Bullying
By: Hana Bavana
WHAT IS BULLYING?
Bullying is when actions such
as verbal, physical or
psychological acts of behaviour
are directed by a person or a
group to a less capable person or
group while intending to cause
distress or harm.
TYPES OF BULLYING
VERBAL BULLYING
Type #1
- Verbal bullying occurs when someone uses language to gain power over
his or her peers.
- Verbal Bullying is also when unwanted teasing, name calling, taunts,
rumour spreading and making racist and homophobic remarks.
- Verbal Bullying is commonly known as the ‘unseen violence’ because of the
fact that it does not leave any physical and visible marks.
- Over 3.2 million students are victims to bullying each year and
approximately 160,000 teens skip school every day because of bullying.
- Verbal Bullying is just as bad as physical. This kind of bullying will leave
marks that may NEVER heal.
- Verbal bullies are one of the more difficult types of bullies to identify
since their attacks tend to only occur when adults are not present.
PHYSICAL BULLYING
Type #2
- Physical Bullying can take form as either Fighting, Practical jokes,
stealing and also sexual harassment.
- Middle school is the age when bullying is most common, with almost all
middle school students being affected directly or indirectly by bullying.
- Physical bullying is more likely to occur among males, though females
may also be the perpetuators or victims of physical bullying.
- Bullying can have serious consequences for the victim, leading to low self
esteem, depression, trouble at school, and sometimes even violent behaviour.
CYBER BULLYING
Type #3
- Cyber bullying occurs when social networks are used to repeatedly harm or
harass in a deliberate manner.
- With the increase in use of these technologies, cyberbullying has become
increasingly common, especially among teenagers.
- A study observed that children who enjoyed violent video games were far more
likely to both experience and perpetrate cyberbullying.
- Awareness has also risen, due in part to high-profile cases like the suicide of Tyler
Clementi and Olivia Penpraze.
Bullycide
Bullying & Suicide – The effects
- Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young
people, resulting in about 4,400 deaths per year, according to
the CDC.
- For every suicide among young people, there are at least 100
suicide attempts.
- Over 14 percent of high school students have considered suicide,
and almost 7 percent have attempted it.
- Bully victims are between 2 to 9 times more likely to consider
suicide than non-victims, according to studies by Yale
University
- A study in Britain found that at least half of suicides among
young people are related to bullying
- 10 to 14 year old girls may be at even higher risk for suicide,
according to the study above
- According to statistics reported by ABC News, nearly 30
percent of students are either bullies or victims of bullying,
and 160,000 kids stay home from school every day because of
fear of bullying
- Suicide is more common among boys. Although girls attempt
suicide more, Boys find more efficient ways and their success
rate is higher in comparison to girls.
TRIBUTE TO SUICIDE VICTIMS
Tyler Clementi and Olivia Penpraze
Tyler Clementi
He was one of the many that thought
suicide was the only way to escape all
the Bullying. was an 18-year-old
American student at Rutgers
University in Piscataway, New Jersey,
who jumped to his death from
the George Washington Bridge on
September 22, 2010. On September
19, his roommate, Dharun Ravi, and a
fellow hallmate, Molly Wei, used
a webcam on Ravi's computer and a
computer in Wei's dorm room to view,
without Clementi's knowledge,
Clementi kissing another man and the
following day, He posted the video on
twitter. Clementi's death brought
national and international attention to
the issue of cyberbullying and the
struggles facing LGBT youth.
Tyler Clementi
Olivia Penpraze
She was one of the many that thought
suicide was the only way to escape all
the Bullying. The day before she
committed suicide, She posted a video
on tumblr saying how she couldn’t
continue on with life. The following
day after her death, One of the
members of the band ‘Pierce the Veil’
saw the video and he said that the
video haunted him for many nights
afterwards. He informed the band of
the video and they made a song called
‘Bulls in the Bronx’ in tribute to Olivia
Penpraze.
OLIVIA PENPRAZE
Please, don't take this out on me,
'Cause you're the only thing that's keeping
me alive.
And I don't wanna wait for the down-set
date
'Cause I would rather end it all tonight.
And if I mean anything to you,
I'm sorry, but I've made up my mind.
(Bulls in the Bronx - Pierce the Veil)
