The document is a portfolio evaluating a student's magazine project on the Bhangra music genre. It includes explanations for design choices like the magazine name "Brruah", the masthead font and colors, the skyline text and competition advertisement, images used on the front cover and contents page, and pull quotes. The student aimed to appeal to their target demographic of 20-40 year old British Sikhs and include both traditional and modern Bhangra artists. Overall design elements were chosen to represent Punjabi culture while engaging readers.
2. Introduction
Throughout this project I have
created a music magazine. The music
genre that I chose to base my
magazine around was Bhangra. This
was because I wanted to create my
magazine based on a genre that I had
an interest in and Bhangra was the
genre that stood out to me as I listen
to it all the time.
3.
4. What are Conventions?
Conventions are the rules that are
generally understood and accepted
when producing a media text in a
particular genre.
5. Conventions of a
Magazine
All different types of media have various conventions
depending on what type of media they are. Therefore
magazines and television programmes will have different
conventions as they themselves are different.
The conventions of a magazine include:
Masthead
Skyline
Anchorage
Flash
Images
Pull Quotes
Barcode
10. Why this name?
As my magazine is of a Bhangra genre I have decided to name my
magazine with a onomatopoeia associated with Bhangra dance. I
want my magazine to have a vibrant feel to it, therefore I have
named my magazine Brruah, which is a word that many Asians
say when they are enjoying a dance and a drink. It also shows
their expressions, feelings and emotions, telling us that they are
happy and proud of what they are doing. This is linked with the
idea of my magazine, due to the fact that I want my readers to
feel happy and proud of me when they read the various articles
inside. Culturally in many Asian songs the topic is around
drinking and violence, therefore I have chosen this name to tell
my audience that my magazine is cultural and not religious as
drinking and violence are not part of Asian religions. Another
reason why I have chosen to use this name is because it tells my
demographic that this magazine is about having a
laugh, enjoying life and all the other feelings you get when you
say Brruah.
11. Why this font?
My masthead font is „Samarkan‟
I chose this font as it has a Punjabi feel to it which linked to my
magazine genre, Bhangra.
This is because Bhangra music is associated with Punjabi culture
as it originated from Punjab, India.
This links in with my demographic who are male and female Sikhs
between the ages 20 and 40. I chose this demographic due to my
survey results. As my demographic are Sikhs, my chosen font fits
in with their culture as it is similar to the Sikh transcript,
„Gurumukhi‟
Therefore, when my demographic see my magazine on shop
shelves they can spot it just by looking at the masthead and also
realise what the magazine is about as my font represents my
content, which is Bhangra music, news, interviews etc. as it has
an Asian feel to it due to it being similar to the majority of Asian
scripts.
12. Why those colours?
The colours I chose for my masthead are orange, blue and black.
I chose these certain colours as they are associated with the
religious Sikh word „Khalsa‟ which means pure. Khalsa‟s are Sikhs
who have undergone the sacred Amrit Ceremony.
I wanted my magazine masthead to link with these colours due to
the association of pure, to tell my readers that the content in my
magazine is pure and true, that we at brruah! do not lie about the
content inside and that we are honest, like Khalsa‟s.
Despite the colours of my masthead linking with the Khalsa, my
magazine is not religious but cultural. Therefore, I chose these
colours to represent the Sikh culture and the aspect of the
religion being pure not the aspect of being religious, as the
majority of Bhangra songs are related to drinking and violence
which are not religious aspects of the Sikh religion.
15. Why this text?
My skyline reads “WIN!! A TRIP TO THE BIG APPLE!!” I chose this
skyline text as I wanted to advertise a competition within my
magazine, but I wanted it to be relevant to my demographic.
This skyline is relevant to my demographic and will draw them
into buying my magazine as my survey results show that the
majority of my demographics favourite holiday destination was
„The Big Apple‟.
Despite my survey results showing that New York, USA and India
were at joint majority vote I did not want to choose the common
trip to India just because my magazine was related to India. This
was to show my demographic that my magazine does not just
cover Asian artists that are traditional but also Asian artists who
do not sing in Punjabi but in English. To emphasise this I also
added images of two variations of Asian artists, Jay Sean and
Garry Sandhu on my front cover to show the wide spread of
content in my magazine.
