I presented this to students in a Nonprofit Operations course at UCLA. Through analysis of a series of case studies, we explored how organizations are leveraging the power of new technologies to raise awareness and money -- and better handle crises.
3. Three takeaways from this presentation Democratization of resources = new rules Go to the power Be a long-term investor
4. Democratization of resources =new rules People don’t need infrastructure to organize. Do they need you? Flickr user David Boyle
5. 2. Go to the power “The people who are going to use it are already using the Web in other ways and those are the people who will be most successful with the tools. We tried to target those people where they are already.” Melissa Temme, The Salvation Army

8. Traffic to UCLA.edu is trending down. The homepage is now a less effective marketing tool.
9. “there are no pics on their facebook page” … the hotel has 100+ photos on their website, but without a Facebook presence, the hotel missed an opportunity.
Harrison launched the organization on his 31st birthday by asking friends to donate $31 instead of giving him a gift. It was a success--the birthday generated $15,000 and helped build Charity: Water's first few wells in Uganda. In the three years that followed, Harrison's simple birthday wish snowballed into donations that today total more than $20 million, translating into almost 3,000 water projects spanning everything from hand-dug wells and deep wells to protection for springs to rainwater harvesting. The organization has now provided clean water to more than 1.4 million people spanning 17 countries.
