Dr. Eric Schwartz Leads APA-Accredited Doctoral Internship Program
Eric Schwartz, Psy.D., ABPP,
is the vice president of clinical
services and director of
psychology internship training.
He has been making a difference
at Sarah Reed for over 21 years.
Eric, how did the doctoral internship program get its start?
Sarah Reed offers a 2,000-hour doctoral internship program in Health Services Psychology that is fully accredited by the American
Psychological Association.  The internship funds three full-time training positions beginning in early August and lasting 12 months. Since
its inception in the early 1980s, this program has trained students from over 30 colleges and universities throughout the country.
"The doctoral internship program began as a collaboration between Penn State University and Sarah
A. Reed Children's Center. The program expanded in May 1998 when I was hired as the program
director. During that same year, the doctoral internship program became accredited by the American
Psychological Association (APA), making Sarah A. Reed Children's Center the first agency in the
region to operate an APA-accredited doctoral internship program."
"It's an honor to train emerging psychologists and help them along their career path. We've had 60 doctoral interns complete the training
program since I started in 1998, and I still keep in touch with most of them! They are all very successful. I have a strong professional
commitment to give back to the field of psychology, and I'm immensely appreciative of Sarah Reed's support of this great program."
Can you tell us about the number of applications you receive and the selection process?
What is the most rewarding part about your role as the director of the Doctoral Internship Program?
What are some of the projects the doctoral interns are involved with?
Congratulations to our doctoral interns who completed the 2018-
2019 program! We wish each of you the very best.

"I'm so proud of Sarah Reed's doctoral internship program because our interns are involved in a wide
variety of projects and opportunities that are unique to our agency. They gain experience in all of our
program areas, from Residential Treatment to the Outpatient Program and everything in between. The
interns run group, individual and family therapy sessions, learn how to work with very diverse
populations of people, participate in didactic seminars, and complete a group research project."
"Typically I receive about 50 applications annually from doctoral internship candidates all across the
country. Selecting our three doctoral interns is a very intricate, time-consuming process that involves a
lot of face-to-face interviews and phone calls as part of the APPIC Match Process conducted by the
National Matching Service in Toronto."

Staff Member Spotlight: Dr. Ryan Kobylinski, Child Psychiatrist
Dr. Kobylinski has been helping children and families at Sarah Reed for seven years. We sat down with him to learn more about the
difference he is making and what inspired him to enter the field of child psychiatry.
Can you tell us a little bit about your background?
"I grew up in Erie, PA, and graduated from Gannon University and Lake Erie College of Osteopathic
Medicine. I completed my residency at the Cleveland Clinic and my child psychiatry fellowship at
Akron Children's Hospital. Interestingly enough, I did a psychiatric rotation at Sarah A. Reed
Children's Center during my third year at LECOM, which further sparked my interest in the field of
child psychiatry."
What do you enjoy most about being a child psychiatrist?
"I love collaborating with our treatment teams and families to find solutions for their children's issues.
There is a strong team-based approach associated with this sub-specialty that I really enjoy."
What inspired you to work with at-risk youth?
"My own personal experiences, as well as a great deal of mental health issues within my family,
inspired me to work with this special population. These experiences give me unique insight and a
greater understanding of what my clients are going through, which is very beneficial in helping them
find solutions that work."
If you knew a parent whose child was struggling with behavioral or emotional challenges, why
would you refer them to Sarah A. Reed Children's Center for help?
"Sarah Reed offers services for multiple levels of care and has fantastic clinicians and support staff. We also have strong
relationships with all the local schools, which really helps with transitioning children out and back into their home schools. My best
advice to a parent who thinks their child is struggling is to talk with their child and gain as much information as possible - talk to their
child's friends, their teachers, and monitor what their child is doing. They can always call Sarah Reed's Outpatient Program for
help or our Acute Partial Hospitalization Program if the issues are more significant."
Dr. Ryan Kobylinski is a child
psychiatrist at Sarah Reed. He
helps in all program areas, but
focuses primarily on treating
children in our Residential &
Acute Partial Hospitalization
Programs.

