Research into My Future Options
After I have finished studying Media at Sunderland College, after I have completed this
course I plan to move up into higher education to broaden my skills and experience within
the film and media industry. I have chosen this as I believe it will help me within my future
career within the industry and I have never felt that apprenticeships would be the right
route for me personally. I am planning on going to university to study Film Production and
after looking into many different universities and their courses I have decided that I would
like to study at Sunderland University to study their Film Production course. As studying
media was new to me when coming into college I have found a passion for both the media
industry and the practical side of media, although the theory side does interest me I am
more interested with getting professional hands on experience with various pieces of
equipment. At first I didn’t plan on studying at university and wanted an apprenticeship but
after further research into universities it showed me that I can enhance and learn new skills
in university while still getting that hands on experience that I was looking for.
When looking into jobs in the industry, I looked into both apprenticeships and jobs. I first
looked at big steaming services websites such as the BBC, Channel 4 and ITV which had all
their apprenticeship applications live for this year. Although I am unsure what job role I
would like to pursue between cinematographer or director I decided to look for general jobs
within the media industry. In a search for the jobs, I looked at both BBC, ITV, and Channel 4s
‘career’ section on their website where they will post if a current job is vacant. However, I
also found some media jobs advertised on a employer app ‘Indeed’ which is an app that
allows employers to find potential new employees. From this job search I found that there
aren’t many media jobs within the North-East and are more aimed towards the south of
England. By researching into the jobs it allowed me to change from wanting an
apprenticeship as there isn’t many available within the North-East. Throughout looking into
the jobs one thing that is crucial to look into is the experience and skills that are needed to
be best suited for the job, and if you were to get that role you also need to read what you
key responsibilities would be when taking that certain role. By doing this, it has allowed me
to see what standards need to be met with large media companies and what they expect
from candidates. Although I plan on studying at university, the job search helped me to see
some potential employers after I have finished my education.
Higher Education
Looking at applying to university I preferably wanted to stay near home which was a key
factor when I was looking into universities. The Universities I have chosen to apply to is
Manchester, Sunderland, Teesside and Northumbria, this is due to the majority of my
options are close to home and are only a short drive or bus journey away. Also when looking
at the courses that they offer I believe that they are best fitted towards what career path I
want to go down. One of the first universities that I applied for was Sunderland University to
study: Film Production with a foundation year. With the Film Production course it does
involve theory work, however it is a very hands on course with students taking part in and
2. learning documentary production, scriptwriting, cinematography, directing and filmmaking.
The hands-on experience was important when looking
into courses too as that I was most interested in. As this
course starts at a foundation year only 40 UCAS Terrif
points are required to get into this specific course. I
chose to study a foundation year as it allows me to build
not only study skills but allows me to gain further
knowledge of my course before I fully go into my degree.
I also looked at courses at Manchester, Northumbria,
Teesside and applied for a film and media course at Sunderland. The courses that I applied
for were:
Film and Television Production with Foundation Year- Teesside University
Film and TV Production- Northumbria University, Newcastle
Film and Media Studies (Foundation Year)- Manchester Metropolitan University
Film and Media with Integrated Foundation Year- Sunderland University
Film Production with Integrated Foundation Year- Sunderland University
However after fully looking into the course I believed that they weren’t the right course for
what I wanted to do in the future, also when looking at the entry requirements for each
university as most of them were foundation years so the entry requirements were low they
were between 40-82 UCAS terrif points as most people who apply for a foundation year
don’t have the grades to go straight into the degree. I made my UCAS application through
the UCAS website where I was able to upload my personal statement and look into different
universities and their courses. Once my application was accepted by people at the college, it
was then sent to all of my university choices. After 2 weeks I had received conditional offers
from all of my universities, for the majority of these I have to achieve 40- 80 UCAS points,
however for Northumbria University I have to achieve 120 UCAS points. Although if I do not
achieve the 120 UCAS points and alternatively achieve 80 UCAS points I have a guaranteed
place in their Film, Media, Theatre and Performance Foundation year course.
When looking into different universities what I also found useful was the assessment
criteria, modules and entry requirements were all on UCAS or the universities personal
websites. By looking at the universities specific websites it showed me what modules we
would be completing along the 4 years that I will be studying at the university.