16. Why this font?
My skyline font is „ ‟
I chose this font as it is not specific to Bhangra music which is like
the skyline itself as the competition is also unrelated to Bhangra
music.
Another reason why I chose this font was because in contrast to
my masthead font, it is easy to read and will let my demographic
know that not all of the content in my magazine is in Punjabi and
that there is text in English within my magazine for my
demographic who are not Sikh or do not speak the Punjabi
language.
By having a literate font for all of my demographic it lets my
demographic know that my magazine will be of an interest to
them. This is because like my skyline being interesting to them as
it is to do with their favourite holiday destination, New York, it
will tell them that the rest of the content will be of an interest to
them too.
17. Why those colours?
The colour I chose for my skyline is black. This is because I
wanted to make it easy to read and spot from a far in contrast to
my green grass background.
As it is darker than my background, my demographic will easily
see it and buy my magazine due to the skyline being of an interest
to them and make them want to know more about it.
My skyline will also make my demographic want to look at the
rest of the content in my magazine and want to buy my magazine
for multiple reasons, such as the interview with their favourite
singer.
20. Why this text?
My anchorage says “Back with a Bang!!”.
I chose this text as it links in with the background image it is
anchoring, because the artist „Banger‟, is coming back into the
music industry.
The onomatopoeia „Bang‟ has two meanings, the meaning that
the majority of readers will pick up is that the artist is coming
back into the music industry with a big hit.
However, the second meaning that only who know of Banger will
understand is that the word „Bang‟ is onomatopoeia but also part
of his name. This draws in Bangers fan base into my magazine
and encourages them to buy the issue of brruah!
21. Why this font?
My anchorage font is „Lucida Fax‟
I chose this font as it looks traditional but also modern at the
same time, which represents the artist my anchorage is
anchoring.
This represents Banger because he is a modern singer but has his
traditional twist within his songs as he has traditional morals.
Also as this reason is not easy to see it gets my readers intrigued
with my magazine anchorage and want to find out why I chose
this font causing them to buy the magazine.
22. Why those colours?
The colour I chose for my anchorage is orange. This is because I
wanted my demographic including Banger fans to feel closer to
Banger himself, and I found out in my interview that his favourite
colour is orange.
The members of my demographic who are unaware of Bangers
favourite colour would want to know why I chose orange and buy
the magazine to find out.
25. Why this flash?
My flash is of Indian fashion, looking specifically at Suits.
I used alliteration “Sparkly Suits!” to get my readers to look at it
and then want to look at the content of the magazine due to the
words being in their heads due to it being clear and catchy.
I chose to include female fashion as my survey results show that
the majority of my demographic are Sikh females, and that they
will be interested in Indian suits especially as it is Indian
wedding season coming up.
26. Why these images?
I included two images of my teacher Mrs Panesar and her sister-in-law in suits as
my flash is based on Indian suits that have beautiful designs. I decided to use
these specific original images as the design on both of them show modern Indian
fashion, which represents my magazine content as it is modern, mainly
Indian/Asian music and also contains fashion.
By including this on the front cover it tells my demographic what to expect in my
magazine. That they are going to get Asian content with a modern twist that looks
nice and appealing despite the concept being old, as Indian suits have been
around for decades just like Bhangra music.
The images also give my female demographic an insight of what kind of suits are
going to be in my magazine so that they can see whether they are interested or
not.
Due to my images being original it tells my readers that the content about the
Indian suits are also going to be original and not something that has been found as
a secondary source like some magazines.
I chose to use two long shot images of two women dressed in Indian suits. I chose
to use long shots as it allowed my readers to see all of the suit instead of a
certain aspect. This tells them that if they want to see it in detail, they should
turn to page 7 to find out.
27. Why those colours?
The colour I chose for my flash background is orange with a blue
border. This is because I wanted my demographic to spot it
straight away as it is bright.
I wanted my flash to represent my magazine as bright, interesting
and appealing to my demographic. This is done by the use of
colours as it gets my readers attention as it stands out which tells
them that the content in my magazine is also going to stand out
from the rest of the Bhangra magazines.
