This document summarizes Prof. Jiahong Wen's presentation on disaster impacts and risk assessment in China given at IDRC Davos in August 2012. It notes that from 1990-2009, natural disasters accounted for 2.4% of China's GDP in direct economic losses. It also discusses issues with risk assessment in China including its academic nature rather than practical application, lack of collaboration, and limited international interaction. The document outlines GRIP-CERAM Shanghai's approach and three pillars to disaster risk assessment, as well as several tools and resources they have developed including a disaster database, risk information library, and mobile data collection tool. It concludes by reflecting on lessons learned in implementing GRIP's solutions and the importance of improved risk information

16. Lessons Learned
• Our experience is a good example for
implementing GRIP’s solution to developing
countries.
• Improved risk information is fundamental to
support sound policy/decision making processes
in China.
