attention

china pots ect
Q8: Do you consider taking up Art & Design, Graphics, D&T, Product Design or any other
craft based course for GCSE or A levels? If you have already or are currently studying

no because i dont like drawing unless i want to try and draw something but it takes up to much time
Q9: What are or have been the crafting trends at your school/college?
paper mache
Q10: How beneficial do you think is a crafting degree to society and your future, why?
maybe as a back up job OR AS A FULL TIME JOB
Q1: What is your age?
13-15 : 4 Participants
Q2: How would you define craft in your own words?
-Craft is a skill which could used in a mixture of different medias
-Creating something new
-Make something by myself
-Depending on the context, craft could mean that you are good with you hands when molding art
or creating art. However it could also be assumed that you are "crafty" which suggest that a person
is clever when reaching an aim in a decisive matter.
Q3: Have you engaged in any craft making activities in the past and recently, please say
which ones? e.g when you were in primary school.
-In secondary school
-Resistance materials , textiles, art
-In Design and Technology lesson. Made a pair bookend.
-In primary school, I've created clothes due to my textile lessons and in secondary I've created
chair, mobile phone cases, jewellery boxes due to my RM classes.
Q4: What is your favourite craft activity? Please specify whether you enjoy taking part or
just admiring it and why.
-I admire it when it is aesthetically pleasing but I love taking part because I enjoy the
experience and participation
-Resistance materials. It is fun to know you can make things just a good as other products
however not in a factory.
-I don't really have one. But I like making things by myself
-I love painting because it is a peaceful and soothing thing to do.
Q5: Do you consider craft as a viable career option or just a hobby, why?
-I consider it as a hobby seeing as I can use it as a past time but as a career option as well
because if you are talented in a craft you can do it as a job
-It could be a valuable career option. However I consider it a hobby for its a popular skill many
people have.
-Maybe. Cuz it is a life skill if I know how to do crafting.
-It would just be a hobby for me because my heart is set on dermatology.
Q6: From your perspective what is cool/dope, and how would you define “cool”?
-From my perspective I find it cool defining cool as trending in this generation because it is new
ways of expressing yourself and new ways of showcasing what you can do as a person
-To have sweeg. To be different fromother people
-Look awesome
-Something that has an unusual yet new edge to something. However a person could be
defined as cool, and personally I feel as though this describes someone as down to earth.
Q7: What aspects of crafting do you believe can be considered as being cool, why?
-The aspect of the aesthetics and the way you use that media in an inventive way as being cool
because if you use it in a plain boring way that wouldn't capture the attention of the audience
seeing as crafting something is a art form which people love to watch.
-To be able to create something that not everyone can do. E.g. making a product from scratch
-I'm not sure...
-The finish product because you can feel and visually see what you have created.
Q8: Do you consider taking up Art & Design, Graphics, D&T, Product Design or any other
craft based course for GCSE or A levels? If you have already or are currently studying
please specify which and why. If you have not studied a creative subject please also explain
why.
-I’m already doing art as a GCSE because I would like to open my options of jobs instead of
sticking to core subjects I broadening my options by picking subjects which can help overall in life
-I wanted to take up product design and dt but wasn't able to due to the amount of subjects I was
taking. I would have like to have taken them because I think it would be a useful life skill in the
future. I enjoy the more performing arts side of creativity although they intertwine with each other
which is why I also believe that product design is a good subject to take up being a subject where
you could make your designs on how the design is meant to be.
-Maybe... Same answer. I like making things by myself and show to someone else.
-Because I feel as though they won't take me anywhere unless I want to work in archeology,
teaching etc.
Q9: What are or have been the crafting trends at your school/college?
-The crafting trend in my school is fashion even though you don't do a subject to do what crafting
everyone loves to have a sense of style to express themselves
-In textiles we usually make pillow cases and rm usually storage cases or jewellery stands.
Products that would be used rather than for decorations.
-Bracelets in Primary School.
-I have no idea.
Q10: How beneficial do you think is a crafting degree to society and your future, why?
-It is beneficial because instead of living in a boring world we would live in a creative one in
which children growing up is inspired to do their own thing without being drawn in to the
industry of materialistic things like money/banking
-I think crafting is beneficial to the society because more and more products are being invented
as technology improves. This means with higher technology our generation could expand our
product design and exchange trading with other countries.
-At least I don't have to spend much money on buying then making.
-It's beneficial when it comes to tourism because that is a source of income for the country.
Q1: What is your age?
16-18 : 3 Participants
Q2: How would you define craft in your own words?
-Creativityin hand - made items
-The art of making something with your own two hands.
-I would define crafting as creating things from scratch). I don't think it is necessarily always
useable but it seems fun to actually make stuff yourself :)
Q3: Have you engaged in any craft making activities in the past and recently, please say
which ones? e.g when you were in primary school.
-I was in a crafts club in primary school and I help my little sister with her crafting activities.
-I have participated in many crafting activities. Not quite sure what ones but I have.
-When I was in year 5 (which was about 6 years ago) as a class we made giant sculptures of
people to promote recycling. It consisted of plastic bag clothing and paper mache heads and
plastic bottle arms etc. Last year I was really into origami and that included stars, giant hearts, 3D
hearts etc but mostly simple things. I made a mini bag out of felt material in year 9 for textiles
class. In primary school, we made clay pots and A LOT of decorations out of paper. I used to make
necklaces and bracelets with some string and beads when I was in primary school. I've taken art
for GCSES.
Q4: What is your favourite craft activity? Please specify whether you enjoy taking part or
just admiring it and why.
-Drawing, colouring and painting. I enjoy taking part in them because it allows me to express my
emotions and thoughts on a canvas.
-I'm not quite sure. That's pretty hard. I kinda don't know what i've crafted from the past as well >.<
-I enjoy origami because I think when you get a good outcome, it just makes you really happy but i
guess the same goes for other crafts. I also enjoy painting.
