5. CANADA’S HISTORICAL LEGACY
Although Canada is a relatively young country, there are
numerous events and symbols which have shaped Canada over
the past 150 years.
The following items are historical to Canada, and not only share
our past, but also represent the nation we have matured into
today.

Capsule Item: The Maple Leaf
Officially Canada’s national symbol since 1965,
• This symbolizes Canada’s origins as a cordial
people not founded by war, but rather through
peaceful negotiations.
Personal Significance:
As a Canadian Athlete, I always wear the Maple Leaf with
pride. Upon wearing the Canadian jersey, I reflect on what
my nation has done for me, and ensure I represent it with
passion and respect.
Sports teams and companies use the maple leaf
in it’s logo as a badge of pride, honor, and love
for our country.
Beyond this, it is a symbol of unity and equality
of all races, sexes, and religions .
8. CANADA’S MODERN LEGACY
Having had the privilege of visiting over 25 countries and
their unique cultures, I recognize what it means to be a
Canadian and what our legacy means around the world.
9. CANADA’S MODERN LEGACY
Capsule Item: A Hockey Puck
Ice Hockey originated in Canada in the 1800’s
and Canadians proudly call it, “Canada’s Game”.
Personal Significance:
As a traveling field hockey player, people often hear
“hockey” and “Canada” and naturally assume ice hockey.
Upon clarification, I am inevitably teased that I play the
wrong hockey, as ice hockey is Canada’s game!
It is estimated that 46% of Canadians watched
the Gold Medal Ice Hockey Game during the
2010 Olympic Games.
Ice hockey is a beacon for unity; it’s the
strongest catalyst that makes all Canadians
unite.
• During the 2010 Ice Hockey games in Vancouver, I
saw race and differences be none existent. We all
felt unified, we all felt Canadian.

10. CANADA’S MODERN LEGACY
Capsule Item: Michael Buble’s Christmas Album
Canadian artists are emerging as global icons,
but always take pride in their Canadian roots.
Personal Significance:
While traveling, many who learn I’m from Canada express their love
for Michael Buble. In many ways, Buble is Canada’s voice during the
holidays and there is no better way to represent cold, snowy Canada
than with his Christmas album.
Our artist’s most globally and generationally
renowned songs have themes of love, sacrifice,
and home.
• Home – Michael Buble
• My Heart Will Go On (Titanic) – Celine Dion
• I Do It For You – Bryan Adams
These songs all encapsulate the loving and embracing
Canadian spirit that the world knows us for.

11. CANADA’S MODERN LEGACY
Capsule Item: Sorry Shirt
Canadians have been stereotyped by many as
“The Nicest People in the World”.
Personal Significance:
I’ll always remember when I met a girl in Lille, France
who told me she had lived in Canada for 6 months.
During that time , she said, she learned what it meant
to be polite and appeasing.
Famed for saying “sorry”, Canada uses the
expression more out of politeness rather than
for it’s apologetic meaning.
Various theories as to why we are so nice:
• History demands it (eg. peaceful confederation)
• To distinguish ourselves from Americans
• Passive-aggressiveness or arrogance
• Fear of being too firm or aggressive

12. CANADA’S MODERN LEGACY
In Canada, we go beyond accommodating
differences, we embrace and celebrate diversity.
Personal Significance:
Our diversity and embracement of differences is what I
take most pride in; as a second-generation immigrant
to a Spanish mother and Chinese father, I can truly say
I have never felt any form of prejudice or injustice in
Canada.
40% of Canada’s 1st and 2nd generation immigrants.
• Stats-Canada predicts 32% of Canada’s population to
be of a visible minority group by 2031.
We truly embrace people of all races, religions,
and sexual orientations
• 1st country outside Europe, and 4th in the world to
legalize same-sex marriage.
• Since confederation, diverse religious practices
have been encouraged
