3. What is thermal pollution?
When the quality of water is degraded as results of
modification in close water temperature it's referred to as
pollution that affects the water quality and that type water
termed anomaly for consumption is significantly for drinking
purpose. A rise in the optimum water temperature through a
method (steel factories, power homes, and energy plants)
might even be stated as "Thermal Pollution."
4. ● Depleted level of oxygen in natural water
● Contamination of water
● Thermal shock which results in increase in
temperature in water bodies
● Adverse effect on water plants
● Unexpected migration of water animals
● Unfavorable effect on water biodiversity
EFFECTS OF THERMAL POLLUTION
5. ● water availed as coolant and ejected back into
water bodies
● growing industrial activities
● release of cold water
● chemical pollutants discharged into water
● waste of livestock mixed into water
● natural geo-thermal activities
CAUSES OF THERMAL POLLUTION
6. ● Coal-fired Power Plants : Few thermal power plants avail coal
as fuel. Power plants which use coal represent the key supply of
the pollution.
● Industrial Effluents: Industries producing electricity require a
great deal of cooling water for warmth removal.
● Atomic power Plants: Nuclear power plants release an
oversized quantity of unused heat and traces of virulent radio
nuclear into close water streams.
● Domestic Sewage: Domestic sewerage is commonly discharged
into rivers, canals, and lakes with-out waste treatment.
SOURCES OF THERMAL POLLUTION
7. CONTROLLING THERMAL POLLUTION
• Cooling Ponds: Cooling ponds or reservoirs represent the best technique of
dominant thermal discharges. This is often the best and most cost-effective
technique which helps in losing the heat of the water to a substantial low
temperature.
• Cooling Towers: cooling towers are availed to dissipate the recovered waste
heat thus on eliminate the issues of pollution.
• Artificial Lake: These lakes are artificial bodies of water which supply attainable
various to once through cooling. The warmth is eventually dissipated through
vaporization.
8. PREVENTIVE MEASURES
Thermal pollution could be controlled by employing of few efficient scientific
techniques such as:
• Reduce electricity usage
• Release heated water in less vulnerable regions
• Reuse of heated water
• Tree planting along the shorelines
• Use of alternative source of energy
• Environmental awareness
9. EXAMPLE OF THERMAL POLLUTION
• In a 2016 global analysis of thermal pollution in rivers, the Mississippi River topped the list.
• Sixty-two percent of the river's heat emissions came from coal-fired power plants, and
28% from nuclear power generation.
• Europe's Rhine River also suffered significant impacts from power plant emissions, most
notably from nuclear plants.
• Water-scarce countries, particularly in the Middle East, have turned to desalination as a
means of bolstering water security in the face of drought and climate change.
• At California's last operating nuclear power plant, Diablo Canyon near San Luis Obispo,
opponents have long raised concerns about the ecosystem impacts of the plant
discharging millions of gallons of heated seawater each day back to the ocean.