Q5: Do you consider craft as a viable career option or just a hobby, why?
-Hobby. I haven't done enough craft in my life to make it a career.
-It can be viewed as both. People devote their lives to the art of craft. E.G. Textiles, Art, Wood
Making etc. Or you could just do it to take your mind of things, enter your own little world. knit a
scarf, make a pillow etc.
-Both, because hobbies can turn into a career. If you're good at your hobby there shouldn't be an
issue in you changing that into a career. However, I think this only goes for certain parts of crafting
like jewellery making or sculpting etc.
Q6: From your perspective what is cool/dope, and how would you define “cool”?
-I have never put a definition to "cool" before, but now I would say it is anything that I can admire
and anything that I like.
-Cool is someone who's awesome. i would define cool as someone badass and just upfront, just
there. I'm an anime person so you should get my point ;)
-I have no idea honestly. I use the word cool for things that fascinate me or make me feel
excited. I wouldn't really know how to define cool but i would think that you can use it in place of
"wow" or "extraordinary".
Q7: What aspects of crafting do you believe can be considered as being cool, why?
-I find spray paint art verycool because you can create any type of scene on a canvas within
minutes and produce beautiful pieces of art.
-All aspects could be considered cool. It depends on the point of view you have. You can create
a cuboid out of any material and may not think that's cool, but if you view it from that most
pyramids are built from huge cuboids, you'll realise that it is kinda cool. Something so simple, so
easy could create new and unique things.
-The actual process of crafting is cool in my opinion. It's interesting to see the effort that the
crafter puts and the attention that they put at being intricate to get a good outcome. I just think
"wow" haha
Q8: Do you consider taking up Art & Design, Graphics, D&T, Product Design or any other
craft based course for GCSE or A levels? If you have already or are currently studying
please specify which and why. If you have not studied a creative subject please also explain
why.
-I am doing Digital Design because I enjoy putting my creativity to use through computers - but I
still enjoy crafts as a hobby.
-I have taken textiles for my GCSE. I took this because it was the best subject out of the ones I
could had picked, and it was actually fun and I enjoyed it alot.
-I have studied Art & Design for GCSEs (which I completed this year, so right now I'm in year 12). I
done it because all my other subjects were mostly academic and I wanted a creative subject in
there and out of textiles, D&T and Art & Design, Art& Design just seemed the most desirable and
interesting, plus I'm not very good with sawing and sewing XD. I didn't carry it on at ALevels
because I felt that even at GCSEs it was VERY time consuming and I also felt that it wouldn't really
benefit me with my possible career paths.
Q9: What are or have been the crafting trends at your school/college?
-None.
-I'm not sure.
-I'm not sure what you exactly mean but Art & Design, Textiles and D&T are very popular GCSEs
in my school (well they were when I was in year 11).
Q10: How beneficial do you think is a crafting degree to society and your future, why?
-It would enhance people's creativity because they would be physically creating products.
-Again, that depends on what you want to do for your future. It all depends on what you want to do.
You wouldn't want to learn textiles or DT to end up as a chef for example.
-I'm not sure exactly what youre asking but I'll answer to the best of my ability. I think it is very
beneficial to society because I feel like society is missing creativeness and colour, and I feel like
people with crafting degrees can contribute to society by basically making the area appear more
attractive and happy basically. I feel like people are so inclined to just getting good Academic
grades (which isnt necessarily bad) that we end up missing out on the creativity that many people
actually have. So I feel like someone with a crafting degree would open up pathways for many
people in society because it may help them realise that you don't just have to go into an academic
based degree.
Q1: What is your age?
19-21:7 Participants
Q2: How would you define craft in your own words?
-Innovative 3D art.
-A skill that is artistic in nature
-Using your imagination to create things from everydays items
-Something handmade- commonly artistic but not always. Something requiring skillful handiwork
-Making something using your hands
-To make, to develop a skill as an individual
-A creative project/process
Q3: Have you engaged in any craft making activities in the past and recently, please say
which ones? e.g when you were in primary school.
-Creating 3D house model in primary, graphics in secondary, card-making at home.
-Not really
-Graphic design
Origami (does that count?)
Scrapbooking
Handmade card making
-All the time- I sculpt figurines. I sew and make teddy bears.
-Yes, mainly in primary and secondary school. Made a Jacob ladder, for example.
-I have never, but in terms of self teaching outside school, relating to my idea of craft being a skill, i
have self taught myself through tutorials, into baking (think that counts) cooking, from cupcakes to
cheesecakes, to typical traditional recipes such as spaghetti and fajitas.
-Yes building models, more recently sewing and kniting
Q4: What is your favourite craft activity? Please specify whether you enjoy taking part or
just admiring it and why.
-Card-making
-Recently, cakes/baking -admiring
Fashion - admiring
-I enjoy scrapbooking, because it's so fun to do & you get to basically be as creative as you like :)
-Sculpting- I love sculpting because it works as a stress release. It goes further from sketching- you
can sketch an idea and then bring it to life.
-Admiring because lots of people undertake lots of different styles of crafts and it's fascinating
-Illustrations, (if drawing counts) I take part in this as a casual blogger of sketches. I have also
begun to create crochet dolls, which is extremely difficult, other than that, its the typical self taught
origami.
-I enjoy taking part rather than watching, and my favourite would be building something out of
materials
Q5: Do you consider craft as a viable career option or just a hobby, why?
-N.o, just a
hobby.
-If you are talented and have the opportunities to do something with it, then yes - you could make a
good career out of it
-A viable career option. People can use social media to advertise their work & gain attention
-I think it is possible to make it a very successful business however you have to be very good at
what you do AS WELL AS networking, advertising etc I prefer it as a hobby.
