Imagining chairs
Technical misinformation:

- Not using images is something deliberated. Words are

  also images in your mind

- White paper is also a way of no-thing, and

  deliberated.

- White pages are a place for thinking in what you never

  thought before.

- The reader will have to use his or her imagination

- If you are not able to be open-minded stop reading.

- Simple is wisdom
No-thing:

Imagining chairs
Background:

                              Foreground:

Designers are so obsess of designing chairs, screws

and surfaces, that they almost forgot that chairs are for

sitting. That every place you can sit on can be your chair…

With this project what I want to achieve is an

abstraction of chairs. Thinking about what a chair really

is. Reducing something designed many times to the basic

concept of what it is for:

    TO SIT

Nowadays there is no need of more chairs in the world.

There is only the vanity and the will of fame from so many

designers, which I find a senseless irresponsible act.

    I’m not a designer.

Nevertheless I know there are designers. I know that

this project is not something so new. This year, 2012, have

been selected as the year of NOT designing chairs. Also,

companies as VITRA have different models of objects that

they can be use to sit.

    This a step forward.

This is a challenge to the contest itself.

    The competition claims that:

               This international competition intends to

stress the idea that Design does have a real

impact upon peoples’ quality of life, while
acknowledging that excellence in design has no

             borders.

From this point of view, chairs do have an

iconic value. One may even say that,

symbolically, chairs can translate the vision

their author has of the world, of life styles, of

innovation and even his thoughts on the

             discipline itself.

Do those lines really mean something? Or this is just

a campaign for promoting the companies that are behind the

contest.

Breaking an icon like chair presenting no-thing has

also an iconic value. We deny the social conventions

through the abstraction. Each parson has an incredible

capacity and will to do.

       It’s time for a change.

Design has a meaning today, it’s submitted to the

industry forgetting about people. Design seeks a model in

which you can find universal solutions to problems. This

creates a model that rules nature and humans. Design

promotes lifestyles and consumerism. This project is about

something that designers have forgotten about.

Why we can only sit on chairs?

       What if people just sit?

What if we just learn not to design?
No-thing:

                             No-thing is everything.

Everything you can sit on should be your chair.

       Everything is relative.

       Everything is falling apart.

No-thing is the essence of everything. Through this

project I seek the nature of an object in the stage of no-

thinking. What it means approaching to the action not the

object. In this case:

       TO SIT

To sit is an action that is in everyone’s

subconscious. That implies that everything, as well as no-

thing, involves what is in the mind. Not the physical

aspects of the objects.

Chairs only offer an illusion of permanence.

Everything is falling apart. There is no need of keep going

designing chairs, we just have to accept that what we need

is to sit, rest, and keep our mind clear.

Now look around. Think of what kids are doing when

they play. By no-thing I want to become detached of

unnecessary things. Break up with the material attachment

and also hierarchical thinking.

No-thing as a concept is something abstract. Anyone

can find an answer by itself just by the act of acting.

       No-thing is keen and sharp.

       No-thing is simple.
Indications to sit:

Besides is a normal a regular activity that humans in

general are doing quite regular. They don’t think about too

much.

Learn from the ones who had no habits.

There is your not-so-expensive chair; you will learn how to

sit when you forget about constructing chairs:

  1. – Find yourself feeling yourself

  2. – Empty your mind; if you are tired or need to rest

  3. – Look around

  4. – Pick a place

  5. – Go there

  6. – Place your bottom in the place:

          a. – If comfortable: Stay there until you are not

tired or don’t need to rest anymore

          b. – If uncomfortable: go 3 and repeat
Relevant understanding

Simple things are a way to wisdom.

               Everything is no-thing.

Everything can be a place for sit.

- Explore yourself

- Explore your world
You cannot represent no-thing;

As well you cannot represent everything.

            Open your mind.
Everything has no presence.

No-thing is the antithesis of universal.

      Not created, not destroyed.
Find yourself not thinking of a chair now.

When there is no chair, there are no limits or needs.

           No components or restrictions.
Accept the unavoidable,

Words are also images in your mind

   Everything is falling apart.
Senseless is meaningful.

I’m just suggesting a natural process.

       Things can be intangible
