Background
Why OKF in Korea
1
Learn and share open data experiences
We expect to learn best practices, strategies, policies of open data, and also share more concrete examples
in Korea. Although Korean government has a great success in area of e-government, it is also big obstacle
for expanding “open data”. The vision and objectives of OKF can be a good guideline.
2
Make Korean open data more open, accessible
Various datasets already exist from government, and more datasets will be opened up in near future.
However, these datasets are not shared with other datasets from other countries or communities, because
of language, culture issues. OKF Korea aims to solve these limitations and to leverage open data in worldwide.
3
Make better successful communities of open data
Individuals and communities are now interested in using open data. However, for expanding their interests
to be live well-organized community is necessary. OKF Korea will be a hub for communicating,
collaborating, and connecting people who are willing to change their life using open data.

Future plan
Requirements
Initially, 10~15 members will be joined OKF Korea, as soon as we have a confirmation from
OKF. Let us know what are requirements for establishing a local group. We are ready!
Shor term
• Open Data Dev Camp (October)
• The Korea Data Hub (October)
• KSWC 2012 (November)
Q1
From October, can we use the title “OKF Korea” for scheduled events?
Q2
I would like to invite you for KSWC 2012. For invitation, what should I
prepare for you?
Long Term

Data on the Web
Data is information about things
Data is something machines can process
Data drives applications (e.g. web sites, mobile services)
Data is relations among things

Vision of Government Open Data
“realise significant economic benefits by enabling businesses and non-profit organisations to build
innovative applications and websites using public data.”

449. Reality Check
Data.gov in crisis
Data.gov, along with a number of other data-related sites of the government
such as USAspending.gov and Apps.gov, are slated to be shut down due to
budget cuts. The current annual budget of $37 million will be reduced to $2
million. – (Guardian April 11)