-Viable career option because I believe that your career is something you enjoy and not
necessarily only being an accountant or secretary
-Just a hobby, unless it manages to expand as an potential business.
-Probably just as a hobby, it's quite hard to get recognised and become successful with a craft,
would be easier with a conventional job
Q6: From your perspective what is cool/dope, and how would you define “cool”?
-Something that grabs attention and means a lot to an individual.
-Interesting, trendy, awe inspiring in a way, different, chic
-Cool/dope is something that can be considered awesome & current. Usually determined by
society.
Cool is defined as something that a lot of people like.
-Something that makes me think wow. Usually it tends to be something with a lot of attitude and
character or presence even if it is an object. Cool is a very broad term, anything you perceive
positively can be called 'cool'.
-Cool is when you look at something and are like “wow"
-something to show off, key rings, little figurines, that are easily made through clay molding, and
the use of an oven to harden the figure.
-I believe something 'cool' is something you enjoy and take pleasure in rather than something
'popular'
Q7: What aspects of crafting do you believe can be considered as being cool, why?
-Creating something for someone else, creating something unique, DIY aspect.
-The imagination and creativity, and the ability to create something from their imagination
-The creativity because that's down to individuality which can also be cool
-Being able to create something 3d- when you imagine something flat, lifeless but you can bring it
into your world. To make your idea physical. Crafting allows you to create something that others
have to buy or seek out. You can just...make it.
-The originality in each piece because it's interesting how different people craft so differently
-when it can be used in the future, like currently i'm interesting in crochet, it may seen womanly or
even elderly due to it being yarn stitching, and think of granny jumpers, but i've found many
bloggers whom used this skill to create popular fictional characters such as Pokemon.
-The final product of the craft is probably very cool as it's seeing all the little pieces come together
to make something big
Q8: Do you consider taking up Art & Design, Graphics, D&T, Product Design or any other
craft based course for GCSE or A levels? If you have already or are currently studying
please specify which and why. If you have not studied a creative subject please also explain
why.
-No, never been good at it enough to consider it as something to do seriously.
-No, didn't study it. I'm really bad at arts and crafts, and to be honest, it was not encouraged in my
family.
-Did consider graphics but never did it.. totally regret it.
-I took Art GCSE and A levels. I took it because I was relatively good at it and I needed a subject
that I could 'just do'. It needed no revision etc and I had plenty artistic ideas for my final exams. It
gave me more time to revise for my remaining 3 exams.
-Im not very good at artsy kind of things
-Textiles (GCSE) Graphic design (A Level) Graphic and Media Design (Uni) I have an always,
been slightly interested in making as their was always time and space to explore it as another
subject, but before i knew it, it was a direction to go towards.
-No, although i would have liked to. My parents would not have approved of an art choice
Q9: What are or have been the crafting trends at your school/college?
-Loom bands, scooby strings.
-No
-Loom bands were the craze for a while
-Crafting was generally discouraged. It was kept for the students who couldn't paint or draw well.
Towards the end of my final year it was being more accepted that crafting could take on the form of
beautiful art and achieve high marks.
-Very minimal
-This is a difficult questions, because i'm sure I've never seen kids come to school with something
they made, and show off about how amazing they are. if its crafting, i can only think of paper
planes, always trying to make one that looks cool, and fly the longest distance.
-Keyrings were a big thing in secondary and primary, and scooby doos
Q10: How beneficial do you think is a crafting degree to society and your future, why?
-Useful economically if done on a large scale, can be used for charity events, teach children to be
creative, may have therapeutic benefits- stress relief.
-I wouldn't say it is essential in the way doctors, engineers, scientist are to development of the
world etc. But crafts/ are essential to enjoying life. Like doctors and scientists help to prolong life,
and the creativity and beauty around is what makes life worth living. Everything has it's benefits,
and has it own way of contributing to society.
But on a scale of priorities, and vitalness to human life - I'm sure you can see why, a crafting
degree is not that high on the list
-Depends on what is to be done with the degree. Always good if its to further your career
-If you are planning on working within an organisation I think it would be very beneficial. However
working individually and in small scale- it is not usually needed. Crafting is (especially the artistic
form) very visual- people see a wonderful craft and they want it or want to take part etc they don't
stop to think oh... does this person have a degree in woodworking? It just doesn't happen.
-I think it is vital to our society because we can't just all be stuck to the mainstream ideas of career
paths as we all different parts of a human body that work together in order to work efficiently.
-For society it is probably useful as it can be educational and therapeutic, but for my future it may
not be as beneficial in financial terms
Q1: What is your age?
22-24 : 6 Participants
Q2: How would you define craft in your own words?
-Creative pieces of art made by hand
-Hands on projects.
-Creativity, innovation, experimentation
-Stuff that you do that is a hobby, & made by you!
-Art
-Making things up
Q3: Have you engaged in any craft making activities in the past and recently, please say
which ones? e.g when you were in primary school.
-Yes I built a bridge and a disposable camera model when I was in high school
-There were many in primary school such as paper mache, lego building and even when doing art.
Where at times there was more than just painting or drawing.
-in primary school i remember it was coming up to chinese new year so we had to make a dragon
from coloured card
-I don't remember tbh, I am the least creative person
-When i'm in 6th form
-Primary school, recycling bottles as flowers
Q4: What is your favourite craft activity? Please specify whether you enjoy taking part or
just admiring it and why.
-I enjoy making origami
-I'm not sure if textiles counts towards crafting but definitely textiles form secondary school for me
was one of the best experiences I've had in terms of both learning and doing.
-i enjoy taking part because it gives me an understanding of how things work, at the same time i
also like to watch because i like to admire people's engineering skills and craftsmanship
-I just like admiring it and appreciating other people's talents
-My craft activity was product design, I love designing and using the 3D printer to create
prototypes. -crocheting.
Q5: Do you consider craft as a viable career option or just a hobby, why?