Mock Interview
Looking back on my mock interview I believe that there Is many thing I could have improved
on. One thing I could have improved on was have I presented myself and how I spoke, when
I get nervous I seem to say ‘like’ and ‘erm’ a lot as I try to think of what I have to say next.
One thing that was making me nervous was I was presenting an idea to David Longworth
from the BBC and as this was my first interaction with an industry professional one to one I
stumbled on my words a lot. As I I have established a habit that I will try to stop as in a real
interview the employer would see this as unprofessional and may think that I was
unprepared for the interview. Before the interview I looked into other mock interviews to
3. see what sort of questions they may ask and how I could approach them if I had similar
questions. When presenting my pitch I tried to focus on David’s feedback and see what I
could have included/ improved within my pitch, as well as improvements I was also given
feedback on what he thought was good about my work. A few weeks before the interview I
was given a brief about a BBC pitch idea where we had to create our own TV show idea to
present to David, overall I was happy with my idea in which I turned a book into a series and
explained what channel, what time and how much my show would cost. By completin this
interview this has allowed me to gain more confidence when speaking to new people and
when I present my work to people I don’t know. Below is my mock interview link.

Creating My Brand Identity
In any industry creating your own brand identity is important to
allow people to gain a better understanding of who you are and
what your business has to offer. Overall, after looking at my work, I
am happy with the outcome, I started to develop my brand identity
by creating a personal statement, this allows universities to gain a
better understanding of who you are as a person. A personal
statement is crucial to have when applying to university as without
out one you can’t get into university. As before college I had never
created or heard of a personal statement, the first thing I did was
look into previous personal statements too see how they were
structured. We also had guidance from our lectures with a
structured template with questions that have helped with creating
the best personal statement possible. I created multiple drafts of
my personal statement after getting feedback from my lecturer on how to improve and
what I should include and take out. After creating 3 drafts of my personal statement, I was
happy with the final outcome and added it to my UCAS application, a personal statement
has to be 4000 characters and 47 lines, I struggled with narrowing my personal statement
down to these specific guidelines.
CV
The next part of creating my brand identity was developing my CV, this is crucial to have as
it allows employers to gain a better understanding of who you are and what you would
bring to the specific role that you are applying for. A CV is a curriculum vitae and is a short-
written summary of someone's career, education, and qualifications. CVs are most used
when applying for jobs and in some cases used for apprenticeships. This allows employers to
see why you are the right person for the job and allows them to gain a first impression on
the candidate.
4. Before creating my CV for the media industry, I had already previously had one for when I
was applying for my current part time job where you can see all of my skill sets and different
experiences. However, I had started my CDF placement in October 2022, which means I
could add more to my current CV that is relevant to my future career. By adding work
placement at Meash Media to my CV it allowed me to further my skills and experience in
the industry and gain professional experience, which will make my CV seem advanced in the
media industry. When making my CV I looked into other media related CVs to gain a better
understanding on how it would be structured. In my first draft it wasn’t a structured CV and
was just placed in a word document which look unprofessional. When looking at other
people’s CV I decided to use a website that has templates for CVs. By using this I believe that
my CV looks more professional that what it did previously. I believe that by updating my CV I
can now use it for potential future jobs and can further add to it when I finish my education
at university.
Logo
After I had finished with the university side of the project, I then
moved on to creating my business logo. A logo is a symbol, or a
smaller design adapted by a business to identify its products that
they create. Most of the most popular logos have little to no text
and are very simple designs. Companies to do that to not
overwhelm their audience with too much information. Specific
colours are also used to draw the audience in which is where my
research into existing logos came into hand. When looking into
specific logos I went for popular mainstream logos that are well
known globally, when looking into the logos I explained the colour
theory behind the colours used, the business themselves and how
they used it to build up their brand. As I looked into different ideas my final idea changed
overall, when thinking about my logo i always wanted to base it around my dog Poppy.
However, with this logo it doesn’t give my audience the idea of what my company is about.
To me it was important that my brand was also named after my dog as that was part of my
brand identity before it was even created. In my first 2 drafts I struggled to find how to
incorporate both n element of media and to include the dog logo that I was focused on.