B&L Wholesale Supply Company, and Brian
Mack, area sales manager (center), present the
proceeds from the 23rd Annual B&L Charity
Golf Tournament to Jim Mando, president and
CEO of Sarah Reed. Mark and his team at
B&L Wholesale Supply Company have raised
over $700,000 for the children at Sarah Reed
since their charity event began in 1996.
On August 8, 2019, a full field of over 100+ golfers took to the greens at Lake Shore
Country Club for the 23rd Annual B&L Charity Golf Tournament. Mark Manczka, Erie
branch manager for B&L Wholesale Supply Company and a Sarah Reed Board Member,
has been organizing this fundraiser alongside his B&L colleagues since 1996. This year
the event raised $40,205 for the children at Sarah Reed!
"Every dollar raised from this tournament is donated directly to Sarah A. Reed Children's
Center," said Jim Mando, president and CEO of Sarah Reed, at a recent Board meeting.
"Mark and his team do an amazing job organizing this event every year, and B&L covers
all the costs so that 100% of the proceeds benefit our children and families. We are very
grateful for B&L's generous support, along with all of our event sponsors and golfers."
The contributions from this event have helped to complete several major projects at Sarah
Reed over the years, including a new picnic shelter, a clinical observation room, the B&L
Dining Hall at the Residential Campus, the Sanctuary for Integrated Health & Wellness
Park at the Hamilton Campus, and the new James N. Herr Hall residential unit.

Jennifer Held, MS, is a therapist in our Residential Treatment Program. She is also a
talented artist and uses her creativity in therapy with the children and in agency-wide
activities. We're so proud to count Jen among the 360 heroes we have on staff! We
asked Jen to tell us, in her words, what makes her a hero:

"People forget that we have a bigger job here than just improving the child’s
behavior.  That's just on the surface. We need to do the internal work.  Healing
from their trauma, becoming empowered and healthy is tough work!  I’m a hero
because I don’t shy away from the hard work that needs to be done. I walk the hard
walk with them.”

section of our website at www.SarahReed.org.
Sarah Reed Hosts Regional SanctuaryÂź Training Event
The Sanctuary ModelÂź is a trauma-informed treatment intervention
that has proven to be very effective at helping children recover from
the damaging effects of trauma. In 2010, Sarah A. Reed Children's
Center became the first SanctuaryÂź-certified treatment center in the
region, and we continue to be re-certified every three years.
As an agency that's committed to on-going education and training
opportunities, Sarah Reed partnered with Perseus House and
Harborcreek Youth Services for the 2nd Annual Regional
SanctuaryÂź Network Day on August 22, 2019. Staff from all three
agencies led trainings on topics such as wellness, art, grief/loss, and
the effects of trauma. Attendees also participated in a panel
discussion led by agency representatives and enjoyed a keynote
presentation by Dr. Everett Painter, assistant professor of counseling,
school psychology and special education at Edinboro University.
Matt Haight, manager of training and employee development
at Sarah Reed, welcomed everyone to the 2nd Annual
Regional SanctuaryÂź Network Day on August 22nd at our
eastside campus, located at 1020 East 10th Street.
Do you have what it takes to be a hero? We're hiring! Sarah Reed offers four-
day work weeks and tuition assistance, plus opportunities in both residential and
classroom settings. If you or someone you know would like to apply or learn more,
please visit www.SarahReed.org or give us a call at (814) 835-7741.

Our Donors Make a Difference
Amber's Story
The generosity of our donors helps kids through the toughest years
of their childhood. Recently we had the privilege of speaking with
a young woman who was in our Residential Treatment Program
over a decade ago. She shared how Sarah A. Reed Children's
Center helped her through her struggle with depression and bipolar
disorder and transformed her life. What follows is only a portion
of her story, but it shows the incredible impact our agency, staff
and donors are making on the lives of children and families.
(Note: Amber's name has been altered to protect her anonymity.)

I spent my 5th
birthday at
Sarah Reed.