-I think it would be more of a hobby, unless you were extremely talented and could open a
successful business of hand-made items
-I do, it definitely is a viable career as for me it goes with design, building crafting is part of the
same family. Where you say put ideas into actions by actually doing or making.
-Both really, start as a hobby and sell yourself to the public, show off your skills and maybe
someday this hobby will become a career. Its possible
-Just a hobby! Unless you are really good at it. & you see w career in it
-Can be both, career option would be along the lines of becoming an inventor and anything you
have passion on can be treat as a hobby.
-Both, as you can earn money in some.
Q6: From your perspective what is cool/dope, and how would you define “cool”?
-Cool is something that fits into the trend of the current generation, it can also be expressed at
something that amazes you (look that car has three wheel, that's so cool!)
-I guess cool / dope at times would be something you see or enjoy but maybe cannot do? Not that
its impossible to do but at the time you're unable to do or perform such a thing. For example I find
scuba diving / Lion dancing a really cool fun thing. I'm unable to do it now or participate in these
activities but that doesn't mean I wont be able to in the future.
-amazing, out of the ordinary, sick fam, wish i could do that.
-Something that is accepted with most people. Like ice creams are cool
-Cool is something in fashion or for the fact that you like how it looks / feels
-Something that you don't see everyday
Q7: What aspects of crafting do you believe can be considered as being cool, why?
-The originality, complexity and uniqueness of each piece is cool
-It's most definitely the process or during the crafting. The bit where either as team working on a
particular thing together or alone just minding your own business and getting the job done.
-any type, im not fussy as i am in to all sorts of crafts
-Knitting, and embroidery. DiY making stuff
-Origami, to be able to create any object using just paper is incredible!
-No idea , anything you do can be considered cool.
Q8: Do you consider taking up Art & Design, Graphics, D&T, Product Design or any other
craft based course for GCSE or A levels? If you have already or are currently studying
please specify which and why. If you have not studied a creative subject please also explain
why.
-I already studied Design and Technology, because it interested me and I could express my
creativity in that subject.
-I would yes. Not only is it very different in terms of the learning and the actual course itself
compared to your iterative English Maths and Science, it helps to express yourself in different
forms.
I did Textiles as a choice for year 10 and 11. Main reasons why would be simply because I enjoyed
the aspects of it during my early years of secondary school and wanted to further pursue and see
how creative I can be.
-i picked art and graphics for my extra choice in gcse because art is my passion, i also chose the
same for A levels too. I just really enjoyed these subjects, and people will always tell you "do
something you enjoy”
-For other people maybe, not so much for me
-I did study "Product Design" and the reason so is because I like making things with my hands
-D&T - it was a "cool" subject cutting and making things of your own to your style
Q9: What are or have been the crafting trends at your school/college?
-They encourage students to express their creativeness
-After secondary school I haven't been involved too much around the art / craft scene if you will but
I do wish I had looked or kept up with it a bit more.
-its been a while i cannot remember lol
-idk
-Dress making
-Textiles
Q10: How beneficial do you think is a crafting degree to society and your future, why?
-.
-I think that craft is definitely underwhelmed or underrated in our world. People don't realise or see
how much these smaller sectors bring to life and what exactly is the main purpose of them. For
example without crafts or arts how colourless the world may be or how plain it can look with all the
hidden creative minds that are not found or allowed the chance to expand and explore.
You can look at it exactly the same as the left and right side of the brain. Where the left brain is the
more numerical side and the right is the creative.
Same with the world, the arts and craft side of everything would be our right side of the world/ brain
whereas the left side would be most other things business wise or politics etc. This is not me
saying business and politics are not creative or so but rather just a simple illustration on what
crafting degree's can bring to our society and future.
-None at all. Because you can build a portfolio based on your skills, your skills is what people are
looking for, regardless of some degree, you get a degree because you've been studying in uni for a
few years. Thats just a few years! When you finish uni you still have the rest of your life to do
crafting (if you choose to). After getting your degree it may open doors for. But how about if you
don't have a degree. Would you give up only because uni says you failed? . I happened to stumble
across a fashion designer one day, with no qualifications because i was too lazy in college.
Showed him my art work and he wanted me to work for him, so here i am. Fuck a degree ??
-Very beneficial.
-Very beneficial as I always strive to be a DIY man, why pay someone to do a job when you can do
better yourself
-Might do.
Q1: What is your age?
25-30

which ones? e.g when you were in primary school.
Yes, Art and Photography youth clubs
Q4: What is your favourite craft activity? Please specify whether you enjoy taking part or
just admiring it and why.
Lego, it's broad range of construction capabilities and challenges your imagination.
Q5: Do you consider craft as a viable career option or just a hobby, why?
Both, if inspiration meets physical ability you can take your hobby into a career. Motivation is the
key to making that connection a reality.
Q6: From your perspective what is cool/dope, and how would you define “cool”?
Cool is inspirational and brings in crowds of people to participate, to aspire to become, to need the
same.
Q7: What aspects of crafting do you believe can be considered as being cool, why?
The creative stages where the imagination takes place
Q8: Do you consider taking up Art & Design, Graphics, D&T, Product Design or any other
craft based course for GCSE or A levels? If you have already or are currently studying
please specify which and why. If you have not studied a creative subject please also explain
why.
Have taken and wished I had continued to do so, it was an enjoyable part of my youth and I feel
that anyone who has an ambition and passion for it should.
Q9: What are or have been the crafting trends at your school/college?
Not sure...
Q10: How beneficial do you think is a crafting degree to society and your future, why?
Very beneficial, it is important that craft remains part of our world to enable us to further our
creativity which may have benefits to our world.
Q1: What is your age?
30+
Q2: How would you define craft in your own words?
A job as in 'What is your craft?'
