VIRTUAL COMPETITION ON UPCYCLING OFWASTE TO
IMPROVE SPACES OR FACILITIES IN SCHOOLS
RCE Central Semenanjung,Malaysia (hosted by University of Malaya,UM)
Issue/ Challenge: Experiential learning has proven to be the better method for engaging students compared to classical classroom style. It is the best way to
send important messages especially related to their day to day living. As a response to the global problem on managing waste, it is important to create the
awareness from young and to convert these waste to useful products where possible. In order to enhance their enthusiasm in upcycling of waste, it is pertinent
that they are able to experience their fruit of their labour upon completion. School spaces and facilities are chosen as the students’ themselves could identify the
challenges and subsequently could experience the difference created at the end of the project.
This program aims to instill the value of creativity using waste among students and the ability to improve spaces and facilities of the participating schools. The
students will propose on the products to be made to overcome the identified problems in the school spaces and facilities by incorporating the utilization of
recycled materials. Utilization of recycled materials is promoted in this program to show the economic benefits of its usage.
RCE Educational Strategy and Response: Initiated in 2017, this program managed to gather industry, government, university and community
which showed a good example of quadruple helix cooperation. The students acquired new knowledge, skills and encouraged creative thinking through
presentation of ideas in virtual video. This program has also enhanced the quality and innovative talents through creation of new product and upgrades of
existing facilities using recycled and discarded materials.

Target 4.4: By 2030, substantially increase the number of youth and adults who have relevant skills,
including technical and vocational skills, for employment, decent jobs and entrepreneurship
Target 4.8: Build and upgrade education facilities that are child, disability and gender sensitive and
provide safe, nonviolent, inclusive and effective learning environments for all
Target 17.7: Encourage and promote effective public, public-private and civil society partnerships,
building on the experience and resourcing strategies of partnerships

Virtual International Competition on Upcycling of Waste to Improve Spaces or Facilities in Schools

VIRTUAL COMPETITION ON UPCYCLING OFWASTE TO IMPROVE SPACES OR FACILITIES IN SCHOOLS RCE Central Semenanjung,Malaysia (hosted by University of Malaya,UM) Issue/ Challenge: Experiential learning has proven to be the better method for engaging students compared to classical classroom style. It is the best way to send important messages especially related to their day to day living. As a response to the global problem on managing waste, it is important to create the awareness from young and to convert these waste to useful products where possible. In order to enhance their enthusiasm in upcycling of waste, it is pertinent that they are able to experience their fruit of their labour upon completion. School spaces and facilities are chosen as the students’ themselves could identify the challenges and subsequently could experience the difference created at the end of the project. This program aims to instill the value of creativity using waste among students and the ability to improve spaces and facilities of the participating schools. The students will propose on the products to be made to overcome the identified problems in the school spaces and facilities by incorporating the utilization of recycled materials. Utilization of recycled materials is promoted in this program to show the economic benefits of its usage. RCE Educational Strategy and Response: Initiated in 2017, this program managed to gather industry, government, university and community which showed a good example of quadruple helix cooperation. The students acquired new knowledge, skills and encouraged creative thinking through presentation of ideas in virtual video. This program has also enhanced the quality and innovative talents through creation of new product and upgrades of existing facilities using recycled and discarded materials. Projects SDGs andTargets: Target 4.4: By 2030, substantially increase the number of youth and adults who have relevant skills, including technical and vocational skills, for employment, decent jobs and entrepreneurship Target 4.8: Build and upgrade education facilities that are child, disability and gender sensitive and provide safe, nonviolent, inclusive and effective learning environments for all Target 17.7: Encourage and promote effective public, public-private and civil society partnerships, building on the experience and resourcing strategies of partnerships INTERNATIONAL
