2. WELCOME TO SHEPPARD PILING
Sheppard Piling is a specialist piling contactor installing cost effective piled
solutions throughout London and the south east. Operating from it base in
Fetcham, Surrey Sheppard Piling is able to service the M25 and surrounding
counties efficiently but has completed many projects further afield in the
midlands and down in to Dorset and as far as Devon.
Sheppard pilings core business lies in the installation of Continuous Flight
Auger Piles (CFA Piling) having invested heavily in a modern comprehensive
fleet as part of its expansion program with many of its machines less than 2
years old accompanied by state-of-the-art concrete monitoring systems.
Sheppard Piling also caters for restricted access, low headroom sites that
require mini piling. Our mini rigs can work in as little as 2.0m of headroom
and fit through a standard door way. We have a variety of systems and
diameters to cater for different ground conditions / structural loads and site
constraints.
We believe that our service level at planning / pre-construction is unique
and sets us apart from other organisations who do not invest the time with
their clients to value engineer projects. It is this strive to make savings on
cost and construction programs which has forged solid relationships with
key clients that we have been fortunate to work with on many projects.

4. BORED PILED RETAINING WALLS
CONTIGUOUS PILED WALL
Contiguous piled retaining walls are formed using either
Rotary or CFA piling technics, piles are installed at close
centres, with typically 100-200mm gaps between piles.
These piles form temporary or permanent support to
excavations. This techniques is suitable for basements,
underground structures and motorway cuttings where
working space is limited or adjacent to existing
structures.

5. BORED PILED RETAINING WALLS
SECANT PILED WALL
Secant piled retaining walls are formed using either Rotary
or CFA piling technics, unreinforced female piles are
installed at close centres using a slow-gain (soft) concrete
mix, after a sufficient curing period and once each alternate
pile has been installed, the reinforced male piles are
installed using a standard concrete mix. The overlap for a
typical secant section is approximately 75 – 100mm which
ensures that water ingress is minimised and fines wash-out
is prevented. The interlocking secant wall is not watertight;
however water flow is greatly reduced. These piles form
temporary or permanent support to excavations. This
techniques is suitable for basements, underground
structures and motorway cuttings where working space is
limited or adjacent to existing structures.

6. CFA BORED PILING
Continuous Flight Auger Bored Piles are constructed
with string of hollow stemmed augers, once the
design depth has been reached concrete is pumped
through the centre of the augers to base of the pile,
the augers are then extracted whilst the concreting
continues to ground level, reinforcement is
introduced completing the pile. During the
extraction process the pile formation is monitored
by an on-board computer system to ensure that that
the pile is constructed correctly.

7. RESTRICTED ACCESS MINI PILING
Our rigs can work in a confined space of approximately 2.0m
headroom and 750mm access point. This is particularly
useful for basement projects in land-locked areas such as
London, residential extensions where access for the larger
rigs might be an issue or poor ground conditions. The three
main techniques of mini piling that we use are as follows:
SECTIONAL FLIGHT AUGER BORED PILES – OPEN AUGER
BORE
Open auger bored piles are constructed with sectional solid
stemmed augers, once the design depth has been reached
the augers are removed from the bore and the pile
reinforcement is placed ready for concreting, once concrete
has been introduced the pile is completed. This method of
piling requires bores to remain dry and stable for concreting.

8. RESTRICTED ACCESS MINI
PILING
SECTIONAL FLIGHT AUGER BORED PILES – HOLLOW STEM
BORE
Hollow stem bored piles are constructed with sectional
hollow stemmed augers, once the design depth has been
reached grout is pumped through the centre of the augers to
base of the pile, the augers are then extracted whilst the
grouting continues to ground level, reinforcement is
introduced completing the pile. This method of piling
alleviates any issues with unstable bores and water strikes as
the bore is permanent supported by the augers throughout
construction.
8
9. ROTARY AUGER BORED PILING
Rotary Auger Bored Piling are constructed with a short
solid stemmed auger attached to a telescopic Kelly bar,
once the design depth has been reached the Kelly bar /
auger is removed from the bore and the pile
reinforcement is placed ready for concreting, once
concrete has been introduced the pile is completed.
Where unstable ground or ground water is encountered
this piling system can install temporary / permanent
lining tubes to allow sufficient support for the pile bore
during the concreting process.