B
efore arriving at Sarah A. Reed Children's Center, I went through several different placements, including a couple of foster
homes. Even though my foster homes were nice and the people were caring, nobody ever really understood me. And quite
honestly, I didn't understand myself either.
My early years growing up in rural Pennsylvania were some of the hardest and scariest times of my life. When I was 8 years old I
went into my first foster home. The trauma and loss I had experienced up to that point was just too overwhelming for me to
process. Intense feelings of loss, anger and frustration consumed me. I battled severe depression for years and was later diagnosed
with bipolar disorder. I went from one placement to the next, carrying those burdensome labels of "depression" and "bipolar
disorder" with me. Nobody ever stopped to help me understand what these labels meant or why they affected my behavior the way
they did. How could I overcome these challenges and live a healthy, happy life if I didn't understand what was going on?
All of that changed when I was 14 and went to Sarah Reed.
The staff at Sarah Reed were the only ones who were able to help me understand what I was feeling and why. They never made me
feel like there was something wrong with me. For the first time, I felt like it was ok to be myself. Dr.B. and the behavioral
counselors got me to open up and work through my challenges. They even took the time to explain the medical reasons behind my
depression and bipolar disorder. I finally began to realize how trauma and my life experiences affected my mental health.
Even on my bad days, I knew my Sarah Reed family truly cared about me. They helped me begin healing from the childhood
trauma I experienced and worked with me to regain control of my mental health and well-being.
I'll be the first to admit that it is a long process that takes time (I actually came back to Sarah Reed a second time when I was 17),
but I would never have the amazing life I have today if it wasn't for this life-changing agency. Thanks to Sarah Reed, I went to
college to become a therapist and help others like me, and I now have two beautiful children with one on the way!
Thank you to the amazing staff and community of donors who helped me transform my life!
~Amber, 28

Doctoral Internship Program at Sarah A. Reed Children's Center

  • 1. at Sarah A. Reed Children's Center 2445 West 34th Street Erie, PA 16506 (814) 838-1954 www.SarahReed.org Fall 2019 2018-2019 Interns Shining Bright Sarah A. Reed Children's Center Dr. Eric Schwartz Leads APA-Accredited Doctoral Internship Program Eric Schwartz, Psy.D., ABPP, is the vice president of clinical services and director of  psychology internship training. He has been making a difference at Sarah Reed for over 21 years. Eric, how did the doctoral internship program get its start? Sarah Reed offers a 2,000-hour doctoral internship program in Health Services Psychology that is fully accredited by the American Psychological Association.  The internship funds three full-time training positions beginning in early August and lasting 12 months. Since its inception in the early 1980s, this program has trained students from over 30 colleges and universities throughout the country. "The doctoral internship program began as a collaboration between Penn State University and Sarah A. Reed Children's Center. The program expanded in May 1998 when I was hired as the program director. During that same year, the doctoral internship program became accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA), making Sarah A. Reed Children's Center the first agency in the region to operate an APA-accredited doctoral internship program." "It's an honor to train emerging psychologists and help them along their career path. We've had 60 doctoral interns complete the training program since I started in 1998, and I still keep in touch with most of them! They are all very successful. I have a strong professional commitment to give back to the field of psychology, and I'm immensely appreciative of Sarah Reed's support of this great program." Can you tell us about the number of applications you receive and the selection process? What is the most rewarding part about your role as the director of the Doctoral Internship Program? What are some of the projects the doctoral interns are involved with? Congratulations to our doctoral interns who completed the 2018- 2019 program! We wish each of you the very best. Pictured (L to R): Erica Printzker, intern (James Madison University); Amanda Hanrahan, intern (University of Milwaukee); Dr. Eric Schwartz, vice president of clinical services & director of psychology internship training at Sarah Reed; Kristen Caccimelio, intern (Adler University); and Dr. Laura Amoscato, director of quality assurance/quality improvement & assistant director of psychology internship training. NwP hoto Meet Our 2019-2020 Doctoral Interns Our 2018-2019 Doctoral Interns Anthony Nedelman Anthony is working on his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Fairleigh Dickinson University. He is from Chagrin Falls, OH. Jaclynn Stankus Jaclynn is working on her Ph.D. in School Psychology at Duquesne University. She is from Canonsburg, PA. William Phillips William is working on his Ph.D. in School Psychology at Ball State University. He is from Waxahachie, TX. "I'm so proud of Sarah Reed's doctoral internship program because our interns are involved in a wide variety of projects and opportunities that are unique to our agency. They gain experience in all of our program areas, from Residential Treatment to the Outpatient Program and everything in between. The interns run group, individual and family therapy sessions, learn how to work with very diverse populations of people, participate in didactic seminars, and complete a group research project." "Typically I receive about 50 applications annually from doctoral internship candidates all across the country. Selecting our three doctoral interns is a very intricate, time-consuming process that involves a lot of face-to-face interviews and phone calls as part of the APPIC Match Process conducted by the National Matching Service in Toronto."

