11. Our funding campaignโฆ
$500,000 invested by the PRSTRT in the Caribbean Center for Rising Seas .
About $3 million are needed for annual operations and supporting 12 staff members;
About $4 million are necessary for building our showcase headquarters;
About $6 million are necessary for building a program sustainability endowment;
$23k x year x coastal municipality or 53 cents per shoreline municipality inhabitant = over $1
million .
12. Why act now:
1. Flood resistant design and construction will reduce property damage and loss of life.
2. Make Puerto Rico โfuture readyโ - a model for the Caribbean and the world.
3. Flood resistant buildings and infrastructure will attract more investment.
4. People will visit Puerto Rico to see what we are doing to adapt in advance of future
flooding.
5. Create a better legacy and inheritance for future generations .
13. Summary:
The excess heat already stored in the sea, will melt the two major ice sheets
for centuries, pushing us towards the last high-water mark, 7 meters above
present;
We are implementing 4 innovative programs;
Puerto Rico is the ideal place to innovate and put forward pioneering
solutions;
A team of visionary experts leads the program;
The best time to act was decades ago. The next best time is now.

Market Opportunity/ Business Model
Over 1.9 million inhabitants live near the shoreline (almost 1.983 million live in the coastal municipalities)
About 98,000 people live in coastal areas at high risk of flooding due to storm surge.
Almost 25% of the population believe they are exposed to river-based flooding, and 19.5% have experienced this kind of flooding recently.
Close to 14% signal exposure to storm surge flooding, and 15.9% have experienced it recently.
11% are exposed to other types of coastal flooding, and 6.9% and have experienced it recently.
8.4% are vulnerable to coastal erosion, and 8% have experienced it recently.
Over 29% of the population have experienced overflowing storm sewer flooding recently.

Competitive advantage
The Caribbean Center for Rising Seas is preparing Puerto Rico and the Caribbean to adapt and thrive in the new era of increasing flood risk from storms, tides, and the long-term unstoppable threat of sea level rise. This brand-new program, launched in September 2021, of the highly regarded Puerto Rico Science, Technology, and Research Trust is establishing Puerto Ricoโs leadership and stature as a center of innovation. The Caribbean Center for Rising Seas will be a research and education instrument through which capacity, and practical solutions for the built environment might be developed, thereby facilitating and unlocking competitiveness for coastal regions in the coming decades.