Q3: Have you engaged in any craft making activities in the past and recently, please say
which ones? e.g when you were in primary school.
No
Q4: What is your favourite craft activity? Please specify whether you enjoy taking part or
just admiring it and why.
I don't enjoy craft so never take part.
Q5: Do you consider craft as a viable career option or just a hobby, why?
I think it is viable job for those who enjoy it.
Q6: From your perspective what is cool/dope, and how would you define “cool”?
Cool is doing whatever you find interesting and not caring what other people think.
Q7: What aspects of crafting do you believe can be considered as being cool, why?
I don't because I don't enjoy it. But I think it is cool that other people are creative.
Q8: Do you consider taking up Art & Design, Graphics, D&T, Product Design or any other
craft based course for GCSE or A levels? If you have already or are currently studying
please specify which and why. If you have not studied a creative subject please also explain
why.
It didn't interest me beyond casual appreciation so I never studied it.
Q9: What are or have been the crafting trends at your school/college?
I don't know.
Q10: How beneficial do you think is a crafting degree to society and your future, why?
I think it is beneficial because it makes up our culture. When archaeologists study old civilisations,
they study the people craft as that was what was left behind. It's important we encourage
craft/creative jobs so that we can express ourselves and show future generations what life is like
for is. Also, it's another way to communicate with people which is important.

However it could also be assumed that you are "crafty" which suggest that a person is clever when reaching an aim in a decisive matter. Q3: Have you engaged in any craft making activities in the past and recently, please say which ones? e.g when you were in primary school. -In secondary school -Resistance materials , textiles, art -In Design and Technology lesson. Made a pair bookend. -In primary school, I've created clothes due to my textile lessons and in secondary I've created chair, mobile phone cases, jewellery boxes due to my RM classes. Q4: What is your favourite craft activity? Please specify whether you enjoy taking part or just admiring it and why. -I admire it when it is aesthetically pleasing but I love taking part because I enjoy the experience and participation -Resistance materials. It is fun to know you can make things just a good as other products however not in a factory. -I don't really have one. But I like making things by myself -I love painting because it is a peaceful and soothing thing to do. Q5: Do you consider craft as a viable career option or just a hobby, why? -I consider it as a hobby seeing as I can use it as a past time but as a career option as well because if you are talented in a craft you can do it as a job -It could be a valuable career option. However I consider it a hobby for its a popular skill many people have. -Maybe. Cuz it is a life skill if I know how to do crafting.
  • 2. -It would just be a hobby for me because my heart is set on dermatology. Q6: From your perspective what is cool/dope, and how would you define “cool”? -From my perspective I find it cool defining cool as trending in this generation because it is new ways of expressing yourself and new ways of showcasing what you can do as a person -To have sweeg. To be different fromother people -Look awesome -Something that has an unusual yet new edge to something. However a person could be defined as cool, and personally I feel as though this describes someone as down to earth. Q7: What aspects of crafting do you believe can be considered as being cool, why? -The aspect of the aesthetics and the way you use that media in an inventive way as being cool because if you use it in a plain boring way that wouldn't capture the attention of the audience seeing as crafting something is a art form which people love to watch. -To be able to create something that not everyone can do. E.g. making a product from scratch -I'm not sure... -The finish product because you can feel and visually see what you have created. Q8: Do you consider taking up Art & Design, Graphics, D&T, Product Design or any other craft based course for GCSE or A levels? If you have already or are currently studying please specify which and why. If you have not studied a creative subject please also explain why. -I’m already doing art as a GCSE because I would like to open my options of jobs instead of sticking to core subjects I broadening my options by picking subjects which can help overall in life -I wanted to take up product design and dt but wasn't able to due to the amount of subjects I was taking. I would have like to have taken them because I think it would be a useful life skill in the future. I enjoy the more performing arts side of creativity although they intertwine with each other which is why I also believe that product design is a good subject to take up being a subject where you could make your designs on how the design is meant to be. -Maybe... Same answer. I like making things by myself and show to someone else. -Because I feel as though they won't take me anywhere unless I want to work in archeology, teaching etc. Q9: What are or have been the crafting trends at your school/college? -The crafting trend in my school is fashion even though you don't do a subject to do what crafting everyone loves to have a sense of style to express themselves -In textiles we usually make pillow cases and rm usually storage cases or jewellery stands. Products that would be used rather than for decorations. -Bracelets in Primary School. -I have no idea. Q10: How beneficial do you think is a crafting degree to society and your future, why? -It is beneficial because instead of living in a boring world we would live in a creative one in which children growing up is inspired to do their own thing without being drawn in to the industry of materialistic things like money/banking -I think crafting is beneficial to the society because more and more products are being invented as technology improves. This means with higher technology our generation could expand our product design and exchange trading with other countries. -At least I don't have to spend much money on buying then making. -It's beneficial when it comes to tourism because that is a source of income for the country. Q1: What is your age? 16-18 : 3 Participants Q2: How would you define craft in your own words? -Creativityin hand - made items -The art of making something with your own two hands. -I would define crafting as creating things from scratch). I don't think it is necessarily always useable but it seems fun to actually make stuff yourself :)
  • 3. Q3: Have you engaged in any craft making activities in the past and recently, please say which ones? e.g when you were in primary school. -I was in a crafts club in primary school and I help my little sister with her crafting activities. -I have participated in many crafting activities. Not quite sure what ones but I have. -When I was in year 5 (which was about 6 years ago) as a class we made giant sculptures of people to promote recycling. It consisted of plastic bag clothing and paper mache heads and plastic bottle arms etc. Last year I was really into origami and that included stars, giant hearts, 3D hearts etc but mostly simple things. I made a mini bag out of felt material in year 9 for textiles class. In primary school, we made clay pots and A LOT of decorations out of paper. I used to make necklaces and bracelets with some string and beads when I was in primary school. I've taken art for GCSES. Q4: What is your favourite craft activity? Please specify whether you enjoy taking part or just admiring it and why. -Drawing, colouring and painting. I enjoy taking part in them because it allows me to express my emotions and thoughts on a canvas. -I'm not quite sure. That's pretty hard. I kinda don't know what i've crafted from the past as well >.