Kidsandtheirfamiliesareoftenableto seesuccesswhiletheirchildrenareinourprograms, whichchangessomeofthehopelessnesstheyhadpriorto treatment." ~Dr.RyanKobylinksi, childpsychiatrist atSarahReed Staff Member Spotlight: Dr. Ryan Kobylinski, Child Psychiatrist Dr. Kobylinski has been helping children and families at Sarah Reed for seven years. We sat down with him to learn more about the difference he is making and what inspired him to enter the field of child psychiatry. Can you tell us a little bit about your background? "I grew up in Erie, PA, and graduated from Gannon University and Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. I completed my residency at the Cleveland Clinic and my child psychiatry fellowship at Akron Children's Hospital. Interestingly enough, I did a psychiatric rotation at Sarah A. Reed Children's Center during my third year at LECOM, which further sparked my interest in the field of child psychiatry." What do you enjoy most about being a child psychiatrist? "I love collaborating with our treatment teams and families to find solutions for their children's issues. There is a strong team-based approach associated with this sub-specialty that I really enjoy." What inspired you to work with at-risk youth? "My own personal experiences, as well as a great deal of mental health issues within my family, inspired me to work with this special population. These experiences give me unique insight and a greater understanding of what my clients are going through, which is very beneficial in helping them find solutions that work." If you knew a parent whose child was struggling with behavioral or emotional challenges, why would you refer them to Sarah A. Reed Children's Center for help? "Sarah Reed offers services for multiple levels of care and has fantastic clinicians and support staff. We also have strong relationships with all the local schools, which really helps with transitioning children out and back into their home schools. My best advice to a parent who thinks their child is struggling is to talk with their child and gain as much information as possible - talk to their child's friends, their teachers, and monitor what their child is doing. They can always call Sarah Reed's Outpatient Program for help or our Acute Partial Hospitalization Program if the issues are more significant." Dr. Ryan Kobylinski is a child psychiatrist at Sarah Reed. He helps in all program areas, but focuses primarily on treating children in our Residential & Acute Partial Hospitalization Programs. Board Member Mark Manczka Tees Up a Win Every Year for Sarah Reed Mark Manczka (right), Erie branch manager at B&L Wholesale Supply Company, and Brian Mack, area sales manager (center), present the proceeds from the 23rd Annual B&L Charity Golf Tournament to Jim Mando, president and CEO of Sarah Reed. Mark and his team at B&L Wholesale Supply Company have raised over $700,000 for the children at Sarah Reed since their charity event began in 1996. On August 8, 2019, a full field of over 100+ golfers took to the greens at Lake Shore Country Club for the 23rd Annual B&L Charity Golf Tournament. Mark Manczka, Erie branch manager for B&L Wholesale Supply Company and a Sarah Reed Board Member, has been organizing this fundraiser alongside his B&L colleagues since 1996. This year the event raised $40,205 for the children at Sarah Reed! "Every dollar raised from this tournament is donated directly to Sarah A. Reed Children's Center," said Jim Mando, president and CEO of Sarah Reed, at a recent Board meeting. "Mark and his team do an amazing job organizing this event every year, and B&L covers all the costs so that 100% of the proceeds benefit our children and families. We are very grateful for B&L's generous support, along with all of our event sponsors and golfers." The contributions from this event have helped to complete several major projects at Sarah Reed over the years, including a new picnic shelter, a clinical observation room, the B&L Dining Hall at the Residential Campus, the Sanctuary for Integrated Health & Wellness Park at the Hamilton Campus, and the new James N. Herr Hall residential unit.