30. Why these images? Background Image
The image of Bhangra artist, Banger was taken when I met him in a field India. I
decided to take a long shot of him posed in a slightly canted position with a Mise en
scene of a field in India. I chose this specific pose and shot to show my readers that
they are going to get an insight of all of Banger from all angles. The Mise en scene fits
in with my genre as Bhangra music and dance evolved in the fields of India.
Sell Line Images
I chose to use a mid-shot of Jay Sean so that my readers can see his face and part of
his body. I chose the top half of his body to tell my demographic that I am going to tell
them everything about Jay Sean, starting from the top/beginning of his career
journey. I changed the colour image that I took at a concert into black and white as
many people think that Jay Sean is the same as every other singer, however he has
gone a different way into music which is what I have shown through the pull quote
with the image. As it is a close up of Jay Sean it tells my audience that they are going
to be up close and personal with him, which compliments the idea of the dull colours
alongside the brighter colour of the pull quote tells them they are going to go through
his journey in the magazine article about him, through his good and bad points.
My second sell line image is an extreme-long shot. I chose this shot to show my
demographic both Anil and the dhol class, so that they can have an insight on how he
teaches and how the children respond. This shot also allows me to show the
background as well, which lets the readers see what type of environment they would
be taught in if they joined the classes.
33. Why these pull quotes?
Jay Sean
The pull quote I chose for Jay Sean was “I was going to be a
Doctor”
I chose this specific quote as it will intrigue my demographic as
they will start thinking of questions on why he changed into
music and why he wanted to become a doctor. This gets them to
want to find out and encourages them to buy the magazine.
Dhol Lesson
The pull quote I chose for the Dhol Lessons was “Hamstead Hall
Students are Hectic Dhol Players”
This quote will intrigue readers, especially those who are
interested in playing the Dhol and want to know about lessons. It
also gives them an example venue of where they can get lessons.
This will intrigue them to buy the magazine to find out more
about the lessons and the requirements to participate.
34. Why this font?
My pull quotes‟ font is „Calisto MT‟
I chose this font as its different and stands out from the other
fonts that I have used on my front cover.
This informs my readers that the articles on these two artists are
also going to be different and stand out from their other articles.
This interests them to buy the magazine as they want to know
what is different about the articles.
35. Why those colours?
The colour I chose for my pull quotes is blue and black.
I chose these colours as they stood out from the background
colours they placed on and helped the reader to see them.
Despite me using these colours, I have been told by my
demographic using a social networking site to change the colour
blue to a lighter colour as it clashes with the background a little
too much.
38. Why did I include a Barcode?
I decided to include a barcode to conform with the convention
of a magazine and to give my demographic an idea about my
magazine. This will give them an idea about my magazine as
when scan it, you will get told the price of it. The price, of
£2.50 will let my demographic know that my magazine is of
higher class and is aimed at the older end of the market.
However, people may think that it is not very expensive as you
can get children‟s and teen magazines for more, roughly £3.99
for each issue, but due to the current global situation with the
recession multiple parents are not buying their children/teens
magazines due to the high price. Therefore, my magazine‟s
targeted price is reasonable when we get out of recession but
is also a sensible price for my readers at the moment during the
recession.
41. Here is a published contents page
for a Bhangra Magazine
42. What did I keep the
same?
Throughout my contents page I stuck to
some conventions of the „Sensazn‟ Magazine.
The conventions I stuck to were:
Using images on both pages
Numbering the content
Having page numbers
Text underneath some images
45. Why did I use images on
both pages?
My Contents Page is double-paged like Sensazn.
I decided to place images on both pages as Sensazn did this and
I wanted to stick to the conventions of an existing Bhangra
magazine so that my demographic who would collide with
theirs, know that it is a Bhangra magazine due to the house-
style.
Another reason why I placed images on both pages was to keep
my demographic interested in my magazine. This is because the
contents page is the heart of a magazine as it is what sells the
magazine after the front cover as it gives the readers a better
insight of what they are going to read. If there was just plain
text my readers would think that the whole magazine is just
text and may get put off from buying the magazine as they
prefer less lengthy articles.
46. Why these images?
I chose to use original images to show my demographic that the content about these
images are also original.
Foji and Jay Sean
I included an image of a new artist named Foji to show my demographic that the
content is new like him. The image of Jay Sean is bright which tells my demographic
that they are going to find out new, vibrant things about him.
