Fundación Banco Santander presenta la ex-
posición All the World’s a Stage. Works from
corrientes dominantes y adquiriendo obras
Fundación Banco Santander presents the
exhibition All the World’s a Stage. Works
from the Goetz Collection at the Santander
Art Gallery, an engaging dialogue between
contemporary art and the performing
arts played out in one of the world’s most
important private collections.
When Ingvild Goetz started her collection
in the late 1980s, she chose to ignore
prevailing trends and instead focused on
acquiring works by artists who moved on
the fringe of the art scene. The collection
found a permanent home in 1993, when the
museum designed by the architects Herzog
& De Meuron opened its doors in Munich.
Today the Goetz Collection comprises over
5,000 works, with examples of nearly every
artistic genre.
In his comedy As You Like It (1599),
Shakespeare wrote, “All the world’s a stage,
and all the men and women merely players.”
These verses inspired curator Karsten
Löckemann’s thematic focus in this show,
which draws viewers into the world of the
theatre and its unique aesthetics, stories
and strategies. Since time immemorial,
theatre and the performing arts have held
a powerful allure for visual artists, and the
pieces in this exhibition were carefully
chosen from among the thousands in the
Goetz Collection to eloquently illustrate
how the stage has influenced the “fine arts”.
Shining a spotlight on major international
collections of contemporary art, supporting
collectors and artists, and promoting art
education is part of Fundación Banco
Santander’s special commitment to the arts.
Consequently, workshop-tours for families,
schools and visitors with cognitive diversity
will also be offered in conjunction with this
exhibition.

MATTHEW BARNEY
Nació en 1967 en San Francisco. Vive y trabaja en Nueva York
Born in 1967 in San Francisco. He lives and works in New York
The Cremaster Cycle (1994-2002), whose outlandish characters made
their debut at the beginning of what was dubbed the Genome Era, has
become a 90s icon.
The series is an ambitious project that synthesises different visual
universes and thrusts their materialities into the limelight. It is broken
down into five parts, but the cycle should be viewed as a total work of
art and science-fiction epic. It explores the themes of the body, sport,
sexuality, architecture, biomorphic alterations, American culture, Greek
and Celtic legends, television and advertising, translating its sources
into a subjective mythology. The contents are completely disjointed
and can only be understood if we view them as the articulation of an
abstract oscillation between the creation and destruction of form.
Cremaster 5, shot in Hungary and set to an elegiac score composed
by Jonathan Bepler, unfolds on different stages—the Hungarian State
Opera House and the Chain Bridge in Budapest, and the Gellért Spa and
surrounding woods—and focuses on themes such as decadence, decline
and fall, and farewells, all within the confines of Barney’s own particular
artistic universe, as closed and enigmatic as the artist himself.

CANDICE BREITZ
Nació en 1972 en Johannesburgo. Vive y trabaja en Berlín
Born in 1972 in Johannesburg. She lives and works in Berlin
The artist Candice Breitz has worked with moving images since the
late 1990s. The piece chosen for this exhibition is her video installation
Becoming (2003), a title inspired by the eponymous MTV show that
featured teens imitating music videos by famous pop stars.
The work consists of seven pairs of monitors standing back-
to-back on pedestals. The monitors on one side show scenes from
American romantic comedies filmed in colour, featuring Cameron
Diaz, Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Lopez, Julia Roberts, Meg Ryan, Neve
Campbell and Reese Witherspoon. Each scene, barely one second long,
corresponds to an exciting or poignant moment in the film. Meanwhile,
the monitors on the other side show Breitz acting out the same
sequences in black and white. The monitors on both sides have the
same soundtrack as the original movie.
This piece draws a critical, thought-provoking comparison between
the exaggerated, artificial scenes that Hollywood offers and everyday
reality, represented by Breitz’s performance. With this work, the artist
strives to draw attention to the predominantly superficial, stereotypical
portrayal of women by the mass media and pop culture that hold such
sway over our society.
JANET CARDIFF & GEORGE BURES MILLER
Janet Cardiff nació en 1957 en Brussels (Canadá)
George Bures Miller nació en 1960 en Vegreville (Canadá)
Viven y trabajan en Berlín y Grindrod (Canadá)
Janet Cardiff was born in 1957 in Brussels (Canada)
George Bures Miller was born in 1960 in Vegreville (Canada)
They both live and work in Berlin and Grindrod (Canada)
Janet Cardiff & George Bures Miller are known for creating installation
art that requires the active involvement of spectators, making them a
determining factor in every piece. They design each work for a specific
space, accompanied by audio or video material to create an illusory,
markedly oneiric atmosphere.
In Playhouse (1997), each visitor is given a headset before passing
through a curtain to enter the installation. Inside the person sits on a
chair, the only guest in a small, closed space that replicates the feeling
of sitting alone in a private box at the opera. The spectator is seamlessly
integrated into the scene, surrounded by the fictional ambient noise of
many different voices, both far and near, heard through the headset,
creating an utterly fanciful yet fully engrossing ambiance.