However, I decided to place a media related icon, in this case it was a film clapper, in a circle
which had dog paws on the side of it which I has happy with as it matched what I was
imagining In my initial idea. Looking into colour theory really helped me pick out the colour
as I wanted a bright and vibrant colour that caught my audiences attention. Pink represents:
sweetness, warmth, love and softness. After I was fully happy with how my logo looked, I
then moved on to create my business card
Business Card
Before starting my business card I looked into existing business cards to see what the key
features are and how other businesses use them to their advantage. A business card is a
way for a business owner to showcase their company and is usually how a customer gains
their first impression of a company. When looking into different business cards, there are
Poppy
Productions
5. specific elements that stayed the same throughout all of them, which have allowed them to
look professional and keep their business successful. Throughout my research into looking
into existing business cards, most products have their logo in the centre of their card on one
side and on the other all personal details such as:
• Contact details
• Business information
• Digital profile account names
Before creating my own as said previously I researched into different business cards
to see what colours they used to draw In their audience and
what they included within their card. After looking at those cards
I created 3 drafts and created my final draft which is the image
seen on the left. Like my logo I used the pink colour as it
represents: warmth, love, softness and sweetness, which may
make new client feel less intimated to get in contact. I also put
my text and information on a black and white background as
everything stands out on both the light and dark background.
Just like the logo I wanted to incorporate something dog related
as well as letting my audience know that it was related to media. When creating my
final product I gained feedback of peers to see what I could improve on and what
they liked about my card. The responses I gained from this were:
What people liked were:
Colour scheme
The logo
Looks professional
Colours
What I could improve on:
Nothing
Text size
Text placement
Nothing
By gaining this feedback off my peers I was then happy with my final product, by
having my now finished business card this will allow me in the future to give to any
new or frequent client to help get a larger name for my business as some people
may prefer to have a physical copy of the details rather than search on the internet
for them.
Showreel
My next step in creating my brand identity was creating my showreel, a showreel is short
video that showcases a person’s best and previous work that they may want to show to new
6. clients. Before I started to create my own showreel I looked into 2 showreels, one consisted
of a students work and was showcasing her best work she had done, another was a
cinematographers best work. By analysing this it allowed me to see how a showreel should
be structured, how long it should be and what it should consist of. As this was my first time
creating a showreel, when creating my first draft, I wanted to see what order I needed to
put my footage in to get a better understanding on how I wanted my showreel to flow. I
edited my first draft on CapCut which I soon realised was a mistake and on my final 2 drafts I
edited them on premier pro as that was more professional and beneficial for my
documentary. By editing on premier pro it also allowed me to broaden my skills on the
software. When creating my second draft I wanted to get other peoples opinions on my work and
how I can improve it for my final draft for it to be the best product that I can make. For my survey I
asked the questions:
What did you like about my showreel?
• The variety of images
• Clips match the beat of the song
• Kept my attention with the images and videos
• Music is very upbeat
What can I improve on?
• The black lines
• Proportions of the images
• Make the video longer
• Reduce the black lines
When creating my final draft I took all of my feedback into consideration, I edited my final
draft once again on premier pro to keep the same professional standard. Overall I am happy
with my showreel design as it shows my best work and show the improvement and skills
that I have gained throughout my 2 years on my course. My show reel includes the smile
campaign, my trip to Scotland, the Antarctic Monkeys concert and other personal projects/
images that I have done. At the end I included a screen that says to be continued, as in April
I am attending and filming a gig for the promotion of a solo artist.

7. Create Britain
Create Britain is a website that is similar to LinkedIn that
focuses on sharing peoples work who are within some form
of creative industry. This allows other people within the
industry to see their work and make contact with them if
they think that you are fit for the product that they are
needing. When creating a Create Britain profile you are
able to add your own profile picture, banner image or video
message and add additional information about what you
do in the industry and about yourself as a person. After
creating my Create Britain profile I wanted to add my best
work that I am most proud of and shows my growth from
when I first started. I first used Create Britain in the
industry when looking for my CDF work placement in
college, where the employer had asked to see some of our
work, I then updated my profile to allow them to see my
best work. By having this website it may allow employers to see me as more professional as
I have my own page on a website that anyone can easily access and see other people within
the media and help support other people within the industry. One key thing I like about
Create Britain is that it is a dedicated website to people within the industry which makes
making connections easy and employers can easily see where you are based (if your location
was added to your profile personally) and key what your key skills are. You can also add your
social media links or other website link, I decided to link my blogger as that is where the
majority of my media work is stored. As this website was created in my first year at college,
one way that it has developed was I added more recent work onto it as no content had been
added previously. This website will also help me when going into employment and
throughout university as I can add my university work on there which shows more diverse
content on my profile and shows the growth from college to university.
