concentrate on physical health
of person but also mental and
spiritual health is included
under healthy Lifestyle.

Acharya Sushruta has described that the Doshas
must be in equilibrium , the digestive fire must
be in balanced state and the tissue (Dhatus) and
Malas (wastes) must worth in normal state .
The Sensory and Motor organs and Mind, Atoms
must be in pleasant state. Such a person is stated
as Healthy person.
In Ayurveda, perfect lifestyle is mentioned for healthy life in
Sanhitas. It includes the daily regime or routine schedule
called Dincharya which should be followed for healthy life.
Ozone( O3) -Ozone act as ANTIOXIDENT
 Improves Metabolism
Cold and calm atmosphere
 Silence of nature gives Cheerful effect on body
and mind
Chirping voice of birds
Sounds of prayer coming from Temples , masjid
and church
 It is ideal time for the gain of knowledge
Health is got from the sun. So one should get up
early in the morning before sunrise.
Evacuation of stool and
urine
Brushing of Teeth
Tongue cleaning
Gargling
Mouth wash
Collyrium (Anjana)
Nasal drops
The physical action, which enhances the strength of the
body, when performed in the required amount.
Benefits:
Increases intake of oxygen by increasing rate of
respiration
Enhances circulation of blood and lymph ultimately
enhances oxygen supply to body tissues.
Enhances appetite and bowel movements are regulated
Excretion of uric acid is enhanced.
The mind is refreshed and power of observation,
precision and talerance get enhanced.

5) Pratyahara 6) Dharana 7) Dhyana 8) Samadhi
Here the oil applied to the skin nourishes even the
Dhatus depending on the duration of massage.
Benefits:
Delays ageing, cures tiredness and Vata disorders,
improves vision, nourishment, good sleep, good
lustrous skin and strength.
Foot massage- Removes dryness and numbness
instantly, provides strength and stability to feet,
improves vision and cures diseases like sciatica,
cracking of food.
Head massage- gives strength to hair and skull and
nourishes the sense organ.
It is a massage with different powders of herbs,
having astringent taste.
It is a process which helps to decrease fat and
Kapha, makes the body strong and excellent, clear
and good complexion to the skin cures rashes.
Benefits:
By this blood vessels get dilated and Agni in skin
gets enhanced.
It enhances complexion of ladies, gives pleasure,
clearness and lightness in the body.
After doing massage, if one takes bath, person
will be cured of bad odour, heaviness of body,
drowsiness, itching, impurities, distaste, sweat
and unpleasentness due to sweat.
Cold water bath cures bleeding disorder.
Hot water bath excluding head enhances strength
and destroys Kapha and Vata.
Breakfast-8am to 9am
Lunch -12:30pm to 1:30pm
Evening breakfast- 5pm to 6pm
Dinner – 7:30pm to 8:30pm
Sleep is prime among the factors responsible for
sustenance of the body.
Timing :- 10-11pm
Benefits:
Sleep destroys half the disease.
One who gets sound sleep at night, can digest the
food well, his Appetite is increased and there is
proper nourishment of the body.
In Ayurveda Ahara (Diet), Nidra and Brahmacharya are
three main pillars of life.
Viruddha Ahara: The substances which aggravates
Doshas but do not expel them out of the body and bring
about abnormalities in Dhatu give rise to diseases.
Currently there has been increased in the consumption
of various foods, which are Virudha Ahara as per
Ayurvedic text
Regular , large scale consumption of these can lead to
many Life Style Disorders.
• Stavik aahar maintains Physical, Mental, Spiritual health;
Rajsik and Tamasik aahar altered our mental and spiritual
health.
• The satvik ahara can encourage growth of nerve cells ,
elevate our mood , improves cognition , increase attention
span, help cope with brain disorders.
• And if eat more Rajsik and Tamsik ahara then it may cause
spiritual illness like Fear, Anger, Blame, Guilt, Shame etc.
• Thus the knowledge of Aahar (Diet) is important in the
management of life style disorders

health is dependant on our Bhojan (Diet) i.e. What

• The food which is wrong in combination , which has undergone
wrong processed , consumed in incorrect dose , incorrect time
and wrong preaparation can lead to Viruddha Ahara.
• Viruddha Ahara reffered in terms of food-food interactions and
food processing interactions is a cause of many Metabolic
Disorders.
• Acharya Sushruta has explained the different incompatible
combination of the Shad Rasa.
The various types of Viruddha which are mentioned by Acharya
Sushruta
and Acharya Vaghbata can be incorporated under the 18 types of
Viraddha Ahara.

