There are many people in other countries and even in our own land who
preach to the world the pleasures obtainable here and the means of securing
them. Those teachings have only the effect of increasing our desires and adding
more unrest to our minds. If once we begin to widen the range of our desires, it
will not suffice even if we obtain all the things available in the world. We
still want more and more anf cover the thingd in other spheres of experiances.
Ordinarily, people think it happiness to have wives, children, friends and so on
and to possess wealth in abundance. Do we not, however, see everyday persons who
have none these and are yet happy? Even an emperor who rules over the entire
earth cannot escape painful experiances. Hiranygarbha, the First-Born, is
himself said to have been threatened by two Asuras, Madhu and Kaitabha. As all
emboidment is due to an admixture of good and bad actions in varying degrees, it
is impossible to escape the alternation of pain and pleasure as long as there is
any emboidment.

It may be possible in the field of politics or other secular sphere to
10. make a mass appeal to a crowd and to try to move it by rhetoric and influnece
its thoughts, but it is quite ineffective in the region of spiritual endeavour.
We can gather together hundreds of people to drag a temple car. If, however, we
are hungary, there is no meaning in gathering a crowd. Each one of us must
individually exert himself to have his hunger appeased. Simlilarly, those that
are spiritually hungary must seek the help of somebody who can point out the way
for each man to have his individual hunger appeased. It is meaningless also to
get together large crowd of people who are not hungary at all and to teach them
way to get rid of hunger. Our Sastras insist, therefore, that no teaching should
be given to anybody who does not earnestly ask for it. It is thus only proper
that each aspirant should himself strive to know the means suited to the nature
and intensity of his own spirirtual hunger and suited to his completency to
pursue them properly and then make earnest effort to practise those means till
fruition.

Every duty in holy, and devotion to duty is the highest form of the
worship of God. By doing well the duty which is nearest to us, the duty which is
in our hands now, we make ourselves stronger; and improving our strength in this
manner, step by step, we may even reach a state in which it shall be our
privilage to do the most coveted and honoured duties in life society.
Duty of any kind is not to be slighted. A man who does the lower work is not for
that reason only lower man than he does the higher work. A man should not be
judged by the nature of his duties, but by the manner in which he does them.

Will you consider a man as educated if only he can pass some examination
and dleiver good lectures? The education which does not help the common mass of
people to equip themselves for the struggle for life, which does not bring our
strength of character, a spirit of philanthropy and the courage of lion, is it
worth the name? Real education that you are recieving now in schools and
colleges is only making you a race of dyspeptics. You are working like machines
merely and living jellyfish existance.
To me the very essence of education is concenteration of mind and not the
collecting of facts. If I had to do my education, over again, and had any voice
in the matter, I would not study facts at all. I would develop the power of
concenteration and detechment; and then with this perfect instrument I would
collect facts at will.