The use of the medium-long shot for Foji tells my readers that by reading this
magazine they will get closer to the artists and the use of the medium-shot for Jay
Sean shows that they are going to get even closer to him due to the shot being closer
to his face and also it being the second time he has appeared in the magazine since
looking at the front cover and opening the magazine.
Editor
I included an image of me in a t-shirt and jeans with a “chunni” (Indian scarf) around
my head. I decided to wear these clothes to show my demographic that despite us
being a Bhangra magazine we include both modern and traditional styles of music.
New York
I decided to add an original image of NYC from when I went with my family to show my
demographic that someone will actually win the competition and that is not a hoax like
many people think magazine competitions are.
47.
48. Why did I use number the content?
Sensazn
Magazine
My Magazine
I decided to number the content as Sensazn did this and I
wanted to stick to the conventions of an existing Bhangra
magazine so that my demographic who would collide with
theirs, know that it is a Bhangra magazine due to the house-
style.
Another reason why I numbered the content was to show my
demographic that my magazine is structured and that the way
my content is numbered is one way in which you can read the
magazine in a logical way so that you will find out various
pieces of information in a certain order.
49.
50. Why did I use page
numbers?
My Magazine Sensazn Magazine
I decided to use page numbers as Sensazn did this and I wanted
to stick to the conventions of an existing Bhangra magazine so
that my demographic who would collide with theirs, know that
it is a Bhangra magazine due to the house-style.
Another reason why I used page numbers was to show my
readers that there is a set order to my magazine and that there
is a logical order to read it.
51.
52. Why did I put text
underneath the images?
My Magazine Sensazn Magazine
I decided to place text underneath images on the left-hand side
page as Sensazn did this and I wanted to stick to the
conventions of an existing Bhangra magazine so that my
demographic who would collide with theirs, know that it is a
Bhangra magazine due to the house-style.
Another reason why I placed text underneath the images was to
give my readers who are interested in the image a bit more
detail into what the image is about and what things you will find
out about the image in the magazine.
53. What did I change?
Throughout my contents page I stuck to
some conventions of the „Sensazn‟ Magazine.
However, I changed some of them to suit my
demographic.
The conventions I changed were:
Adding the editors address
54.
55. Why did I add an Editor’s
Address?
I decided to add an Editor‟s Address onto my contents page to
show my readers that the content of my magazine has been
picked by the editor. This was done to get a relationship started
between the reader and editor, by adding the editor‟s opinions.
Despite Sensazn magazine not including an editors address, I
wanted to include it to show my demographic that the editor of
the magazine cares about the readers.
This also tells the readers that the magazine content is personal
and specific to them as the editor is their friend.
58. Here is a published double page
spread for a Bhangra Magazine
59. What did I change?
Throughout my double page spread I stuck to
some conventions of the „Sensazn‟ Magazine.
However, I also changed some.
The conventions I stuck to were:
Including images
Including text
The conventions I changed were:
QR Code
Images on both pages
Text on both pages
60.
61. Here are the images I used on my
Double Page Spread
62. Why these images?
Banger
I decided to use these specific images of Banger due to multiple reasons. The
image of him in the corner was taken when I saw him perform during my
holiday in India, I chose this specific image because of the clothes he was
wearing. As he was wearing a traditional Indian outfit and it linked in with my
magazine genre. By linking him with my magazine it shows that he is part of
my magazine and that content like this is always in my magazines, which can
entice my demographic to buy each issue of my magazine as they want to see
more of this style of content.
The other image of him is a live shot from the interview I had with him. I
decided to add this to show my demographic that he was actually at brruah!
HQ and that the content from the interview is fresh and new like the rest of
the content in my magazine. The Mise en scene of this image is a blue saree.
I chose this specific background to keep with my Bhangra genre as sarees are
related to the Bhangra dance. Also the colour of the saree is blue to stay
consistent with my colour scheme.
Jag Kumar
I decided to include a big close up shot of Jag Kumar to show my demographic
that they will be getting up close and personal with the interview they will
watch when scanning my QR code onto their smart phones.
63. Where were the images?
I decided to place images on both sides of my double
page spread as I have noticed that people tend to look at
the images in a magazine first.