Networking
Over the past 2 years of studying at college I have had many opportunities to meet many
professionals within the media industry. Just to name a few they range from David Putnam
who was the director of Chariots of Fire and was a member of the house of lords, Leo
Pearlman who is the owner of Fulwel 73 who directed Sunderland Til I Die, James Corden
Carpool Karaoke to Meash Media where I did my work placement.
In October 2022 we were given the opportunity to listen to a talk at The Sunderland
University by Leo Pearlman, who as said previously is one of the owners of Fulwel 73 who
runs the company alongside Ben Turner, Ben Winston and Gabe Turner. In this talk he
discussed his past and upcoming projects that he has created such as Sunderland Til I Die
which has allowed many people all over the country to see not only the football club but the
city itself. He then included that the series would have one more season which had not been
released to the public yet. In this talk he also spoke about the future investments that are
8. going into making a Fulwel 73 office in Sunderland and how it will create more opportunities
for the students like myself.
In October 2022 we had the opportunity to attend a talk which would be attended by David
Puttnum who directed Chariots of fire. From this experience I learned many things about
the film industry along with statistics to show how the film and media industry have
changed over the years.I would say that this experience helped me gain more knowledge
about specific sectors such as the gaming industry played a large sector in making the
mandolorian as gaming technology was used to create it. It was inspiring to see David
Puttnum talk about his passion for the industry and how he has seen it change as a director
throughout the years. At Sunderland University there is a specific building named after him
called ‘The Sir David Puttnam Library’
Also in October 2022 the media company ‘Meash Media’ visited college to talk to us about
their company as part of work experience. After hearing their talk I was eager to get
involved with Craig and Victoria and wanted to complete my CDF work placement there. To
do this I added some of my work onto my create Britain profile and sent it to them so they
could get a look at some of the work I had done over the last 2 years. I have now been doing
my work placement with Meash Media since October some of the projects I have been
involved in include: Sunderland Empire Aladdin promotions, Pizza Uno promotions and
Supreme Exterior Clean.
Aladdin
When shooting for the Sunderland Empire we were able to get involved by taking pictures
of the actors and shadow different parts of the shoot day such as the green screen room
where the advertisements were being shot, to the main room where pictures were being
taken to go on benches and around Sunderland. They also filmed videos for their own
personal accounts and make TikTok videos whilst in costume
Pizza Uno
For Pizza Uno we were heavily involved with the camera work for the promotional videos
and images that they would be using for their next social media posts. In this project I was
able to use a camera gimble which was something I had never done before which then
added to the hands on professional experience that I was gaining. We then sat and edited
the footage together and came up with a few drafts and sent them to the owner to see if
anything needed changing. Any advert that was being used was edited on premier pro for
the best outcome for the client, as Pizza Uno regularly run competitions on their social
media.
Supreme Exterior Clean
For this specific shoot I shadowed a days filming for some training videos for a cleaning
company. They were originally based in just Newcastle but they now travel all around the
North East, they mainly focus on cleaning roofs to a high standard but do offer other
services. The videos consisted of members of staff introducing themselves, saying their job
9. role and then explaining how they perform every clean. For this day I listened to the sound
to make sure all actors could be heard without any cracks or pops present.
Conclusion
Overall, in this unit I believe that I have gained confidence in both my research and
presenting skills after having to present a pitch idea to a media professional and showing my
peers my work and gaining feedback from that. Although this unit has been difficult as I
enjoy the more hands on work rather than the research element of the unit, however as I
am a creative person I thrived in creating my own logo and business card as it allowed me to
create an idea and I could see a physical version of the final product. As having to balance
both college and work I believe I have managed to keep my work at a high standard after
having to catch up from home to ensure that I don’t fall behind, at first balancing both was a
challenge, but I soon found a way that I can balance both without effecting one another. I
believe that overall my work within this unit is up to a high standard, after dealing with
timing issues and technical issues I ensured that my work still looked professional and met
the given criteria.
