- 2. BBC RADIO 2 [88-90.2 FM] series SIX SILVER STRINGS (Thu 10pm)
finishes its run with Johnny Smith, Stan Getz and veteran jazz guitarist George
Van Epps (5th Mar); Ivor Mairants and Martin Taylor (12th); John Lee Hooker,
Ry Cooder , George Benson and The Count Basie Orchestra (19th); Ledbelly,
Wes Montgomery and David Grisman (26th). JAZZ PARADE (Mon-Fri night
12.05-12.35am) has concert recordings by Dizzy Gillespie (24/25th Mar) and
Chick Corea (31st/1st); sessions by The All-Star British Jazz Band (2nd), Chris
Biscoe (4th), Janisch Carmello (11th), Barbara Thompson & The Bruce
Thompson Trio (18th), The Colville Collection (23rd); interviews with Joe
Temperley (3rd), Marion Montgomery (10th), Wally Faulks (17th). Seven
concerts at London's Jazz Café this month are being recorded for broadcast
on consecutive Wednesdays in May/Jun. VOICES (Sat night 12.05-1am)
presenter Dave Gelly spotlights Hoagy Carmichael (7th Mar), Johnny Mercer
(21st) and Tony Bennett (28th). THE SOUND OF SINATRA (Sat 4-5pm) is a
13-part retrospective starting 28th Mar by American DJ Sid Mark, who has
presented programmes exclusively about Frank for 35 years on over 100 radio
stations. ROBERT CUSHMAN'S SONGBOOK (Tue 8-9pm) is a new six-part
series starting 24th Mar that explores Cushman's perspective on the history of
American popular song. Jazz is touched upon and artists include Sinatra,
Hoagy Carmichael and Nina Simone.
BBC RADIO 3 [90.2-92.4 FM] has given up its crackly AM channel in
preparation for a new national commercial radio station. OUTSIDE IN
FESTIVAL (Mon 10.30-11.30pm) on 9th Mar showcases Peter King and The
Julian Joseph Quartet (including Jean Toussaint) recorded at Crawley last
year. MONDAY JAZZ CONCERT (Mon 10-11.30pm) on 23rd Mar promises
an unmissable performance by Geri Allen, accompanied by Charlie Hadden
and Paul Motian, plus The Louis Sclavis Quartet. THE HONKY TONK MAN
(Fri 6.30-7pm) profiles legendary American blues pianists: Walter Roland who
wrote about the poverty and disaster of The Depression (6th Mar), Chicago
men Cripple Clarence Lofton (13th) and Jimmy Yancey (20th), and Big Maceo
whose right arm was tragically paralysed by a stroke (27th).
BBC BRISTOL, CORNWALL, DEVON, SOMERSET, GLOUCESTERSHIRE,
GUERNSEY, JERSEY, SOLENT, WILTSHIRE. On 25th Mar, The Bruce
Boardman Trio and Michael Hashim are in session on Chris Walker's JAZZ
SOUNDS (Wed 8.05-9.25pm).
BBC WORLD SERVICE [648 AM & SW] takes the JAZZ SCENE quiz (Tue
12.30-1am & 8.30-9am) to Ronnie Scott's new Birmingham club (2nd & 9th
Mar) with guests Bob Wilber, Oliver Jones and Ken Rattenbury. Then back to
Ronnie's London branch (16th) with Acker Bilk, Campbell Burnap and George
Coleman; and up the road to the 100 Club (23rd) with Humphrey Lyttleton,
George Melly, Tommy Burton and … Ronnie Scott.
JAZZ FM [London 102.2 FM] continues THE MARTINI HOUR LIVE FROM
RONNIE SCOTT'S (Sun 3-4pm) with recordings of Gonzalo Rubalcaba &
Leroy Osbourne (1st Mar), Cedar Walton & Ian Shaw (8th), Judith Owen
(15th), Dave Holland & Art Porter (22nd), Andy Sheppard (29th). SPECIAL
WEEKENDS spotlight specific artists with lots of their music and related

George Crockett's JAZZ RECORD PROGRAMME to a new slot on Sunday
10pm-midnight.