STAN DOUGLAS
Born in 1960 in Vancouver, where he lives and works
monumental Abbott & Cordova, 7 August 1971 (2008).
Stan Douglas is recognised as part of the Vancouver School of
photoconceptualists, and his artistic output ranges from sophisticated
film and video pieces to large-format photographs.
Michigan Theatre (1997-1998) is a work from the Detroit Photos
series, a melancholy look at the decline of this once-prosperous
American city from a documentary perspective. The building shown in
this piece is an old theatre now used as a car park.
Douglas’s historical and cultural interests are also palpable in his
latest series such as Crowds and Riots, which includes the monumental
Abbott & Cordova, 7 August 1971 (2008). In it we see the recreation of
a clash between police and a group of hippies staging a street protest
to legalise marijuana. The work is actually a composite of 50 different
photographs, taken from the same position and assembled in a process
of staggering technical complexity to create a coherent whole.

Ingar Dragset nació en 1969 en Trondheim (Noruega).

Michael Elmgreen was born in 1961 in Copenhagen.
He lives and works in London and Berlin
Ingar Dragset was born in 1969 in Trondheim (Norway).
He lives and works in Berlin
Go Go Go!
The Scandinavian art duo Elmgreen & Dragset is one of the most
important icons of the international art scene. Both artists share
Shakespeare’s vision of the world as a stage and of their audience as
players moving among its props.
Many of their theatrical-performative installations, created using an
interdisciplinary working method, are like stage sets that present
hyperbolic replicas of everyday settings as reflections of social reality.
Go Go Go! (2005) portrays a deserted dance floor that raises many
questions in the spectator’s mind. It can also be interpreted as a tribute
to the deceased conceptual artist Félix González-Torres, whose 1991
performance Untitled (Go-Go Dancing Platform) took the art world by
storm.
In Last Performance (2009) the duo created an empty dressing
room with a noose hanging from the ceiling, a withered rose and a
clown’s nose, suggesting the two sides of the theatre mask, comedy
and tragedy. At the same time, this work also symbolises the glory and
failure, applause and loneliness of real life.

HANS-PETER FELDMANN
Born in 1941 in Düsseldorf, where he lives and works
quién el narrador. Es sencillo pensar en la alegoría platónica de la caverna;
The work of Hans-Peter Feldmann explores fundamental issues of
human existence, but it also takes a close look at the mechanisms of the
art market, which he infiltrates with such deliberate determination that
he even refuses to date or sign his pieces.
Feldmann bases his work on ordinary objects, indifferent to whether
the components he uses were made by him or someone else. The
installation Schatten (2005) consists of a long wooden plank resting
on trestle supports. On this surface, different figures placed on five
revolving platforms are illuminated by lamps made by the artist himself,
casting static and shifting shadows on the wall behind them. In this
strange procession reminiscent of shadow theatre and magic lantern
shows, it is hard to tell if the viewer is in front of or behind the stage,
and who is the actor and who the narrator. Plato’s Allegory of the Cave
immediately springs to mind; spectators must be open to the possibility
that there is something more than what meets the eye.
NAN GOLDIN
Nació en 1953 en Washington, D. C. Vive y trabaja en Nueva York
Born in 1953 in Washington, D.C. She lives and works in New York
mundo.
Fotografías como Cody in the Dressing Room at the Boy Bar, NYC (1991)
Nan Goldin’s photographs primarily focus on themes related to
sexuality, love and violence. As a teenager she fell in love with a drag
queen and spent two years living with her and another female friend,
a period in which she began to explore this exciting, fascinating world
with her camera.
Photos like Cody in the Dressing Room at the Boy Bar, NYC (1991)
and C as Madonna, Bangkok (1992) reveal Goldin’s fascination with
everything that defies bourgeois conceptions of sexuality and gender.
The artist has also photographed the harsher side of life: in
the 1980s she created a series entitled The Cookie Portfolio that
documented the life and death of her friend Cookie Mueller, an actress
and writer who was struck down by AIDS. However, Goldin does
not aim to inspire compassion, offend or accuse anyone with her
photographs. She merely uses them to capture, from a highly personal
angle, a world that was once her own: “I want to show exactly what my
world looks like, without glamorization, without glorification.”