Therefore, I placed images next to the pieces of text
that I wanted my readers to notice and read.
By placing the images near a piece of text it makes the
reader look at the text after looking at the images. This
helps them understand what the text is about as the
images are related to them.
64.
65. Where was the text?
I decided to place text on both sides of my double page spread as
my demographic are older and would more likely be interested in
the content of the article rather than images of the event.
I did not want take up a whole side of the double page spread like
Sensazn did as I feel it does not fit in with my specific demographic
of 20 – 40 year olds, compared to Sensazn‟s broad demographic.
Also by adding more text it will attract my demographic as they are
able and willing to read more text rather than look at images as
they are not Top of The Pops magazine‟s (the magazine I did my case
study on) demographic who are teenagers who are more interested
in looking at the music artists rather than reading about them.
66.
67. Why did I add a QR Code?
I decided to include a QR Code onto my double page
spread as I had conducted two interviews with two
different Bhangra influences which my demographic are
interested in.
By adding this in I can aim at my demographic more
efficiently as they will be able to access my magazine
using their smartphones and kindles which they use
during their day to day lives. This will also make my
magazine‟s awareness increase as my current readers can
show their friends and family members about my
magazine without having to carry the magazine itself.
68.
69. What Social Groups does my
magazine represent?
My magazine is aimed at various social
groups, including:
20 – 40 year olds
Male and Females
Middle Class
Bhangra Lovers
70. My magazine represents 20 – 40 year olds in multiple ways.
One way that it represents them is by the ratio of text and images
throughout the magazine, as we can see that there are more
pieces of text compared to the amount of images. This represents
them as they are more interested in reading articles rather than
looking at images, which we can pick up from looking through the
magazine as it includes more lengthy pieces of text compared to
magazines for teenagers which include more images as their
demographic prefer images.
71. My magazine represents both males and females in multiple ways.
One way that it represents them is by the content within my
magazine. There is content for both males and females within my
magazine.
For the females there is content which includes fashion such as
the „Sparkly Sarees‟. This will interest them as they will want to
know about the latest fashion trend, which tells my readers that
the females who read this magazine are interested in fashion.
My magazine represents the males as it uses artists like Jay Sean
who are well built and care about their look. This tells readers
that the males who read this magazine are also healthy and fit.
72. My magazine represents the middle class in multiple ways.
One way that it represents them is by the price of my magazine.
My magazine costs £2.50 which has been chosen due to my survey
results. As the demographic has chosen the price themselves, it
tells other people who look at the magazine that they are able to
afford the magazine despite it being quite a high price compared
to other magazines that are about £1.30.
73. My magazine represents Bhangra lovers in multiple ways.
One way that it represents them is by the colour scheme.
My magazine‟s colour scheme is blue, orange, black and
which represent Bhangra lovers as the colours connote Bhangra
music.
Another way that it represents Bhangra lovers is because the
content of my magazine includes a variety of different Bhangra
articles. These articles represent Bhangra lovers as it tells readers
that my demographic are interested in all of those artists.
74.
75. The distribution methods will represent my magazine as its
content is traditional Bhangra music with an addition of modern
Bhangra music alongside it. Due to my magazine being both
modern and traditional I wanted to distribute my magazine using
both modern and traditional methods.
My magazine will be distributed in newsagents because it is the
most traditional form of distribution. This will be an option for
the older members of my demographic who want to keep to
buying magazines the way they did when they were
younger, walking to their local newsagents and buying a tangible
product.
76. The distribution methods will represent my magazine as its
content is traditional Bhangra music with an addition of modern
Bhangra music alongside it. Due to my magazine being both
modern and traditional I wanted to distribute my magazine using
both modern and traditional methods.
My magazine will be distributed using subscriptions. This method
is most likely aimed at the upper end of my demographic who are
able to buy my magazine but have very little time in their busy
lives to get to a newsagent. Therefore, having a subscription for
my magazine will be ideal for these readers as they can still keep
up to date with the Bhangra music world but also up to date with
their own.
77. The distribution methods will represent my magazine as its
content is traditional Bhangra music with an addition of modern
Bhangra music alongside it. Due to my magazine being both
modern and traditional I wanted to distribute my magazine using
both modern and traditional methods.
