BDO is unlike other accounting organisations.We are different because we have a natural affinity

BDO in SouthAfrica is the SouthAfrican member firm of the BDO International network.A world-
wide network of public accounting firms, called BDO Member Firms, serving international clients.
The global BDO network provides audit, tax and advisory services in 152 countries, with over
59,000 people working from over 1,328 offices worldwide. Locally, we have some 750 staff across
our five offices around the country, namely in CapeTown (Woodstock andTygerValley), Pretoria,
Johannesburg and Durban.
We aim to be the Leader in Exceptional Client Service in our industry because giving clients
the results they require is on the agenda first and foremost in our minds.As a leading mid-size
professional services firm, we are capable of competing with the larger firms but are still small
enough to care.We are agile, innovative and dynamic, thereby allowing us to adapt to our clients’
particular needs.

OUR STAFF
In SouthAfrica, our staff complement is approximately 750.The regional breakdown is roughly:
Durban – 70; Johannesburg – 450; CapeTown – 150; Pretoria – 110.
OURCULTURE
The BDO culture is something quite tangible – you’ll feel it the moment you walk through the door
and are warmly greeted by one of our receptionists.This applies to all our offices, whether you visit
CapeTown, London or Nairobi.
Comments such as ‘people greet me when they see me’ and ‘people care about me’ to ‘we have fun
at work’ all demonstrate that at BDO we have a culture of working hard, but also of taking time to
get to know our colleagues, many of whom become friends.
Many of our partners have come through the ranks, having completed their articles at BDO.You’ll
find a supporting working environment, an open door policy, opportunities to become involved in
a range of extra activities – from Sports and Social events and community involvement and events
that support and promote the BDOValues.
OUR HISTORY
BDO in SouthAfrica has its roots in Spencer Shaw Hood, a firm which opened its doors in 1938.The
BDO network was formed in 1963 and Spencer Steward, as the firm was then known, joined the
BDO network in 1980. In 2009, a decision was taken globally to drop the local member firm names
and every Member Firm is now known simply as ‘BDO’ in their local market.
TRANSFORMATIONAND DIVERSITY
BDO embraces the need for transformation and diversity, both within our company and the
accounting profession sector.To this end, we have established aTransformation Committee to
oversee and drive the steps needed to ensure that all staff have access to equal opportunities.The
Committee’s key focus areas are the increased recruitment ofAfrican, Indian, Coloured and Female
staff; and a focus on succession planning to redress the employment profile at senior levels within
the organisation.
The head of theTransformation Committee is Patricia Stock. Other committee members represent
each BDO SouthAfrica office, and different disciplines within the business.

ALUMNI
OurAlumni are an important source of referral work for us and so we keep in touch with them
throughout the year through theAlumni group and other newsletters.We also host an annual
function at each of our offices to bring them back to the BDO family for a catch-up.

Mergers with CAP Chartered Accountants and RWI Business Services took place in the
last six months of 2014, bringing a further +/-100 staff members into BDO South Africa
family.
In 2014, BDO Member Firms were added in Sierra Leone and Mauritius, and in 2015
Honduras and the Palestinian territories joined the network.

A changing world requires a new approach to service:

We provide public accounting, tax and advisory services in more than 150 countries
worldwide.
We are the global leader of the mid-tier of our profession in terms of size, reach and
revenue – which reached US$7,02bn in 2014.

•	 The large firm accounting market has been consolidating for some years, driven by the
requirements of large global clients.This is now repeating itself in the mid-tier of our profession
as smaller networks and firms struggle to meet the increasingly international needs of clients
as they pursue growth markets.
•	 To best serve these clients, BDO has invested in establishing a truly global footprint and in
building a globally mandated audit tool and state of the art technical infrastructure.We have
also created a single, cohesive brand symbolic of our position as a leader among leaders.

BDO INTHE MEDIA
We work hard to position BDO with its target audiences, using the media as one of our
communication channels. Ogilvy Public Relations is our external public relations firm and, together
with our various service lines, we generate a constant flow of articles and opinion pieces for the likes
of Business Day, BusinessTimes, Financial Mail, Finweek, Business Report and other national and
regional business publications.We also endeavour to position our people through business radio and
television programmes.

SOCIAL MEDIA
BDO SouthAfrica is active on social media, which we use as an additional channel to share our
insights and thoughts with our various target audiences.We have a company and graduates page

Staff’s use of social media in their personal capacity is governed by the BDO Social Media Policy
(available from HR), which aims to protect the BDO brand at all times.

