Lily
PondLily Pond
The Lily Pond was built for the 1915 Exposition to
serve as a reflecting pool and to display water lilies. During
World War I, the United States Navy, which was occupying
Balboa Park, used the pond as a swimming and rehabilitation
pool for its soldiers.A new filtration system was installed in
1994, and a renovation of the pool was completed in 1999.
Sculpture
GardenMay S. Marcy Sculpture Garden
In 1967 Mr. and Mrs. Norton Walbridge, significant donors to
the Museums’s European and American galleries, began to
collect for the Museum an important group of sculptures
that demanded exhibition spaces beyond the walls of the
building. Due in large part to the arrival of this major contri-
bution in the late 1960s, the May S. Marcy Sculpture Court
and Garden, located adjacent to the Museum, was created as
a grand outdoor exhibition space.
Organ
PavilionSpreckels Organ Pavilion
The Spreckels Organ Pavilion is the home of the
world’s largest outdoor pipe organ with over 4,500 pipes.
Constructed for the 1915 Pan American Exposition and
given to the city by John and Adolf Spreckels, the Pavilion is
located in the heart of Balboa Park and is the setting for a
wide variety of public and civic events.

Panama
FountainPlaza de Panama Fountain
Located in the center of Balboa Park, this beautiful fountain is
surrounded by colorful flowers and is a popular photo spot
for visitors from around the world.
Casa del Prado
The Casa del Prado, also
known as the Casa, and the
adjacent Casa del Prado
Theatre are historic recon-
structions of buildings from
the 1915 Pan American
Exposition.They are also the
home to a number of youth
arts organizations, the Park
and Recreation dance pro-
gram, and the San Diego
Botanical Garden Founda-
tion and library.The Casa
del Prado is a building with a
full schedule of activities and
therefore space is extremely
limited for rental
opportunities.

A vital part of the Museum’s
legacyis its setting in historic
Balboa Park.It occupies the
California Quadrangle,an
architectural complex design-
ed for the 1915 exposition by
the famous American architect
Bertram G.Goodhue to cele-
brate San Diego’s Hispanic
heritage.The California Building
(the symbol of San Diego) was
designed in the style of a
Spanish-Colonial church.With
its polychrome tile dome and
ornate tower,it was a mag-
nificent entry to the Exposition.

Old
GlobeOld Globe Theatre Complex
During the second exposition, a replica of London’s Eliza-
bethan Globe theatre was constructed for the presentation
of abbreviated Shakespearean productions. Over time, the
theater became a permanent fixture in Balboa Park, gaining
both a roof and a loyal legion of enthusiastic playgoers.The
Old GlobeTheatre Complex is comprised of the Old Globe
Theatre, the Cassius Carter Centre Stage and the Lowell
Davies Festival Stage.
Niki de Saint Phalle
The artist, Niki de Saint Phalle,
is well known for her giant
whimsical figures in bright mo-
saics. Her work is on display
throughout Europe, as part of
the Stuart Collection at the
Universityof California San
Diego, in front of the Mingei
Museum and Hall of Champi-
ons in Balboa Park, and at the
San Diego Museum of
Contemporary Art.The Niki
Museum, devoted to the
artist’s life work, opened in
1994 in Nasu, Japan.

The 23 foot tall statue
represents the hero of
Spain’s war against the
Moors, Rodrigo Diaz de
Bivar, known as El Cid.
