- Discovering Places is London 2012’s campaign to inspire everyone in the UK to discover their local environment – with all its hidden places, extraordinary spaces and the stories they have to tell. Discovering Places launches as part of Open Weekend – through a series of events. Context of project As the cultural Olympiad developed post winning the bid in 2005 and 2006 the program of major projects were created. The Heritage Alliance which is the umbrella body for the voluntary organisations within the heritage sector lobbied DCMS and then LOCOG to ensure that Heritage had a profile within the CO. As DP developed we created working relationships with the Natural Environment and Built Environment and Discovering Places was born! Cross-sector partnerships including historic, built and natural environment, public, private and voluntary sectors
- At the same time we were developing our project with DCMS and LOCOG other major projects were being developed DP has strong working relationships with the other major projects and will begin to work collaboratively with them Unlimited: Celebrating disability art and culture Stories of the World: people of all backgrounds, from every part of the UK, will become 'curators' of the collections and objects held in museums, libraries and archives. Artists taking the lead: Twelve projects have won commissions totalling £5.4 million to create new works of art across the UK: one in each of the nine English regions, and in the nations of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Sounds : This major music programme will showcase and celebrate the sounds of the UK in 2012. It is being led by the BBC – World River and Youth Music World Shakespeare Festival: will be a series of high-profile collaborative productions with UK theatre companies and their international counterparts from ten Olympic nations and regions, starting on Shakespeare’s birthday, 23 April 2012, for three months Film Nation : Run in partnership with the UK Film Council and others, it will introduce young people to film, support them in developing social and film making skills, and provide opportunities to discover new and non-mainstream film. Sowewhereto: will empower young people to use space on their own terms Outdoor Arts : a large-scale outdoor arts project is being developed as part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.
- Discovering Places gives the environment sectors an ongoing opportunity to be involved in the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad Using the inspiration and profile of the Olympic and Paralympic games to Inspire our sectors Create new working partnerships to deliver new experiences to existing audiences excite new audiences Build new audiences Shine a spotlight on the fantastic array of things just around the corner from peoples homes and communities Local
- Using the public awareness of Open Weekend established audience LOCOG and THA will launch the project The weekend will have a series of one off participation events through out the country that specifically focus on the Natural, Historic and Built environments And you can be part of this launch
- We are looking for organisers / events Open Weekend challenge – personal best – do something different Criteria Free – ways and means around this Actively engages in environment – not just a craft workshop but a workshop themed with the surroundings New audience – appeal to the OW Benefit from : LOCOG Comms and PR Established identity of London 2012 to embed DP in Join up with OW audience – broadening audience Marketing Material – DP branding Toolkits Aware of negatives – but positives outweighed Registrations of events is through the Open Weekend registration process – logon to OW and ¾ down page is DP box – tick that and you come through to us.
