A huge new feature : Datamarts
Some things just take time : PowerPoint integration
The reporting flexibility : Field parameters
Paginated reports next level? : Exportable formatted tables
Make the data available programmatically : Execute DAX API
Improve manageability : Refresh API
The way to PBI : AAS automated migration experience
Finally: Sometimes, the small things are the best…
4. A huge new feature :
Datamarts
• Kind of Citizen / Self-service data warehouse development
• Extract / Transform data with Power Query Online
• Results are stored in Azure SQL
• Define measures / relationships in Data Mart
• Web editor
• A DirectQuery-mode dataset is automatically created
• Use of data:
• Create report against automatically created dataset
• Create dataset against automatically created dataset
• Create new dataset based on SQL endpoint
5. Some things just take time :
PowerPoint integration
How was your PPT integration experience
so far?
Most probably you remember exporting to
PPT as a picture or taking a screenshot and
embedding this.
Not very nice, nothing about interactivity…
But now…
You can embed PPT with live interaction to
your report and by this really use PPT how
it should be done, as a discussion and
interaction tool!
Let’s try it out together…
6. The reporting flexibility :
Field parameters
- Answers a long-time request:
- Allow viewers to easily change measures / categories in a visual
- Based on calculation groups
- More controlled and functional approach than the personalization effort:
- Control:
- model creator to define which measures / categories of the model will be available
for choice
- report creator to define which reports / pages / visuals will support which subset of
the model’s measures / categories
- Functionality:
- E.g. use as slicer and allow to change measure for all visuals on a page
- Allows more opportunities to workaround Power BI limitations:
- E.g. Using Power BI Field Parameters to translate Data and Values – Gerhard Brueckl
7. Paginated reports next level? :
Exportable formatted tables
• Allow you to export data from a selected table from a dataset and format the output.
• Nice, but seems pretty basic. So, why am I excited about it?
1. Well, you create a paginated report in the web. Were you able to do this before?
2. Did you read the licensing requirements thoroughly…?
8. Make the data available programmatically :
Execute DAX API
• Make use of the data and business logic from anywhere supporting Rest API
• ETL
• Applications
• …
• And if you are not that deep into Rest API, but need to export data from your dataset on a regular
basis?
• Use the Power Automate action
9. Improve manageability :
Refresh API
• API support before:
• Manual synchronous refresh
• Refresh of full dataset
• No cancellation of running refresh
• New enhanced :
• Manual asynchronous refresh
• Refresh of individual tables / partitions
• Application of incremental refresh policies
• Cancellation of running refresh possible
• …
10. The way to PBI : AAS automated migration
experience
Who could tell better than Mr. Clicky Clicky Draggy Droppy…
11. Finally:
Sometimes, the small things are the best…
You wanna know what I like best from all the amazing new features?
It’s canvas zoom! :-D