This eight-week course is partially funded through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program. The Sarah Reed Women's Auxiliary plans several holiday-themed events throughout the year at our Residential Program, including pumpkin decorating! We greatly appreciate everything they do for the children. Our Art & Rec Therapy staff members organize a Summer Olympics each year for the children in the Residential Program. Everyone demonstrated great teamwork and sportsmanship! Michael Gustafson, MSW, clinical intervention specialist at Sarah Reed, conducts a music therapy session for children at our Community and School- Based Behavioral Health (CSBBH) program in Union City alongside Denise McSorley, our behavioral health worker. Sarah Reed has worked with Erie’s Public Schools for over 25 years to provide behavioral health and educational support to students. We have three alternative education programs at Emerson-Gridley. Students in our SanctuaryÂź Based Learning Program used their creativity to decorate the ceiling tiles outside their classrooms at Emerson-Gridley. They love sharing their clever designs with everyone! Alternative Education Programs Outpatient Behavioral Health Services Staff training and professional development are an integral part of our agency, and our annual Sanctuary Refresher Day always proves to be a day filled with creativity and camaraderie! For our 2019 Sanctuary Refresher Day on August 21st, each department across the agency was challenged to show how they "Step into Sanctuary." Staff worked together to paint stepping stones, which were then placed in the front garden at our main Residential Campus. Special thanks to all the members of Sarah Reed's Core Team for facilitating this project and bringing the agency together! Sanctuary Refresher Day We're proud to introduce you to Dr. Sallie Richards, the new supervisor of our Psychological Assessment Clinic! The Clinic offers children and adults a wide range of testing to help diagnose ADHD, autism, anxiety, depression, and more. Call (814) 480-8985 to see how we can help.
  • 4. Around Campus Hamilton Campus - Partial Hospitalization Program Thanks to the United Way of Erie County and the Erie Times-News, we have a Little Free Library at Hamilton. Students worked with staff members Twila Zellefrow and Lisa Kalagassy to create this masterpiece! Tyler Titus, LPC (left), gave the keynote presentation at the Partial Program's first Summer Lecture Series! Tyler is joined by Hamilton staff members Dr. Brittany Hayden (right) and Tracey Sampson. Shining Bright - Fall 2019 Page 4 Jennifer Held, MS, is a therapist in our Residential Treatment Program. She is also a talented artist and uses her creativity in therapy with the children and in agency-wide activities. We're so proud to count Jen among the 360 heroes we have on staff! We asked Jen to tell us, in her words, what makes her a hero:   "People forget that we have a bigger job here than just improving the child’s behavior.  That's just on the surface. We need to do the internal work.  Healing from their trauma, becoming empowered and healthy is tough work!  I’m a hero because I don’t shy away from the hard work that needs to be done. I walk the hard walk with them.” Want to read more about Jen and see our latest staff videos? Visit the employment section of our website at www.SarahReed.org. Sarah Reed Hosts Regional SanctuaryÂź Training Event The Sanctuary ModelÂź is a trauma-informed treatment intervention that has proven to be very effective at helping children recover from the damaging effects of trauma. In 2010, Sarah A. Reed Children's Center became the first SanctuaryÂź-certified treatment center in the region, and we continue to be re-certified every three years. As an agency that's committed to on-going education and training opportunities, Sarah Reed partnered with Perseus House and Harborcreek Youth Services for the 2nd Annual Regional SanctuaryÂź Network Day on August 22, 2019. Staff from all three agencies led trainings on topics such as wellness, art, grief/loss, and the effects of trauma. Attendees also participated in a panel discussion led by agency representatives and enjoyed a keynote presentation by Dr. Everett Painter, assistant professor of counseling, school psychology and special education at Edinboro University. Matt Haight, manager of training and employee