< -I enjoy origami because I think when you get a good outcome, it just makes you really happy but i guess the same goes for other crafts. I also enjoy painting. Q5: Do you consider craft as a viable career option or just a hobby, why? -Hobby. I haven't done enough craft in my life to make it a career. -It can be viewed as both. People devote their lives to the art of craft. E.G. Textiles, Art, Wood Making etc. Or you could just do it to take your mind of things, enter your own little world. knit a scarf, make a pillow etc. -Both, because hobbies can turn into a career. If you're good at your hobby there shouldn't be an issue in you changing that into a career. However, I think this only goes for certain parts of crafting like jewellery making or sculpting etc. Q6: From your perspective what is cool/dope, and how would you define “cool”? -I have never put a definition to "cool" before, but now I would say it is anything that I can admire and anything that I like. -Cool is someone who's awesome. i would define cool as someone badass and just upfront, just there. I'm an anime person so you should get my point ;) -I have no idea honestly. I use the word cool for things that fascinate me or make me feel excited. I wouldn't really know how to define cool but i would think that you can use it in place of "wow" or "extraordinary". Q7: What aspects of crafting do you believe can be considered as being cool, why? -I find spray paint art verycool because you can create any type of scene on a canvas within minutes and produce beautiful pieces of art. -All aspects could be considered cool. It depends on the point of view you have. You can create a cuboid out of any material and may not think that's cool, but if you view it from that most pyramids are built from huge cuboids, you'll realise that it is kinda cool. Something so simple, so easy could create new and unique things. -The actual process of crafting is cool in my opinion. It's interesting to see the effort that the crafter puts and the attention that they put at being intricate to get a good outcome. I just think "wow" haha Q8: Do you consider taking up Art & Design, Graphics, D&T, Product Design or any other craft based course for GCSE or A levels? If you have already or are currently studying please specify which and why. If you have not studied a creative subject please also explain why. -I am doing Digital Design because I enjoy putting my creativity to use through computers - but I still enjoy crafts as a hobby. -I have taken textiles for my GCSE. I took this because it was the best subject out of the ones I could had picked, and it was actually fun and I enjoyed it alot.
  • 4. -I have studied Art & Design for GCSEs (which I completed this year, so right now I'm in year 12). I done it because all my other subjects were mostly academic and I wanted a creative subject in there and out of textiles, D&T and Art & Design, Art& Design just seemed the most desirable and interesting, plus I'm not very good with sawing and sewing XD. I didn't carry it on at ALevels because I felt that even at GCSEs it was VERY time consuming and I also felt that it wouldn't really benefit me with my possible career paths. Q9: What are or have been the crafting trends at your school/college? -None. -I'm not sure. -I'm not sure what you exactly mean but Art & Design, Textiles and D&T are very popular GCSEs in my school (well they were when I was in year 11). I think it is very beneficial to society because I feel like society is missing creativeness and colour, and I feel like people with crafting degrees can contribute to society by basically making the area appear more attractive and happy basically. I feel like people are so inclined to just getting good Academic grades (which isnt necessarily bad) that we end up missing out on the creativity that many people actually have. So I feel like someone with a crafting degree would open up pathways for many people in society because it may help them realise that you don't just have to go into an academic based degree. Q1: What is your age? 19-21:7 Participants Q2: How would you define craft in your own words? -Innovative 3D art. -A skill that is artistic in nature -Using your imagination to create things from everydays items -Something handmade- commonly artistic but not always. Something requiring skillful handiwork -Making something using your hands -To make, to develop a skill as an individual -A creative project/process Q3: Have you engaged in any craft making activities in the past and recently, please say which ones? e.g when you were in primary school. -Creating 3D house model in primary, graphics in secondary, card-making at home. -Not really -Graphic design Origami (does that count?) Scrapbooking Handmade card making -All the time- I sculpt figurines. I sew and make teddy bears. -Yes, mainly in primary and secondary school. Made a Jacob ladder, for example. -I have never, but in terms of self teaching outside school, relating to my idea of craft being a skill, i have self taught myself through tutorials, into baking (think that counts) cooking, from cupcakes to cheesecakes, to typical traditional recipes such as spaghetti and fajitas. -Yes building models, more recently sewing and kniting Q4: What is your favourite craft activity? Please specify whether you enjoy taking part or just admiring it and why. -Card-making -Recently, cakes/baking -admiring Fashion - admiring -I enjoy scrapbooking, because it's so fun to do & you get to basically be as creative as you like :)
  • 5. -Sculpting- I love sculpting because it works as a stress release. It goes further from sketching- you can sketch an idea and then bring it to life. -Admiring because lots of people undertake lots of different styles of crafts and it's fascinating -Illustrations, (if drawing counts) I take part in this as a casual blogger of sketches. I have also begun to create crochet dolls, which is extremely difficult, other than that, its the typical self taught origami. -I enjoy taking part rather than watching, and my favourite would be building something out of materials Q5: Do you consider craft as a viable career option or just a hobby, why? -N.o, just a hobby. -If you are talented and have the opportunities to do something with it, then yes - you could make a good career out of it -A viable career option. People can use social media to advertise their work & gain attention -I think it is possible to make it a very successful business however you have to be very good at what you do AS WELL AS networking, advertising etc I prefer it as a hobby. -Viable career option because I believe that your career is something you enjoy and not necessarily only being an accountant or secretary -Just a hobby, unless it manages to expand as an potential business. -Probably just as a hobby, it's quite hard to get recognised and become successful with a craft, would be easier with a conventional job Q6: From your perspective what is cool/dope, and how would you define “cool”? -Something that grabs attention and means a lot to an individual. -Interesting, trendy, awe inspiring in a way, different, chic -Cool/dope is something that can be considered awesome & current. Usually determined by society. Cool is defined as something that a lot of people like. -Something that makes me think wow. Usually it tends to be something with a lot of attitude and character or presence even if it is an object. Cool is a very broad term, anything you perceive positively can be called 'cool'. -Cool is when you look at something and are like “wow" -something to show off, key rings, little figurines, that are easily made through clay molding, and the use of an oven to harden the figure. -I believe something 'cool' is something you enjoy and take pleasure in rather than something 'popular' Q7: What aspects of crafting do you believe can be considered as being cool, why? -Creating something for someone else, creating something unique, DIY aspect. -The imagination and creativity, and the ability to create something from their imagination -The creativity because that's down to individuality which can also be cool -Being able to create something 3d- when you imagine something flat, lifeless but you can bring it into your world. To make your idea physical. Crafting allows you to create something that others have to buy or seek out. You can just...make it. -The originality in each piece because it's interesting how different people craft so differently -when it can be used in the future, like currently i'm interesting in crochet, it may seen womanly or even elderly due to it being yarn stitching, and think of granny jumpers, but i've found many bloggers whom used this skill to create popular fictional characters such as Pokemon. -The final product of the craft is probably very cool as it's seeing all the little pieces come together to make something big Q8: Do you consider taking up Art & Design, Graphics, D&T, Product Design or any other craft based course for GCSE or A levels? If you have already or are currently studying please specify which and why. If you have not studied a creative subject please also explain why. -No, never been good at it enough to consider it as something to do seriously.
