2. Validators
• If you are interested in becoming a validator contact
your country lead and email enquiry@globalsurg.org
with your name, grade and centre
• You will be emailed a copy of the validation protocol,
a set of instructions and a link to register to the
REDCap data collection system
3. Registration
• To register fill out the form using the following link:

• Please note it may take up to 14 days before
registration details are emailed out
• Once you have your username and password, login
at: https://redcap.cir.ed.ac.uk/
4. The Validation Process
• There are 2 components to the data validation
process:
1. Data accuracy- done by finding cases at your
centre and entering the data into REDCap again.
2. Case ascertainment- calculated by looking at the
number of eligible procedures at a centre. This
will be fed back to REDCap via an email survey
link.
5. Validation Form 2
• Log in to REDCap using the username supplied to
your email and the password you created.
• Then click “My Projects”, which takes you to the
home screen
• Select “GlobalSurg 2 validation data”
• On the menu on the left of the screen under “Data
Collection” click “Patient points”
7. Validation Form 2
• The first drop down menu “Incomplete Records” lists every
patient submitted over the first 2 week period at your centre.
• Identify the date of the operation for the first patient
• You can click on ‘Data Exports, Reports and Stats’ then click
‘View Report’ to see all the data for your centre.
• Use the best method of identifying eligible patients at your
centre to look back at records starting from this date for a
total period of two weeks
• Count the number of eligible cases and complete question 3
on the “Centre Validation Details” form
9. Validation Forms
• Using the best methods for patient
identification at your centre, complete a
separate “Patient points” form for each
patient in the drop down list.
• You can see all the patients dates of inclusion
and operation using the ‘Data Exports,
Reports and Stats’ tool in the left hand toolbar
of the ‘GlobalSurg 2 validation data’ project.

11. Case ascertainment
• In order to calculate case ascertainment, you should look at
records at your centre such as theatre logbooks, notes and
electronic records to work out who was operated upon at
your centre and why.
• Then compare this with the GlobalSurg-2 inclusion criteria.
This can be found in the GlobalSurg-2 protocol.
• Work out the number of patients who should have been
included during the 2 week validation period.
• Enter this number via the REDCap email survey link.
12. Case ascertainment 2
• The case ascertainment
survey link will be sent
to your email once you
complete the form.
• We will also remind you
to complete this every
10 days via automated
REDCap contact, so you
have the link accessible.
• Simply complete the
three fields.
