3. INTRODUCTION
• Sir William Siemens proffered the use
of platinum as the element in a RTD.
• The classical resistance temperature
detector (RTD)construction using
platinum was proposed by
C.H.Meyers in 1932
• He wound a helical coil of platinum on
a crossed mica web and mounted the
assembly insidea glass tube. This
construction minimized strain on the
wire while maximizing resistance.
4. What is an RTD
• Resistance Thermometers are the Sensors used to
measure Temperature by Comparing the Resistance of
the RTD element with Temperature.
• RTD converts the Temperature into the Electrical
Resistance, which can be measured using the
Wheatstone Bridge.
5. WHAT is PT-100
• PT-100 is a Platinum RTD which is most Widely used in
Industries.
• The Resistance of the PT-100 RTD is 100Ω at 0°C.
So the Resistance Temperature Co-Efficient of Platinum is
0.00392°C
6. Materials used for RTD
These are some Characteristics that must be
Possessed by RTD Components.
1. High Electrical Resistivity ,so that Sensing Element
can be Fabricated in Convenient Size.
2. High Resistance Temperature Co –Efficient for High
Sensitivity.
3. Linear Resistance Temperature Relationship.
4. No State or Phase change in Reasonable
Temperature Range.
5. Corrosion Resistance
8. RTD CONFIGURATION
• RTD is available in basically Three Configurations.
1. Two Wire Compensation
2. Three Wire Compensation
3. Four Wire Compensation
12. ADVANTAGES OF RTD
• Linear over wide operating range
• Wide temperature operating range
• High temperature Operating range
• Interchangeability over Wide Range.
• Good stability at High Temperature.
13. APPLICATIONS OF RTD
• Air conditioning and Refrigeration
• Food Processing
• Stoves and grills
• Textile production
• Plastics processing
• Petrochemical processing
• Micro electronics
• Air, gas and liquid temperature measurement
• Exhaust gas temperature measurement
