Hannah Haas, a public relations intern for Girls on the Run of the Triangle, pitches three story ideas to Janice Lewin, a features writer for Carolina Parent. The first idea profiles a scholarship recipient to highlight the program's impact. The second focuses on an upcoming fundraising 5K to benefit the scholarship fund. The third centers on the SoleMates program where participants raise money involving young girls. Haas offers to help with interviews and provide information and photos for any story Lewin pursues.

Dear Ms. Lewin,
I would like to pitch three story ideas to you. I know Carolina Parent often highlights ways for
the community to get involved with local nonprofits, so I thought you may be interested in
covering Girls on the Run of the Triangle and our extensive scholarship program in the next
issue. My first idea for a story is a profile of a Girls on the Run scholarship recipient. My second
idea focuses on the upcoming Reindeer Romp 5K as a fundraising tool. My third idea is a feature
on the younger members of our SoleMates charity running program. Let me explain further.
The first idea for a story demonstrates the positive impact of donated funds through a profile of a
Girls on the Run scholarship recipient. This angle could put a human face on the beneficiaries of
these scholarships and highlight the skills and confidence girls develop through participating in
the Girls on the Run program. Parents of young girls may be interested in applying for the
scholarships and giving their daughters the chance to have a similar experience through Girls on
the Run. I can connect you with the parent of a scholarship recipient and provide you with photos
as well as background information on the scholarship fund.
The second idea for a story links the scholarship program to a Girls on the Run fundraising 5K.
All of the proceeds of the upcoming annual Reindeer Romp 5K, an event that has attracted
hundreds of Triangle community members in past years, will go to Girls on the Run and its
scholarship fund. Since the Reindeer Romp is a popular race for families, Carolina Parent readers
may be interested in seeing how the goal of the event goes beyond running and aims to benefit
other members of the community. I could provide you with access to the race and photos and
fundraising totals from past races.
The third idea for a story focuses on our SoleMates program, which allows men and women who
are already participating in a marathon or 5K to raise money in their community for the Girls on
the Run scholarship fund. Many young girls participate in the SoleMates program to raise money
to help their peers join Girls on the Run. Since the Triangle has an active athletic community,
readers may be interested to know how they can become involved with the SoleMates program. I
could connect you with one or more SoleMates for an interview and provide you with data on
SoleMates fundraising totals as well as photos of SoulMates with scholarship recipients.
2. Girls on the Run offers many opportunities for families to get involved in the Triangle
community. If you are interested in writing a story, I would be happy to help set up interviews
and provide any information or photos you may need. I will call your office on Wednesday at
noon so we can discuss this further.
Sincerely,
Hannah Haas
