The document discusses how the thriller film "The Inner Fall" draws inspiration from and pays homage to other thriller films while also establishing its own identity. It establishes shots and credits in a similar way to "The Shinning" by emphasizing the director. It uses long establishing shots like nature documentaries but also incorporates close-ups. Character introductions mirror "The Maze Runner" through close-ups highlighting fear and disorientation. Shots of the protagonist walking through confusing settings reference "The Maze Runner" while being adapted to their lower budget. Flashbacks are used like in the game "Uncharted" and close-ups of the protagonist's face show memories and emotions as seen in "Oldboy".
2. ï One of the most obvious
ways in which our thriller
challenges conventions of
real media products is by
putting the name of the
director or producer in the
opening credits
This is the titles from the film âThe
Shinningâ. Films tend to display
the names that will pioneer their
film. We felt that the actors in our
thriller will not be well-known,
since two of the main characters
are teenagers, therefore we
chose to emphasize the name of
the Director. Just like the opening
titles of âThe Shinningâ
3. On the right we see a long still shot from
BBC documentary on the theme of
nature, more specifically rain forest. It
could be argued that our establishing
shots are similar in a sense that they
show isolated environment in this case -
forest, a stream, surrounded by trees.
Also both shots are long and still.
However, for one of our establishing
shots we used a close up and we differed
the focus, so when it came to placing our
credits in the editing suite we could shift
the titles as the focus pulls from one
object to another.
4. This is a medium close-up shot
of the protagonist (Thomas,
Dylan O,Brien)in the film âThe
Maze Runnerâ when he wakes
up in the lift in the beginning of
the film and the only thing he
can remember is his name.
The close-up is used to
highlight the sense of fear
mixed with disorientation,
caused by the surroundings it is
easily recognized s on the
actorâs facial expression.
Similarly, in our thriller âThe inner
fallâ, the protagonist â David, is a
teenager. After he wakes up in a
place that can be described as a
labyrinth, he realizes that he is
alone in this isolated area. We
used similar camera shot to the
one above in âThe maze runnerâ
which shows our actorâs
emotions depicted on his face
soon after he woke up.
5. The inner fall
We see âThe inner fallâ use the
conventions of a similar thriller
film with the American Made
âThe maze runnerâ where the
protagonists are seemingly
âtrappedâ. These long shots used
allow the audience to see
beyond the characters
perspective, as they gradually
realize that there are being
âcaughtâ in this place and escape
seems almost impossible.
However, these shots are not
identical, because we used high-
angle camera shot, to
emphasize the weakness of our
character and create a sense of
isolation in the frame
6. Here, we see two near identical
very long shots, above â The
maze runner, where two of the
fellows ârunnersâ explore the
complexity of the maze. In our
thriller, we couldnât afford the use
of CGI and special effects as in
high-budget American film like
âThe maze runnerâ, but I think
that we successfully used the
many frames of Chilworth
Gunpowder factory to create the
sense of âendlessâ labyrinth.
The maze runner
The inner fall
This is a long shot of our main
character David walking through
different âroomsâ until he gradually
realizes that there is no escape.
7. Another example of similar shot from âThe maze runnerâ
to our thriller is when Thomas walks through this new
place soon after heâs arrived there. The camera is
following him from behind. In our thriller we used a hand-
held shot which the camera operator holds the camera
during motion to create a jerky, immediate feel.
8. ï Uncharted: Golden Abyss is
an action-adventure platform video
game, the fourth entry in
the Uncharted series. It is the first
portable entry in the series,
released for the PlayStation Vita. It
was developed by SCE Bend
Studio, with development overseen
by Naughty Dog. The game was
released as a launch title in Japan
on December 17, 2011. The story
is set some time before the events
of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, and
begins in medias res with Nathan
Drake following rival explorer
Jason Dante through a temple
complex in Panama.
Our thriller uses the
convention of the game
Uncharted which begins in a
medias res and uses
flashbacks.
9. Oldboy is a 2003 South
Korean mystery thriller neo-noir
film directed by Park Chan-wook. The
film follows the story of Oh Dae-su,
who is locked in a hotel room for 15
years without knowing the identity of
his captor or his captor's motives.
When he is finally released, Dae-su
finds himself still trapped in a web of
conspiracy and violence.
This close-up of his face is used to
show his emotions just before the
flashback reflected in his memories.
Similarly, we used a close-up of Davidâs
face, right before the end, when he
remembers moments of the walk with
his father and sister in the woods, when
they find the box. We used deliberately
reaction shot. This type of shot
underscores key moments within the
scene. At their most extreme, reaction
shots can function as an exclamation
mark; however, for the most part
they enable the audience to work out
what the character is thinking. This is
very important since in a film we do not
have easy access to a person's
thoughts.
