SUPERVISOR CHRISTENSEN ANNOUNCES FOCUSED STREET CLEANING
THROUGHOUT DISTRICT 3
Supervisor Julie Christensen announces focused street cleaning throughout District 3
August 25th, 2015

San Francisco, CA – In speaking with neighbors throughout the district, many have expressed
concerns about the dirt and trash on streets and sidewalks. In response, Supervisor Christensen
requested additional funding for Public Works, and has asked them for a focused cleaning effort
which includes many areas that don’t see regular mechanical street cleaning, as well as the steps
and alleyways throughout the district.
Public Works will clean bus stops and shelters, flush pipes, and perform a deep mechanical
cleaning of streets, curbs, and gutters starting on August 25th
through the end of September.
“Some streets in our district receive regular mechanical street sweeping and some do not. This is
largely the result of the long ago preferences of neighbors - some of whom opted for the cleaning
and others that balked at shuffling cars,” stated Supervisor Julie Christensen. “It may be possible
to expand regular mechanical street cleaning if enough neighbors in an area express interest.”
It’s also important to remind property owners and building managers that they are legally
responsible for keeping the sidewalks around their buildings swept and clean.
“I am grateful to neighborhood merchants and residents who augment these efforts by organizing
neighborhood cleanups. We are also largely impressed with the work many of our Community
Benefit Districts and Business Improvement Districts do in providing clean neighborhoods and
merchant corridors. Each person who picks up a piece of trash or reports dumping does their part
to make our district healthier and more pleasant.”
In addition to the cleaning efforts of Public Works, Chinese Newcomers Service Center just kicked
off their new year of funding for the Keep Chinatown Clean program to once again focus their
efforts on the cleanliness of Chinatown in conjunction with Public Works.
At the request of Supervisor Christensen, many parts of District 3 that already see regular
mechanical street cleaning have seen an increase in cleaning efforts by Public Works – to include
steps/stairways and alleyways.
Please report dumping, or spot cleaning requests, to 311.
