This document outlines a project to restore the degraded Nairobi River ecosystem through an adopt-a-river initiative. The objectives are to determine the environmental conditions of the river using aquatic macroinvertebrates, identify key indicator species, and build environmental education capacity among youth. The project uses a scoring system called miniSASS to sample and identify macroinvertebrate species to assess the river's health. Key steps involve identifying study areas, obtaining sampling equipment, sampling the river, calculating sensitivity scores, and partnering with other organizations to restore priority areas and impact the river ecosystem.

9. The project is undertaken through the use of
miniSASS (South African Scoring System
version), a framework used to identify the
key species of aquatic macro invertebrates
to determine the ‘health of the river’.

(pond net, white trays, dissecting kit, sampling bottles,
hand lenses, dichotomous key).