My magazine will also be distributed using e-readers. This method
is aimed at the younger members of my demographic who are up
to date with their technology and want to buy my magazine.
By having my magazine available on applications accessible on
smartphones like iBooks and Kindle, my demographic can easily
read the latest news in my magazine on the go.
Also, as this method is very up to date it shows readers that the
content in my magazine is also up to date to fit in with my
customers wants and needs.
78. The distribution methods will represent my magazine as its
content is traditional Bhangra music with an addition of modern
Bhangra music alongside it. Due to my magazine being both
modern and traditional I wanted to distribute my magazine using
both modern and traditional methods.
My magazine will also be distributed using online. This method is
aimed at the younger members of my demographic who love the
internet but do not necessarily have smartphones. By having my
magazine available on the internet, allowing my readers to view
my magazine with a click of a button it makes their lives much
easier as they do not have to go out of their homes to get the
stuff they need.
79.
80. Looking at my magazine now at its final stage, I can see that the
audience for it is my original demographic of 20 – 40 year old Sikhs of
both genders. People can tell that my magazine is for this audience due
to multiple things.
Sikhs
They can tell that my magazine is aimed at Sikhs due to the colour
scheme. The colours themselves are related to Sikhs due to their religion
including Khalsa which wear these colours. However, members of the
public will not know much about Khalsa if they haven‟t researched it but
they will know about the colour connotations due to the Vaisakhi events
where Sikhs dress in blue and orange.
20 – 40
Members of the public will know that my magazine is aimed at 20-40 year
olds by looking at the content. This is because my magazine includes
traditional Bhangra artists which will interest my older end of my age
range but also new, upcoming Bhangra artists who will interest the
younger end of my age range.
Also by looking at the amount of writing in my magazine you can see that
it is aimed at an older age as there is a lot of text compared to Top of
the Pops magazine which is mainly filled with posters and images, and is
for teenagers.
81.
82. I intended to attract my target audience which was 20-40 year old Sikhs
through a range of various things.
• Firstly I had a look at the Top of the Pops and Sensazn magazines and
implemented various ideas from both of them into my magazine.
• I used bold, bright colours such as blue, orange and white on a black
background which attracts my intended audience as the colours that I
used were conventional for a Bhangra magazine.
• The price of my magazine was £2.50, this is a reasonable and affordable
price for target audience.
• The bright and professional images of my models attracts my target
audience as they are the type of models the target audience will be
attracted to.
• The promotional offers that I included on the front cover „WIN A TRIP TO
THE BIG APPLE!!‟ makes my readers want to buy my magazine as the
destination is a favourite of theirs.
• Also the artists that I have included in my magazine relate and attract
both spectrums of my demographic due to the use of traditional and
modern Bhangra artists and fashion.
83.
84. Throughout this project to create a Bhangra music
magazine, I have learnt so much about various
types of technology. This is mainly because I have
experimented with using technologies that are new
to me and that I have not used before.
The technologies that I used were:
• Prezi
• Slide Rocket
• Photoshop
• Youtube
• Blogger
85. Prezi
Prezi is an online presentation software that allows you to use
quirky ways to present your work. In this project I used this
software to present my findings on music magazines. By using
this software I was able to zoom in and out of different aspects
of my spider diagram to show my different analysis‟ of each
magazine.
Using this software I learnt that you can present work in
different ways instead of just on a PowerPoint Presentation.
Whilst I created it I had a few issues which were including
images, however I didn‟t let this stop me from carrying on and
finished this piece on time despite these minor defects.

86. Slide Rocket
Slide Rocket is an online presentation software that allows you to use quirky
ways to present your work. In this project I used this software to present my
case study on Top of the Pops magazine. By using this software I was able to
use different effects to show my findings.
Using this software I learnt that you can present work in different ways
instead of just on a PowerPoint Presentation.
Whilst I created it I had a few issues which was viewing the effects as they
did not come up when I added the presentations onto my blog using blogger.

Photoshop is a software from Adobe that allows you to create
various items. In this project I used this software to create my
Front Cover, Contents Page and Double Page Spread for my
magazine. By using this software I was able to include images
and text and also change colours and font if needed to.
Using this software I learnt how to use the software itself as I
had never used it before and needed to experiment first as I
was used to Fireworks.
