"It is easy to estimate the value of the property and tell of the thoroughly
organized institution that has grown out of a venture of faith.
But who can estimate the good it has done or follow its far reaching
influences? Volumes would not tell the story of all the lives it has helped."

3. Letter from the President and CEO
s advances in behavioral health treatment continue to evolve and change, Sarah Reed’s Vision to be a center of excellence
providing innovative evidence-based treatment and services through research, clinical practice and professional training is
more important than ever. It has always been our mission to improve the well-being of every person who seeks our services.
But, as populations and needs shift, technology advances and competition continues to emerge, we’re facing new challenges
every day.
To rise above these challenges, it’s imperative that we leverage our unique strengths. We must continue to build upon the
passion and dedication of our talented staff and the unmatched quality of the care that we provide. Additionally, we must
take full advantage of the potential power of our diversified services and respond to the changing needs of our clients and community.
In an effort to fully understand our core competencies and strengths as well as our weaknesses and threats, we once again engaged the services of Decision
Associates for their strategic planning expertise. Over the past six months, guided by our consultant, eight members of our senior staff reviewed and analyzed
data from our Board of Directors, staff, community members and stakeholders. The result of their work is our new strategic plan. That plan clearly outlines
seven goals and provides strategies for reaching each.
During the current planning process, the committee discovered that many people agree about the path our organization needs to take in order to improve our
services and to remain a leader in providing Behavioral Health Services.
Because so many people contributed to this effort, I am confident that we can achieve the ultimate goal of strategic planning: Aligning our resources with our
priorities so that we can continue to fulfill our mission, vision and values. Creating a written document, however, is only the first step in an ongoing process
that must be sustained with careful oversight and activity. Guided by seven strategies, the new strategic plan will serve as our roadmap for the future.
Finally, our Board and senior staff will now oversee the implementation of the plan. Key performance indicators will help track the progress over the coming
years and ongoing communication and engagement with the Board will ensure that strategic planning remains part of our culture.
I’m grateful to the many who contributed their time, energy and ideas to creating this plan! This is an exciting time for all of us here at Sarah Reed and I
firmly believe that we will continue to have success now and in the future. Clearly, our best years lie ahead and I’m grateful in advance for your continued
participation and feedback to make this organization a model for all who work here or seek treatment.
Sincerely,
James D. Mando

4. About Sarah A. Reed Children's Center
he Children’s Center was founded in 1871, in Erie, Pennsylvania, by a group of women interested in helping
orphaned and homeless children. Sarah Reed was an original member of this group who founded "The Association
for Improving the Conditions of the Poor, and a Home for the Friendless.” Miss Reed served as President for 45
years from 1889 to her death in 1934. Her contributions to the agency’s early development were so substantial
that in 1935 the Center was renamed in her honor. Over a period of thirty years the organization evolved.
In 1961 Sarah A. Reed Children's Center opened its main campus in Millcreek Township. By 1978, all children
referred to the Sarah Reed Residential Program required specialized mental health treatment, thus ushering in a
new era of services designed for children. In 1986, two independent nonprofit corporations emerged: Sarah A.
Reed Children's Center and the Sarah Reed Retirement Center.
Today, Sarah Reed is a multi-service agency focusing on prevention, early identification, care and treatment of children and families struggling with life
traumas. The Children’s Center serves a geographic area to include all counties in Pennsylvania and the Southern Tier of
New York State. The agency serves over 900 children and adolescents per day at our 5 program facilities, area school
districts and community-based services.
As it enters its 148th year as a leader in the field of behavioral health, Sarah Reed and its highly qualified staff has been
innovative, proactive, and focused on providing the most effective and efficient services to the Erie community and
beyond. We have expanded our reach to serve more kids across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as well as more
children, adolescents, families, and adults in our own community. Highlights include our new CSBBH program in
Union City, our new Psychological Assessment Clinic, and our new Ridgefield Campus for clinical and educational
services.
The future of our agency is bright. We are driven by our collective knowledge and wisdom, skills and talents, and
innovation and leadership to be laser-focused on the behavioral health and wellness of the individuals we serve now and
those we will serve in the future. We will positively impact our community by developing cutting edge, well-supported,
and holistic services that encapsulate the spirit of Sarah Reed as a beacon of hope and a pathway towards healing for all.
