Plastic products are of great value to society. Plastics have put in motion many positive developments and facilitate safety,
health, comfort, food and welfare. Most plastics are made from fossil fuels such as oil. Plastic products or plastic packaging are
often incinerated (with energy recovery). This is a linear economic model. In a circular economy plastics and plastic products
maintain their value by re-using, repairing and eventually recycling. The basic principle is that products and materials are
specifically designed for this purpose.
The illustration below shows the current situation of plastics in the circular economy in the Netherlands.

Currently less than 1% of the
plastics are procused from
renewable feedstock5

ENERGY
3 to 4% of all extracted oil in the world is used as
energy to produce plastics1

Sustainable energy sources could be used in order to
reduce environmental impact.

collected with the Plastic Heroes
collection system (2013)4

PLASTIC LITTER
As a result of abuse, poor logistics and misuse
there still is created a lot of plastic litter. This
partly ends up in the soil, but a lot of plastic is
also accumulated in the gyres in the ocean.
PLASTIC COLLECTION
Many sectors have their own (plastic) waste
collection organizations. There is Wecycle
for electronic devices and lamps, ARN for
vehicles, VKG for window frames and there
are several private collection systems.

Plastics have put in motion many positive developments and facilitate safety, health, comfort, food and welfare. Most plastics are made from fossil fuels such as oil. Plastic products or plastic packaging are often incinerated (with energy recovery). This is a linear economic model. In a circular economy plastics and plastic products maintain their value by re-using, repairing and eventually recycling. The basic principle is that products and materials are specifically designed for this purpose. The illustration below shows the current situation of plastics in the circular economy in the Netherlands. PLASTICS IN THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY BIOBASED Currently less than 1% of the plastics are procused from renewable feedstock5 . ENERGY 3 to 4% of all extracted oil in the world is used as energy to produce plastics1 . Sustainable energy sources could be used in order to reduce environmental impact. PRODUCTION OF PLASTICS2 12.1% 10.4% 18.9% 7.1% 27.1% PLASTIC HEROES Nearly 50% of plastic packaging waste offered for re-use is household packaging waste. This is mainly collected with the Plastic Heroes collection system (2013)4 . PLASTIC LITTER As a result of abuse, poor logistics and misuse there still is created a lot of plastic litter. This partly ends up in the soil, but a lot of plastic is also accumulated in the gyres in the ocean. PLASTIC COLLECTION Many sectors have their own (plastic) waste collection organizations. Both mechanical and chemical recycling offer opportunities to use plastics as raw material for new plastic products. 34% of the collected plastics are recycled or exported to be recycled2 . FOSSIL RAW MATERIALS The vast majority of plastic products or components are derived from fossil raw materials. Approximately 4 to 5% of all oil and gas production in the world is used as raw material for plastics and synthetic rubber1 .