The evaluation of the effects of the effects of foods
depend upon following 8 factors
1. Prakriti (nature of the food )
2. Samskara (mode of preparation)
3. Samyoga (combination with others)
4. Rashi (quantity)
5. Desha (place in which the food is used)
6. Kala (Time)
7. Upyogasamsta (rules of taking food)
8. Upayokta (the one who takes food)
Following six factors are responsible for proper digestion
of food.
• Ushma
• Vaayu Apakashati – Divides the food into tiny particles
and propels to the next organ.
• Kleda – disintegrate the mass to form a soft mucliages
substance.
• Kaala – Allows the food to get properly digested and
absorbed.
• Sneha – makes food soft for digestion
• Samyoga – Brings about Dhaatu saamya

• GMO’s are a broad of plants, animals, bacteria that are
engineered for a wide variety of applications ranging from
agricultural production to scientific research.
• Multiple toxins from Gmo’s have been detected in
maternal and foetal blood.
• It also triggers food allergies, antibiotic resistance,
decreased nutritional value and increased antibiotic
resistance.
• The synthetic chemicals used in the packaging,
storaging and processing of foodstuffs are harmful
to human health because most of the substances
are not inert and can leach into the foods we eat.
• The lifelong exposure to food contact material
which includes toxicants, such formaldehyde at
low levels in plastic bottles used for fizzy drinks
etc can cause cancer.
• It includes products such as candy, beverages,
preserved foods etc.
• The high fat, sugars, salt, food preservatives and
food additives that are present can lead to many
life style disorders.
Fried chicken, chips, coke, biscuits etc.
Consumption of Junk Food causes
• Memory and learning problems
• Increase risk of deficit disorder , dementia and
bipolar disorders .
• Blood sugar levels to fluctuate rapidly.
• Artificial flavouring and preservatives like sodium
benzoate increases hyperacidity.
• It remains in the digestive tract for a long time
and thus impact nutrient absorption.
• Person who eat twice a week are more likely to
have Metabolic Syndrome .
• Baked goods means bread, cakes and pastries etc.
• Eating baked goods regularly can lead to
depression.
• The foods which are chemically processed and made
from refined ingredients and artificial substances.
• This is Biggest source of added sugars and HFCs in the
diet leading to insulin resistance, high TGL , increased
fat accumulation .
• These are overloaded fat and sugar and sodium
and are prone to food pathogens like salmonella
etc that can be lethal(very harmfull)
• Research has found that milk from Bovine
growth hormone (BGH) treated cow contains 10
times more IGF than normal milk
• Higher blood level of IGF have been associated
with an increased risk of heart, prostate and
other cancer in humans and earlier puberty in
children
• The most commonly used chemical for artificial
ripening is calcium carbide (Cac)
• Cac has cancer causing properties and Also effect
the neurological system by inducing prolonged
hypoxia which causes headache, dizziness, mood
disturbances etc.
Adverse effect from Bisphenol A (BPA) exposure
includes-
• Increased fat formation and risk of obesity
• Stimulation of prostate cancer cells
• Structural damage to your brain
• The three most widely used dyes Red 40, Yellow
5, Yellow 6, are known for adverse effects like
carcinogicity, birth defects, hypersensitivity
reaction etc.
Obesity:
 The increasing availability of unhealthy food and
convenience foods also come arise in both adult &
childhood obesity.
 It increases your risk of developing major health
problems including heart disease, diabetes,
hypertension, stroke etc.
.
Cardiovascular disease:
 Foods such as saturated fats (found in fatty
meat, cheese, butter and eggs) and trans fat
(deep fried food & processed snack foods)
increased risk of Cardiovascular disease
Hypertension:
 Hypertension occurs when your arteries become
congested with plaque; which accumulated overtime.
 Most arterial plaque is diet derived from saturated fat,
trans fats and dietary cholesterol .
 Being overweight or obese consuming sodium ,
potassium and excessive consumption alcohol are
significant risk factors for hypertension.
Cancer:
 Processed and junk food can increases the risk of bowel
cancer
 Eating salt preserved food could increase the risk of
stomach cancer
 Girls who eat a high fat diet during puberty may
increase risk of developing breast cancer later in life
Stroke:
 Huge amount of sodium and nitrate are used as
preservatives in processed food thus damaging
the blood vessels.
High cholesterol:
 Consuming a high level of saturated fat
developed high cholesterol.

considerations is healthy or otherwise it is harmful and
cause many life style disorders.

3)Ahara vidhivesheshaaytanas .
4)Aharaparinamkar bhavas.
5)knowledge of viruddha ahara.
• In todays modern world people have adopted many
unhealthy foods and life style which causes many life
style disorders and in future it will affect the younger
population too.
• So, to avoid this we all should follow the ayurvedic Ahara
(Diet) methodology i.e. Acharya has explained some rules
i.e, healthy diet , Ahara vidhivisheshaaytanas ,
Aharaparinamkar bhavas and knowledge of viruddha
ahara. We have to follow healthy life style also.
• Thus all will help us to manage and prevent the life style
disorders.
• Hence we conclude that our diet not only influence our
physical nutrition but also our mental and spiritual
health.
• In this modern era we need to adopt all the methodology
describe in Ayurveda to live healthy life.

Healthy Life Style and Diet – An Ayurvedic Perspective By Dr. Sangita Medi

According to WHO, Health is defined as a state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity, thus lifestyle which not only concentrate on physical health of person but also mental and spiritual health is included under healthy Lifestyle.

Such a person is stated as Healthy person.

  • 5. In Ayurveda, perfect lifestyle is mentioned for healthy life in Sanhitas. It includes the daily regime or routine schedule called Dincharya which should be followed for healthy life.

We have to follow healthy life style also. • Thus all will help us to manage and prevent the life style disorders.
