From the choices available, please select which pattern should come next in the
sequence. Then click on the corresponding answer choice (A, B, C, D, E) below.
3. Logical (Abstract) Reasoning Test Tutorial
Logical Reasoning Tests belong to a category of Aptitude Tests called Non Verbal Reasoning Tests
because they rely on visual representation of and solutions to problems, arguments, questions.
Non Verbal Reasoning tests are designed to measure one’s ability to reason logically and to
understand new ideas, in other words, to think critically.
There are four key types of Non Verbal Reasoning tests: Logical (Abstract) Reasoning, Diagrammatical
Reasoning, Spatial Reasoning and Mechanical Reasoning.
Also known as Abstract Reasoning tests, Logical Reasoning Tests (LRT) are used to measure your
general intellectual reasoning ability (using the first principles)
There are 3 types of Abstract Reasoning tests:
• Identify the feature in common – used rarely
• Complete series of patterns/diagrams – a popular format, used by SHL, Kenexa, etc
• Complete matrices consisting of shapes and patterns – used by others
There are 2 steps involved in the Logical Reasoning Test (LRT):
• Identify the underlying logic of a set of sequences (series) of patterns, diagrams, shapes,
symbols, etc
• Based on the identified series (or order) of patterns, predict the next pattern or the missing
pattern in the sequence
This Tutorial will focus on the most popular type of Abstract Reasoning Test which is commonly called
Logical Reasoning Test by largest test providers such as SHL and Kenexa: the test based on series of
shapes, diagrams and/or patterns.
4. Logical Reasoning Test Structure and Use
There are 3 tasks involved to solve each Logical Reasoning Test problem:
1. Identify individual shapes (symbols) in a pattern and what they have in common
• Shapes: such as triangles, squares, circles, stars, hexagons, etc
• Size: e.g. small, medium, large
• Colour: black, grey or white and different textures (striped, dotted, etc)
• Features: number of circles, stars, lines or points
2. Identify the entire pattern series (sequence) and the rules under which it develops
• E.g. shapes are grouped or ordered, do they rotate, swap, alternate, get replaced, etc
3. Predict the next (or missing) pattern based on the above identified series
• Apply the rules discovered above to construct the next (or missing) pattern and select the
correct pattern from the answer choices
Examples of common operations:
• Rotation or turning of a shape or shapes
• Alternating or interchanging shapes: shapes change into something else or alternate among themselves
• Swapping shapes or patterns: shapes or pair of shapes swap places constantly, in a set order
• Cue (trigger): shapes change to sth if a trigger is activated. E.g. when a pattern has a little star in it, the
number of shapes increases by two, if there is no star, then they stay the same.
• Unique features: a pattern has unique features such as a certain number of dots, lines, etc
• Consistency: a change is made and is then consistently applied
• Replacement or disappearance: shape or shapes are replaced by others or disappearing altogether
5. Content – VIDEO tutorials
1. Introduction
2. Shapes that move clockwise or counter-clockwise
3. Alternating or interchanging shapes
4. Shapes that change and swap positions
5. Rotating or turning shapes
6. Shapes that change under the control of a cue
7. Shapes and patterns changed by a combination of operations
8. Consistency in patterns
9. Shapes that move horizontally vertically diagonally
10. Constructive patterns
6. Content of the LRT preparation pack
It is organised into 9+ categories and the Video Tutorials section will be continuously
expanded with new additions (for FREE, during your subscription period)
Each category focusses on a specific type of operations/components that distinguish
particular sequences of patterns.
For example, one category includes sequences where shapes or diagrams move or turn in a
clockwise or counter-clockwise manner. Another category may focus on rotating shapes
while a third one may be contain patterns that change under the control of a cue.
Each Category Tutorial VIDEO is between 8 minutes and 15 minutes long AND features
several examples with visual explanations regarding how sequences of patterns develop.
If you want to master Non-Verbal Logical (Inductive or Abstract) Reasoning Test skills, then
you should spend time watching and reviewing ALL the provided videos.
Once you have reviewed the Tutorial Videos you should be able to practice your learned
skills by taking our 3 unique practice tests.
Our surveys indicate that the customers who have learned from the video tutorials and
taken the practice tests, are likely to perform up to 50% better (after using the tutorials)
AND that 50% could be the difference between passing and failing an actual test.
Good luck and please provide feedback in order for us to continue improving our products.
