AND CULTURALLY
RELEVANT
INSTRUCTIONAL
MATERIALS
UNIT 3 : LESSON 3
• Instructional materials (IMs) play a very important
role for successful teaching and learning. As such,
they must be culturally relevant; that is, they reflect
and accommodate cultural plurality in order to support
student learning in diverse classrooms. Thus, this
study was conducted to examine the cultural relevance
of the instructional materials used by elementary
teachers in the Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual
Education (MTB-MLE) Program.
• Culturally relevant instructional materials can boost
providing “mirrors and windows”: “mirrors” reflect
experiences, while “windows” allow them to connect
people, places, ideas, and events that have shaped the
.
Some example of instructional materials that may be used in teaching
Mother Tongue.
ANALYZE
● In choosing the instructional materials, you need to remember
two important criteria: the material must be on-grade (i.e
your learners can relate to the materials).
● Most important things to consider when choosing instructional
materials are the sections describe the four primary
categories of criteria that teachers said they use when
selecting instructional materials: accuracy and visual
appeal, alignment to standards and depth of knowledge, ease
of use and support, and engage-ment and ability to meet
student needs.

Choosing Culturally Relevant On-Grade Instructional Materials

As such, they must be culturally relevant; that is, they reflect and accommodate cultural plurality in order to support student learning in diverse classrooms.