  • 6. -No, didn't study it. I'm really bad at arts and crafts, and to be honest, it was not encouraged in my family. -Did consider graphics but never did it.. totally regret it. -I took Art GCSE and A levels. I took it because I was relatively good at it and I needed a subject that I could 'just do'. It needed no revision etc and I had plenty artistic ideas for my final exams. It gave me more time to revise for my remaining 3 exams. -Im not very good at artsy kind of things -Textiles (GCSE) Graphic design (A Level) Graphic and Media Design (Uni) I have an always, been slightly interested in making as their was always time and space to explore it as another subject, but before i knew it, it was a direction to go towards. -No, although i would have liked to. My parents would not have approved of an art choice Q9: What are or have been the crafting trends at your school/college? -Loom bands, scooby strings. -No -Loom bands were the craze for a while -Crafting was generally discouraged. It was kept for the students who couldn't paint or draw well. Towards the end of my final year it was being more accepted that crafting could take on the form of beautiful art and achieve high marks. -Very minimal -This is a difficult questions, because i'm sure I've never seen kids come to school with something they made, and show off about how amazing they are. if its crafting, i can only think of paper planes, always trying to make one that looks cool, and fly the longest distance. -Keyrings were a big thing in secondary and primary, and scooby doos Q10: How beneficial do you think is a crafting degree to society and your future, why? -Useful economically if done on a large scale, can be used for charity events, teach children to be creative, may have therapeutic benefits- stress relief. -I wouldn't say it is essential in the way doctors, engineers, scientist are to development of the world etc. But crafts/ are essential to enjoying life. Like doctors and scientists help to prolong life, and the creativity and beauty around is what makes life worth living. Everything has it's benefits, and has it own way of contributing to society. But on a scale of priorities, and vitalness to human life - I'm sure you can see why, a crafting degree is not that high on the list -Depends on what is to be done with the degree. Always good if its to further your career -If you are planning on working within an organisation I think it would be very beneficial. However working individually and in small scale- it is not usually needed. Crafting is (especially the artistic form) very visual- people see a wonderful craft and they want it or want to take part etc they don't stop to think oh... does this person have a degree in woodworking? It just doesn't happen. -I think it is vital to our society because we can't just all be stuck to the mainstream ideas of career paths as we all different parts of a human body that work together in order to work efficiently. -For society it is probably useful as it can be educational and therapeutic, but for my future it may not be as beneficial in financial terms Q1: What is your age? 22-24 : 6 Participants Q2: How would you define craft in your own words? -Creative pieces of art made by hand -Hands on projects. -Creativity, innovation, experimentation -Stuff that you do that is a hobby, & made by you! -Art -Making things up Q3: Have you engaged in any craft making activities in the past and recently, please say which ones? e.g when you were in primary school.
