On June 29 at 12pm ET, funders joined to discuss:
1. Recap conversations from our convening break-out groups
2. Forge a path for creating the ideological clarity and unity; and
3. Discuss next steps for our community.
2. Key Reflections from May 19th
Our goal was to…
»» Bring us all together for a conversation that would help all
of us in our work to increase investments to girls and young
women of color;
»» Help us all better understand what anti-black racism and
sexism is and why its important for us to have courageous
conversation in order to do meaningful work with girls and
young women in all communities of color;
»» Learn more about what you all need to feel supported in
your work to address the structural inequities facing girls
and young women of color.
5. During the G4GC convening on May 19th, we heard from many
of you on what would be helpful.
»» Need for more data and research on what is happening
to girls and young women of color and philanthropy’s
response;
»» Need for practical tools to help educate staff and board
members to develop an intersectional lens throughout your
institutions;
»» The importance of community building to do this work.
7. Foundation Center
Preliminary data from the Foundation Center
»» About 7% of all grantmaking in the U.S. goes for women
and girls. Between 7 and 10% of that number is designated
for WGOC
»» Health was the primary issue for WGOC. Education was
number 5
»» Most grants went to organizations in the Northeast, then
the South, then the West, then the Midwest
8. Foundation Center
What we still do not know
»» Disaggregated data on funding flows to specific ethnic and
racial groups
»» More nuanced analysis of explicit vs implicit funding
»» Giving of smaller and/or regional foundations
»» More recent funding trends (2014 to present)
9. Foundation Center
We heard the following about the kind of data you’re also
interested in tracking
»» Grant dollars that are place (neighborhood, region) specific
»» Data that is rooted in a racial and gender justice analysis
10. Foundation Center
Possible collaborative opportunities
»» Foundation Center tracking project capturing grants for
girls and young women of color
»» What would be most helpful? For institutional buy-in? For
strategy development?
»» How can we make it specific to place and racial/ gender
justice analysis?
»» What are your concerns?
11. Values & Guiding Principles
How can we achieve ideological unity?
