Researchers and care providers wanted to have access to all of the patients` vitals signs (temperature, blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate) but most of this data wasn?t recorded, only a few readings a day were posted to the patients Electronic Medical Record (EMR). The EMR isn`t meant to store such volume of data, let alone to perform any data mining on it. This session will describe the architecture of the solution that was implemented to collect these vital signs automatically from Bedside Medical Devices (BDMI), and store them into a temporary storage, then load them into a Hadoop cluster. The session will also cover how the team married this vital signs data in the HDFS (Hadoop File System) with the rest of the EMR data for our Principles Investigators (PI) in our research institute to search for correlations between administered medications, diagnosis, and vital signs readings. The session will describe the reasons behind the design decisions that were made, such as using a Cloud Hadoop cluster versus on-premises while maintaining HIPAA.

A huge amount of medical data is generated every da y, which presents a challenge in analysing these data. The obvious solution to this challenge is to reduce the amount of data without information loss. Dimension reduction is considered the most popular approach for reducing data size and also to reduce noise and redundancies in data. In this paper, we investigate the effect of feature selection in improving the predic tion of patient deterioration in ICUs. We consider lab tests as features. Thus, choosing a su bset of features would mean choosing the most important lab tests to perform. If the number of tests can be reduced by identifying the most important tests, then we could also identify t he redundant tests. By omitting the redundant tests, observation time could be reduced and early treatment could be provided to avoid the risk. Additionally, unnecessary monetary cost would be av oided. Our approach uses state-of-the-art feature selection for predicting ICU patient deteri oration using the medical lab results. We apply our technique on the publicly available MIMIC -II database and show the effectiveness of the feature selection. We also provide a detailed a nalysis of the best features identified by our approach.

Recently proposed health applications are able to enforce essential advancements in the healthcare sector. The design of these innovative solutions is often enabled through the cloud computing model. With regards to this technology, high concerns about information security and privacy are common in practice. These concerns with respect to sensitive medical information could be a hurdle to successful adoption and consumption of cloud-based health services, despite high expectations and interest in these services. This research attempts to understand behavioural intentions of healthcare professionals to adopt health clouds in their clinical practice. Based on different established theories on IT adoption and further related theoretical insights, we develop a research model and a corresponding instrument to test the proposed research model using the partial least squares (PLS) approach. We suppose that healthcare professionals’ adoption intentions with regards to health clouds will be formed by their outweighing two conflicting beliefs which are performance expectancy and medical information security and privacy concerns associated with the usage of health clouds. We further suppose that security and privacy concerns can be explained through perceived risks.

Over recent years, multiple disease risk prediction models have been developed. These models use various patient characteristics to estimate the probability of outcomes over a certain period of time and hold the potential to improve decision making and individualize care. Discovering hidden patterns and interactions from medical databases with growing evaluation of the disease prediction model has become crucial. It needs many trials in traditional clinical findings that could complicate disease prediction. A Comprehensive study on different strategies used to predict disease is conferred in this paper. Applying these techniques to healthcare data, has improvement of risk prediction models to find out the patients who would get benefit from disease management programs to reduce hospital readmission and healthcare cost, but the results of these endeavors have been shifted.

Clinical Simulation as an Evaluation Method in Health Informatics Sanne JENSEN a,1 a The Capital Region of Denmark, Copenhagen, Denmark Abstract. Safe work processes and information systems are vital in health care. Methods for design of health IT focusing on patient safety are one of many initiatives trying to prevent adverse events. Possible patient safety hazards need to be investigated before health IT is integrated with local clinical work practice including other technology and organizational structure. Clinical simulation is ideal for proactive evaluation of new technology for clinical work practice. Clinical simulations involve real end-users as they simulate the use of technology in realistic environments performing realistic tasks. Clinical simulation study assesses effects on clinical workflow and enables identification and evaluation of patient safety hazards before implementation at a hospital. Clinical simulation also offers an opportunity to create a space in which healthcare professionals working in different locations or sectors can meet and exchange knowledge about work practices and requirement needs. This contribution will discuss benefits and challenges of using clinical simulation, and will describe how clinical simulation fits into classical usability studies, how patient safety may benefit by use of clinical simulation, and it will describe the different steps of how to conduct clinical simulation. Introduction Implementation of health IT in relation to improvement of patient safety and optimization of work flow is a paradox [1]. Even though health IT is intended and anticipated to have a positive impact on quality and efficiency of health care [2], the application of new technology in healthcare may also increase patient safety hazards [3, 4]. Studies show that adverse events are indeed often related to the use of technology [5-7]. Design of health IT focusing on protecting patient safety is one of many initiatives trying to prevent adverse events [8, 9]. 2 Patient safety does not entirely rely on technology but is highly influenced by the interaction between users and technology in a specific context [10], and sociotechnical issues and human factors are related to many unintended consequences and patient safety hazards [7, 8, 11]. SKERG Seminar on Aug 18, 2015 titled, "Designing and Evaluating a Contextual Mobile Application to Support Situated Learning" by Dr. Abeer Ali Alnuaim, the Vice Chair of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Department at KSU. Synopsis: This research emerged from seeking to identify ways of getting Human-Computer Interaction Design students into real world environments, similar to those in which they will eventually be designing, thus maximising their ability to identify opportunities for innovation. In helping students learn how to become proficient and innovative designers and developers, it is crucial that their ‘out of the classroom’ experience of the environments in which their designs will be used, augments and extends in-class learning. The aim of this research is to investigate the process of designing a mobile learning application in a blended learning model. This app was designed to support students in a design task and to develop their independent learning and critical thinking skills, as part of their Human-Computer Interaction coursework. It explores the challenges in implementing and deploying such an app in the learning context. A number of evaluations were conducted to assess the design, usability and effectiveness of the app. Promising results show that the app has helped students in developing critical skills for designing technology. However, there were a number of concerns discovered regarding the context of use of a mobile device, including usability of interface elements and acceptability of using the app in a public place.