  • 7. -Yes I built a bridge and a disposable camera model when I was in high school -There were many in primary school such as paper mache, lego building and even when doing art. Where at times there was more than just painting or drawing. -in primary school i remember it was coming up to chinese new year so we had to make a dragon from coloured card -I don't remember tbh, I am the least creative person -When i'm in 6th form -Primary school, recycling bottles as flowers Q4: What is your favourite craft activity? Please specify whether you enjoy taking part or just admiring it and why. -I enjoy making origami -I'm not sure if textiles counts towards crafting but definitely textiles form secondary school for me was one of the best experiences I've had in terms of both learning and doing. -i enjoy taking part because it gives me an understanding of how things work, at the same time i also like to watch because i like to admire people's engineering skills and craftsmanship -I just like admiring it and appreciating other people's talents -My craft activity was product design, I love designing and using the 3D printer to create prototypes. -crocheting. Q5: Do you consider craft as a viable career option or just a hobby, why? -I think it would be more of a hobby, unless you were extremely talented and could open a successful business of hand-made items -I do, it definitely is a viable career as for me it goes with design, building crafting is part of the same family. Where you say put ideas into actions by actually doing or making. -Both really, start as a hobby and sell yourself to the public, show off your skills and maybe someday this hobby will become a career. Its possible -Just a hobby! Unless you are really good at it. & you see w career in it -Can be both, career option would be along the lines of becoming an inventor and anything you have passion on can be treat as a hobby. -Both, as you can earn money in some. Q6: From your perspective what is cool/dope, and how would you define “cool”? -Cool is something that fits into the trend of the current generation, it can also be expressed at something that amazes you (look that car has three wheel, that's so cool!) -I guess cool / dope at times would be something you see or enjoy but maybe cannot do? Not that its impossible to do but at the time you're unable to do or perform such a thing. For example I find scuba diving / Lion dancing a really cool fun thing. I'm unable to do it now or participate in these activities but that doesn't mean I wont be able to in the future. -amazing, out of the ordinary, sick fam, wish i could do that. -Something that is accepted with most people. Like ice creams are cool -Cool is something in fashion or for the fact that you like how it looks / feels -Something that you don't see everyday Q7: What aspects of crafting do you believe can be considered as being cool, why? -The originality, complexity and uniqueness of each piece is cool -It's most definitely the process or during the crafting. The bit where either as team working on a particular thing together or alone just minding your own business and getting the job done. -any type, im not fussy as i am in to all sorts of crafts -Knitting, and embroidery. DiY making stuff -Origami, to be able to create any object using just paper is incredible! -No idea , anything you do can be considered cool. Q8: Do you consider taking up Art & Design, Graphics, D&T, Product Design or any other craft based course for GCSE or A levels? If you have already or are currently studying please specify which and why. If you have not studied a creative subject please also explain why. -I already studied Design and Technology, because it interested me and I could express my creativity in that subject. -I would yes. Not only is it very different in terms of the learning and the actual course itself compared to your iterative English Maths and Science, it helps to express yourself in different forms.
  • 8. I did Textiles as a choice for year 10 and 11. Main reasons why would be simply because I enjoyed the aspects of it during my early years of secondary school and wanted to further pursue and see how creative I can be. -i picked art and graphics for my extra choice in gcse because art is my passion, i also chose the same for A levels too. I just really enjoyed these subjects, and people will always tell you "do something you enjoy” -For other people maybe, not so much for me -I did study "Product Design" and the reason so is because I like making things with my hands -D&T - it was a "cool" subject cutting and making things of your own to your style Q9: What are or have been the crafting trends at your school/college? -They encourage students to express their creativeness -After secondary school I haven't been involved too much around the art / craft scene if you will but I do wish I had looked or kept up with it a bit more. -its been a while i cannot remember lol -idk -Dress making -Textiles Q10: How beneficial do you think is a crafting degree to society and your future, why? -. -I think that craft is definitely underwhelmed or underrated in our world. People don't realise or see how much these smaller sectors bring to life and what exactly is the main purpose of them. For example without crafts or arts how colourless the world may be or how plain it can look with all the hidden creative minds that are not found or allowed the chance to expand and explore. You can look at it exactly the same as the left and right side of the brain. Where the left brain is the more numerical side and the right is the creative. Same with the world, the arts and craft side of everything would be our right side of the world/ brain whereas the left side would be most other things business wise or politics etc. This is not me saying business and politics are not creative or so but rather just a simple illustration on what crafting degree's can bring to our society and future. -None at all. Because you can build a portfolio based on your skills, your skills is what people are looking for, regardless of some degree, you get a degree because you've been studying in uni for a few years. Thats just a few years! When you finish uni you still have the rest of your life to do crafting (if you choose to). After getting your degree it may open doors for. But how about if you don't have a degree. Would you give up only because uni says you failed? . I happened to stumble across a fashion designer one day, with no qualifications because i was too lazy in college. Showed him my art work and he wanted me to work for him, so here i am. Fuck a degree ?? -Very beneficial. -Very beneficial as I always strive to be a DIY man, why pay someone to do a job when you can do better yourself -Might do. Q1: What is your age? 25-30 Q2: How would you define craft in your own words? Made to specification Q3: Have you engaged in any craft making activities in the past and recently, please say which ones? e.g when you were in primary school. • 9. Both, if inspiration meets physical ability you can take your hobby into a career. Motivation is the key to making that connection a reality. Q6: From your perspective what is cool/dope, and how would you define “cool”? Cool is inspirational and brings in crowds of people to participate, to aspire to become, to need the same. Q7: What aspects of crafting do you believe can be considered as being cool, why? The creative stages where the imagination takes place Q8: Do you consider taking up Art & Design, Graphics, D&T, Product Design or any other craft based course for GCSE or A levels? If you have already or are currently studying please specify which and why. If you have not studied a creative subject please also explain why. Have taken and wished I had continued to do so, it was an enjoyable part of my youth and I feel that anyone who has an ambition and passion for it should. Q9: What are or have been the crafting trends at your school/college? Not sure... Q10: How beneficial do you think is a crafting degree to society and your future, why? Q1: What is your age? 30+ Q2: How would you define craft in your own words? A job as in 'What is your craft?' Q3: Have you engaged in any craft making activities in the past and recently, please say which ones? e.g when you were in primary school. No Q4: What is your favourite craft activity? I think it is viable job for those who enjoy it. Q6: From your perspective what is cool/dope, and how would you define “cool”? But I think it is cool that other people are creative. Q8: Do you consider taking up Art & Design, Graphics, D&T, Product Design or any other craft based course for GCSE or A levels? If you have already or are currently studying please specify which and why. If you have not studied a creative subject please also explain why. It didn't interest me beyond casual appreciation so I never studied it. Q9: What are or have been the crafting trends at your school/college? I don't know. Q10: How beneficial do you think is a crafting degree to society and your future, why? I think it is beneficial because it makes up our culture. When archaeologists study old civilisations, they study the people craft as that was what was left behind. It's important we encourage craft/creative jobs so that we can express ourselves and show future generations what life is like for is. Also, it's another way to communicate with people which is important.