development at Sarah Reed, welcomed everyone to the 2nd Annual Regional SanctuaryÂź Network Day on August 22nd at our eastside campus, located at 1020 East 10th Street. Do you have what it takes to be a hero? We're hiring! Sarah Reed offers four- day work weeks and tuition assistance, plus opportunities in both residential and classroom settings. If you or someone you know would like to apply or learn more, please visit www.SarahReed.org or give us a call at (814) 835-7741. Meet Our Hero - Jennifer Held Check out the newest addition to our Sanctuary for Integrated Health & Wellness Park! This basketball hoop was installed in August and is a huge hit. The park is open to the community during non-school hours. Jennifer Held, Therapist 22 Years of Service
  • 5. Shining Bright - Fall 2019 Our Donors Make a Difference Amber's Story The generosity of our donors helps kids through the toughest years of their childhood. Recently we had the privilege of speaking with a young woman who was in our Residential Treatment Program over a decade ago. She shared how Sarah A. Reed Children's Center helped her through her struggle with depression and bipolar disorder and transformed her life. What follows is only a portion of her story, but it shows the incredible impact our agency, staff and donors are making on the lives of children and families. (Note: Amber's name has been altered to protect her anonymity.)  Page 5 I spent my 5th birthday at Sarah Reed.   1 B efore arriving at Sarah A. Reed Children's Center, I went through several different placements, including a couple of foster homes. Even though my foster homes were nice and the people were caring, nobody ever really understood me. And quite honestly, I didn't understand myself either. My early years growing up in rural Pennsylvania were some of the hardest and scariest times of my life. When I was 8 years old I went into my first foster home. The trauma and loss I had experienced up to that point was just too overwhelming for me to process. Intense feelings of loss, anger and frustration consumed me. I battled severe depression for years and was later diagnosed with bipolar disorder. I went from one placement to the next, carrying those burdensome labels of "depression" and "bipolar disorder" with me. Nobody ever stopped to help me understand what these labels meant or why they affected my behavior the way they did. How could I overcome these challenges and live a healthy, happy life if I didn't understand what was going on? All of that changed when I was 14 and went to Sarah Reed. The staff at Sarah Reed were the only ones who were able to help me understand what I was feeling and why. They never made me feel like there was something wrong with me. For the first time, I felt like it was ok to be myself. Dr.B. and the behavioral counselors got me to open up and work through my challenges. They even took the time to explain the medical reasons behind my depression and bipolar disorder. I finally began to realize how trauma and my life experiences affected my mental health. Even on my bad days, I knew my Sarah Reed family truly cared about me. They helped me begin healing from the childhood trauma I experienced and worked with me to regain control of my mental health and well-being. I'll be the first to admit that it is a long process that takes time (I actually came back to Sarah Reed a second time when I was 17), but I would never have the amazing life I have today if it wasn't for this life-changing agency. Thanks to Sarah Reed, I went to college to become a therapist and help others like me, and I now have two beautiful children with one on the way! Thank you to the amazing staff and community of donors who helped me transform my life! ~Amber, 28 Ways You Can Make a Difference Our donors make our programs possible. There are a variety of ways you can make an impact on the lives of the 1,700 children and families we serve each year. To learn more, please visit us online at www.SarahReed.org/ways-to-give or contact Gary L. Bukowski, MA, CFRE, associate vice president of development, at (814) Giving From Your Retirement Plan (for donors age 70.5 and up) Giving to the Annual Fund Corporate Giving 835-7602 or at GBukowski@SarahReed.org. Thank you! Atty. Shaun Adrian (left) and Atty. Dan Miller (right) present a $15,000 gift on behalf of MacDonald Illig Jones & Britton, LLP to Gary L.
