Global Health College Proudly Celebrates National Nurses Week May 6-12
Alexandria, Virginia -- Every year, National Nurses Week focuses attention on the diverse ways
America's 3.1 million registered nurses work to save lives and to improve the health of millions
of individuals. This year, the American Nurses Association (ANA) has selected "Culture of
safety—it starts with you!" as the theme for 2016. Global Health College is pleased to participate
in National Nurses Week and recognize our nursing faculty and students who work
collaboratively to establish skills and behaviors that contribute to a culture of safety.
Global Health College kicks off the week of celebration with a historical exhibit providing
information on key milestones in the nursing profession. The exhibit highlights the significance
of what the nursing cap, pins, and lamp represent. The theme “Culture of Safety – it starts with
you” is an integral part of Global Health College’s week-long educational activities.
Additionally, the faculty will be dressing up as historical figures such as Florence Nightingale,
Mary Eliza Mahoney the first professionally trained African-American nurse, Walt Whitman a
famous poet who served as a nurse during the Civil War, and Mary Seacole a pioneering nurse
and heroine of the Crimean War, providing an engaging and enriching learning experience for
students.
Traditionally, National Nurses Week is devoted to focusing on the varied ways in which
registered nurses, who comprise the largest health care profession, are working to improve health
care. From bedside nursing in hospitals and long-term care facilities to the halls of research
institutions, state legislatures, and Congress, the depth and breadth of the nursing profession is
meeting the expanding health care needs of American society.