Ambition This is our firm’s mission and vision.
APT Audit Process Tool. This is the methodology and
process that all BDO member firms use when
conducting an audit.
Associate Director The holder of this job title does not hold the same
rights and responsibilities as a company director *.
BDO network This makes reference to the BDO Network, which
comprises all the member firms of BDO
International.
BDO Pulse The name of our monthly client newsletter.
BS&A Business Services & Advisory.
Connect This refers to our global company intranet
Core support services Our description for the internal support services
within BDO: HR, Marketing, Business Develop-
ment, Finance, Admin, IT and Risk.
CRM Customer Relationship Management: This is the IT
platform we use to record and manage all our in-
teractions with our clients. It is also used to record
new business leads/potential clients.
CSR Corporate Social Responsibility (sometimes
referred to Corporate Social Investment or CSI).
This is the work we do to support vulnerable com-
munities within our respective regions. See also

CVI Corporate Visual Identity. This is the manual that
guards the BDO brand and its use by member firms
to ensure that the brand is portrayed correctly in
all markets. Correct use of the CVI ensures a strong
and recognisable brand.
Director * Refers to a director of one of our Advisory service
line companies. The designation comes with cer-
tain responsibilities, as governed by the Companies
Act 2008.
Evolution The name of our CSR committee.

Exceptional Client Service The programme that we run within the business
focusing on educating and upskilling staff so as to
provide the best service to our clients in all we do.
This programme will help us achieve our ambition.
Insights This refers to information we develop as a com-
pany such as reports or bulletins.
KAM Key Account Management. This is the programme
we have in place to ensure that we look after our
top clients to the very best of our abilities, making
them feel special and valued to BDO.
Leader for Exceptional Client Service This is the term we use to describe our ambition as
a company. It is also our brand promise.
Managing Partner The head of each of our offices.
Mid-size This describes the size of our organisation. We are
not as large as the Big 4 audit firms but still have
a significant presence (nationally and internation-
ally) which differentiates us from smaller audit and
advisory firms.
Partner Refers to a shareholder of BDO South Africa Inc,
the Audit practice in South Africa.
Publications This refers to the brochures and newsletters we
produce.
Professional services firm This is the term used to describe our type of organi-
sation. An organisation that requires professional
licences to operate or provide our service. In our
case – CAs and other business advisers.
RAS Risk Advisory Services.
Sector This is the term used to describe the industries we
work in as an organisation due to our client base
and experience.
Service lines Our description for the services we offer to exter-
nal clients. Other companies may refer to them as
‘Business Units’, ‘Business Lines’, ‘Divisions’ etc.
Shared Services These are the core support services that are shared
by all BDO regions in South Africa to ensure that
we all adopt and use the same policies, procedures
and brand identity, and can benefit from econo-
mies of scale.
Sharepoint This refers to our local company intranet. Only
staff have access to this essential tool for sharing
documents and knowledge.
Statucor Our Company Secretarial service line.
Values The day-to-day values that we all live by.
Xero™ Online accounting and advisory software provided
to clients through Business Services & Advisory.

  • 4. For internal use only OUR STAFF In SouthAfrica, our staff complement is approximately 750.The regional breakdown is roughly: Durban – 70; Johannesburg – 450; CapeTown – 150; Pretoria – 110. OURCULTURE The BDO culture is something quite tangible – you’ll feel it the moment you walk through the door and are warmly greeted by one of our receptionists.This applies to all our offices, whether you visit CapeTown, London or Nairobi. Comments such as ‘people greet me when they see me’ and ‘people care about me’ to ‘we have fun at work’ all demonstrate that at BDO we have a culture of working hard, but also of taking time to get to know our colleagues, many of whom become friends. Many of our partners have come through the ranks, having completed their articles at BDO.You’ll find a supporting working environment, an open door policy, opportunities to become involved in a range of extra activities – from Sports and Social events and community involvement and events that support and promote the BDOValues. OUR HISTORY BDO in SouthAfrica has its roots in Spencer Shaw Hood, a firm which opened its doors in 1938.The BDO network was formed in 1963 and Spencer Steward, as the firm was then known, joined the BDO network in 1980. In 2009, a decision was taken globally to drop the local member firm names and every Member Firm is now known simply as ‘BDO’ in their local market. TRANSFORMATIONAND DIVERSITY BDO embraces the need for transformation and diversity, both within our company and the accounting profession sector.To this end, we have established aTransformation Committee to oversee and drive the steps needed to ensure that all staff have access to equal opportunities.The Committee’s key focus areas are the increased recruitment ofAfrican, Indian, Coloured and Female staff; and a focus on succession planning to redress the employment profile at senior levels within the organisation.
