
5. BASIC PROCESSES
USED IN LAYING
PLASTIC ROADS –
1. SEGREGATION
-plastic waste collected from
various sources must be
separated from other waste.
-Maximum thickness of 60
microns.
2. SHREDDING
-will be shredded or cut into small
piece.
-the different types of plastic wastes
are mixed together
6. 3. BLENDING
At the mixing chamber, the
shredded plastics waste is to be
added. It gets blended with the
pre heated bitumen to form a
mixture.
4. LAYING OF ROADS
The plastics waste coated
aggregate is mixed with got
bitumen and the resulted mix
is used for road construction.
The road laying temperature is
between 110°c to 120°c. The
roller used is 8-ton capacity.
7. ADVANTAGES-
ENVIRONMENTAL ADVANTAGE –
The use of plastic and related materials is increasing exponentially due
to tremendous growth in population, urbanization and changed life
style leads to widespread littering of plastic on the landscape. Disposal
of waste plastic is a serious problem globally due to their non-biodegradability
and hazardous to human health, since these are not
disposed scientifically and thus, create ground and water pollution.
If this curse to mankind in the form
of waste plastic is used as a boon for
mankind by using it as additives in
road construction, it will proved to
be a best solution over worst road
condition
8. MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT –
MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT –
The increasing plastic waste in The plastic household disposed
and industrious garbage makes it
difficult to dispose the waste , because the solid is not degradable. Utilising the
waste in construction of roads gives a sustainable way of disposing of the
waste and thus helps in waste management.
BETTER ROADS-The
use of plastic and bitumen in roads make roads more durable and flexible
. It also makes them water resistant and protects roads from cracks during
monsoon.
ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE –
The use of plastic increases the road life thus sparing the money to be used in
frequent repairs of the damaged roads.
It also saves the amount of money which is to spent on the disposal of the
plastic wastes.
10. COMPANY BEHIND THE INNOVATION
PRO TEQ
Pro-Teq Surfacing UK Ltd have been awarded Global Business
Excellence Award for 2013 in the category Outstanding Innovation
for their product: STARPATH.
Pro-Teq Surfacing UK Ltd, light the way with their innovative re-surfacing
methodology demonstrating how STARPATH could help
City Councils around the UK recognise the potential savings in
local and national government energy bills.
STARPATH could be an alternative to street lighting and make
roads water resistant and thus spare the repair .
STARPATH is currently being trialled in Christ’s Pieces, a well-known
park in the east side of the centre of Cambridge by
Cambridge City Council.
11. ABOUT STARPATH
Engineers have developed a new water-resistant,
spray-on coating that makes
roads glow in the dark by absorbing UV
light during the day and releasing it at
night. The star path coating can adapt to
the lighting conditions in its
surroundings to glow accordingly. The
technology is being given a test run at
the Christ's Pieces park in Cambridge. It
could prove to be a cost effective
alternative to conventional street
lighting.
This spray has a plastic incorporated
polymer in it which makes the roads
water resistant too.
12. ADVANTAGES –
It is cost effective and easy to apply . The surface takes
very less time to be coated and is ready to use only after
four hours after applying the coating.
It cuts down the bills of energy by substituting the need
for street lights and thus helps in saving electrical
energy.
The coating also makes the roads water resistant and
thus prevent it from breaking and cracking and increases
its durability.
STARPATH effectively generates its own energy during
the day while radically enhancing visibility at night,
which assists pathway users.
13. A COMPARITIVE STUDY
STARPATH NO DOUBT IS A MUCH MORE MODERNISED
INNOVATION IT SAVES ELECTRIC ENERGY BY SUBSTITUTING
THE NEED OF STREET LAMPS .
IT ALSO HELPS TO MAKE THE ROADS WATER RESISTANT , AS
COMPARED TO THE PLASTIC ROADS IN INDIA IT IS MORE
USEFUL FOR A COUNTRY LIKE INDIA , WHERE DISPOSAL OF
WASTE IS SUCH A BIG PROBLEM.
IN INDIA THE PLASTIC ROADS NOT ONLY SAVE THE COST OF
MAKING REPAIRS TO THE ROADS TIME AND AGAIN BUT ALSO
PROTECT THE ROADS DURING HEAVY RAINS.
BOTH THE INNOVATIONS HAVE THERE OWN SIGNIFICANCE
AND WILL HELP MANKIND AND ENVIRONMENT IN THERE OWN
RESPECTIVE WAYS.
14. If we compare these two innovation s economically the cost of
preparing star path coating is way more expensive then plastic roads in a
country like India spending so much money on this innovation is not
possible.
Disposal of waste by using it in roads is of great significance , it is of
great environmental usage .
The waste which would otherwise have caused different kinds of
pollution is used in making roads thus is more useful in waste disposal as
compared to star path.
