Late December of 2014, Taco Bell created a petition
to Unicode Consortium, which regulates emoji‘s to

raised awareness via Twitter using the hashtag
#TacoEmoji.

Cosmetics giant Cover Girl even took notice
and she became the honorary face of Cover
Girl, and her courage has attracted nearly
40 million viewers to her YouTube channel,

To create a buzz and help promote an upcoming
season of the show Girls, HBO created a Snapchat
to provides updates using Snapchat’s “Stories”
feature to highlight behind-the-scenes footage. The

Girls viewers on a personal level. It was an effective
cross promotion of the brand and social-media
platform. “Sending videos/photos directly to
audiences’ phones offers the best targeted

• Facebook page reconnects locals with loved ones in
Puerto Rico
Rolando Vega’s entire family lives in Puerto Rico. He spoke
with them by phone the night before Hurricane Maria made
contact on the island. “They already had an action plan, but I
don’t think they were ready for this. Like so many other
Puerto Ricans in the U.S., he became desperate to reach his
family. He and his fiancé created a Facebook page called,
Comunicacion Con Puerto Rico and less than 24 hours after
the Facebook page was created, hundreds of people began
posting. “We did a Facebook live, and we told everybody why
we did this. I said it in English and he said it in Spanish.
We’re over a thousand people now that’s joined this page so
far,” says Brassette. “They’re adding information, and every
little bit that they add to this website, it’s helping me,” says
Vega. People in the United States reached out to family
members in Puerto Rico, and through the site, they’ve
reconnected with loved ones.

• Tracy Clayton, BuzzfeedBlack
Clayton used Twitter to gain attention
after she helped to launch the hashtag
#BlackBuzzFeed, in which users
imagined what BuzzFeed would be like
if it catered to a black audience.
BuzzFeed contacted her through direct
message offering a job. She was hesitant
at first, but after BuzzFeed flew her to
New York to tour the office and she was
sold. She’s funny, brash, and honest—a
perfect fit for BuzzFeed. She’s not afraid
to innovate and to do things differently.

how Kathryn Deprill AKA Burger King Baby found her
biological mother on Facebook. On March 2nd, 2014
Kathryn Deprill went to Facebook and made a plea for her
Friends on Facebook to help her find her biological mother.
Her plea was shared more than 33,000 times and one of the
people that saw the plea was her biological mother, Cathy
Pochek, who contacted her attorney to arrange a reunion at
her office.

event though you're in jail. Jeremy Meeks
was arrested in 2002 and was charges with

Beatles” where people would

NFL anthem protests are not only taking a hit on the league's
broadcasters, but they are also affecting DirecTV as well. The Wall
Street Journal reported that the service provider, which offers the
popular Sunday Ticket, "is letting at least some customers cancel
subscriptions to its Sunday Ticket package of NFL games and obtain
refunds if they cite players’ national anthem protests as the reason,
customer service representatives said Tuesday."
Through the use of social media, people are expressing their views
whether it be displeasure or happiness (lack of a better word) with the
awareness it is brings to the issue. It plays a part on how people react

• Gilbert Gottfried Insensitive Tweets
Comedian Gilbert Gottfried, voice of the
Alfac Duck for a decade, made some jokes
over twitter about the Japanese Tsunami.
One tweet was, “Japan is really advanced.
They don’t go to the beach. The beach
comes to them.” Of course, Alfac, which is
the largest insurance company in Japan,
did not take it lightly, ended up firing
Gottfried.

• Carly Mckinny, #FreeCrunkBear
A Colorado high school math teacher,
Carly Mckinny, became an instant star
after her twitter account, which she
says she operates with a friend, was
discovered by a local TV station. The
account features the teacher in racy

pics. While many students created
online community with the hashtag
#FreeCrunkBear, she was ultimately
placed on administrative leave, then
fired shortly after.

A twitter campaign by McDonald's
backfired when people started

#McDStories. McDonald’s campaign
started with the hashtag

produce. Later in the day, however,
the burger company used a
dangerously vague hashtag:
#McDStories, which people took this
hashtag and started talking trash.

that people can bully without any consequences.
For example, Amanda Todd killed herself due to
constant cyberbullying on her Facebook page.
She made a video asking for help but no one took
her seriously. She sent pics to an unknown user
and then that person posted it on Facebook. Due
to this she had to change schools several times
and when that didn’t work, she took her own life.
This is an example that people on social media
can be ruthless and unforgiving.

your political career. For example,
Anthony Weiner was a member of
the House of Representatives from
New York City. Anthony Weiner
political career was put in halt
when he used twitter to send a link
of a sexually suggestive image of
himself for a 21 year old girl. He
was married at the time, and he
later resigned his position.

• Social Media can really put
countries on edge. Donald Trump
has been a very controversial
president during his term and he
only been in office for 256 days.
Tensions has always been high with
North Korea and Donald Trump
tweets has put the country on edge.
People fear being in a nuclear war
if Trump keep pushing North Korea
with his tweets. His tweets could
ripple tensions with North Korea
and cause major problems.

In the summer of 2017, Blac Chyna and
Rob Kardashian broke up and argued on
social media. Rob tweeted out nude
pictures of Blac Chyna and due to that the
whole world saw their relationship
crumble. It was very embarrassing and led
to Chyna filing a restraining order on Rob
and they have a kid together.

• 13 reasons why was a Netflix
special that was popularized by
twitter. Thanks to social media,
the show was a major hit. It’s
story about a girl leaving tapes
for people who were the reason
why she killed herself took off
and hashtags. It has a major
influence to the point where a fan

took her own life.