Despite the fact that I had never used the software before, I
still pursued to use it and eventually did create my magazine.
Along the way I had a few problems such as font not working
and images being blurred but throughout the weeks of creating
my magazine I learnt how to alter each layer and correct the
mistakes.
88. Youtube
I have previously used Youtube but not in the way
that I did in this project. I am used to using this
website to listen to music and create playlists with
them, but I had never uploaded my own videos onto
Youtube.
During this project I uploaded two videos of
interviews that I had conducted myself with a
Bhangra artist, Banger and a Bhangra dancer, Jag
Kumar.
You can watch these interviews on the links below.
Banger = http://youtu.be/oJI8ncU8hLA
Jag Kumar = http://youtu.be/3Eb9goaFAGg
89. Blogger
Before this project I had never seen or created
a blog. Therefore I was unaware of how to
present it and lay it out but most importantly
what to include.
Despite having trouble including videos and
images onto my blog I created my blog and
have successfully finished it.
You can see my final blog on the link below.

90.
91. Here is my preliminary task which was to create a Front
Cover for a school magazine.
92. To create it I used Word Publisher software. I decided to use this software as I was familiar with it
which helped me access different elements on the software. Also it allowed me to use it to my full
potential with the ready made templates that I could use for inspiration.
I used various tools to create this document.
The tools I used for different elements were:
• Word Art = Strap Line and Cover Lines.
• Text Box = Text under the cover lines.
• Insert Picture = The images on the magazine cover.
When I created my school magazine cover I used the colours blue and yellow due to them being my
school colours. I decided to stick to my school, Hamstead Hall's colours to keep up with the
consistency of all of their documents.
The information that I have included in my footer is relevant to magazines as having the date and
issue number is a convention suitable for magazines. As you can see above I have included page
references for the different articles, this is another magazine convention that should be on a
magazine.
The context I have included on the front page is relevant to my school as they have just achieved
the best GCSE results, hence my cover line being "GCSE Results". I have also added information on
how my school is included in a very diverse community, to let different cultures know that we
accept them in our school whatever their background.
The images I have used on my magazine are related to the articles either underneath it or next to
it. I included images so that readers did not get bored with too much text. Also the images are used
as a hook for readers as they will be enticed into reading this magazine as they will want to know
more about the images and why they are on this school magazine.
93. As you can see I conformed and have also deformed the conventions of magazines whilst
creating my product.
The conventions that I conformed were the idea of including a masthead and images. On
the other hand I also deformed the conventions by not including a barcode, an
anchorage, a flash and a skyline.
Masthead
My masthead is very basic as it is my school‟s name and is also the same colour as the
majority of items on the page. This makes my magazine lack in multiple ways especially by
making it difficult for readers to know what the magazine is called.
Images
I have included images however I have not included a background image. The images I
used, despite a third of them being original, do not entice my readers to read the
magazine as the images themselves are very boring and random.
Barcode
I did not include a barcode as this magazine is not going to be sold in shops. However, I
included a price as it will be sold at school.
Skyline and Flash
I didn‟t include a skyline or flash as I did not conduct any research so did not know what
my demographic would be interested in.
Pull Quotes
I was unable to include pull quotes as I did not have an interview in my magazine to get
quotes from. However, I included page numbers for where readers could find things
themselves.
94. I created this magazine using Microsoft Publisher. I decided to use this
software as I was comfortable with it and had not used any other media
creating software before. Therefore, when I created my Bhangra music
magazine I developed multiple skills as I used Photoshop which was new to
me.
A skill that I learnt was inserting images into Photoshop. This was because
you do not insert images by clicking „insert‟, „image‟ and then select the
image like in other software, but you actually drag the image into the
Photoshop file.
Another skill that I learnt was changing the size of the images as you cannot
just click and drag the image. In Photoshop you have to click „Ctrl + t‟ to
turn the corners into dragging tools. Once you have re-sized the image you
have to then click place to make sure it is not blurry.
Whilst creating my magazine, I also learnt how to create QR codes and
import them into Photoshop as images.
Another skill that I learnt along the way of creating my magazine was to
empty scratch disks as I kept getting errors saying “scratch disks are full”. I
conquered this by getting rid of temp files and changing the preference
settings in Photoshop.