ASTA GRÖTING
Nació en 1961 en Herford (Alemania). Vive y trabaja en Berlín
Born in 1961 in Herford (Germany). She lives and works in Berlin
After dissecting the human anatomy in her early sculptures, Asta
Gröting went on to explore the human voice in her video project Die
innere Stimme, which she worked on from 1993 to 2004, where we see
a ventriloquist chatting with a dummy.
Gröting draws literary references from various sources, such as
Shakespeare’s Macbeth, who believed the voices in his head were
ghosts. The ventriloquist speaks in two different voices and a third
comes from another person, making it difficult to tell whether they are
inner or outer voices and even causing us to wonder if the three voices
can hear each other. Versions of this piece have been made in several
different languages—always using the same dummy, the artist’s own
creation—and a short film by the same title was released in 2002.
In her oeuvre, Gröting explores themes such as inner conflicts and
dilemmas, interpersonal relationships, friendship, happiness and love,
but she also shines a spotlight on inner doubts and the fear of facing
work, loss and death.
RODNEY GRAHAM
Nació en 1949 en Abbotsford (Canadá). Vive y trabaja en Vancouver
Born in 1949 in Abbotsford (Canada). He lives and works in Vancouver
a toda atribución estilística.
En Allegory of Folly: Study for an Equestrian
Monument in the Form of a Wind Vane (2005), aparece inmerso en la
Rodney Graham’s oeuvre is rooted in the strong theoretical influences
of Vancouver’s conceptual art scene, which emerged in the 1970s and
was spearheaded by Ian Wallace and Jeff Wall, but Graham’s style differs
from theirs in several important ways. The sheer diversity of media that
Graham uses and the myriad themes he explores defy any attempt at
stylistic classification. Graham has tapped the potential of photography
and film, painting and printmaking, video, installation, literature and music.
In the 1990s, the artist began to make increasingly frequent
appearances in his own work. In Allegory of Folly: Study for an
Equestrian Monument in the Form of a Wind Vane (2005), we see him
engrossed in a book, sitting backwards on a mechanical horse like those
used to train jockeys. In several ways, the work is closely linked to Hans
Holbein’s portrait of Erasmus of Rotterdam, painted in 1525. Even the
title is a nod to Erasmus’s highly controversial book, In Praise of Folly;
yet instead of this tome, Graham holds the Vancouver telephone book
in a highly humorous, satirical composition.
The light box Dance!!!!! (2008) shows a typical Wild West saloon
scene where the character played by Graham is forced to dance at
gunpoint, offering us yet another ridiculous, melancholy vision.

LOTHAR HEMPEL
Nació en 1966 en Colonia. Vive y trabaja en Berlín
Born in 1966 in Cologne. He lives and works in Berlin
The installation Die schwarze Stunde (2004) by artist Lothar Hempel
is a combination of architecture, three-dimensional space, set design
and painting based on conventional filmmaking and theatre techniques.
As the collector Ingvild Goetz has noted, “Hempel’s stage-set-style
installations draw viewers in as actors […]. An event is recorded, figures
are frozen in it, and we are forced to continue the stories for ourselves”.
The images used in Hempel’s works are taken from reviews of films,
dance performances and plays that he finds in different publications.
The basis for this piece was an article in a 1959 theatre magazine about
the performance of Maxim Gorky’s Summerfolk at the Deutsches
Theater in Berlin. The play, set in the early 20th century, is about three
bourgeois couples who struggle with issues such as marital problems,
tedium and the sense that their lives are stuck in a rut.
CANDIDA HÖFER
Nació en 1944 en Eberswalde (Alemania). Vive y trabaja en Colonia
Born in 1944 in Eberswalde (Germany). She lives and works in Cologne
Candida Höfer is one of the leading exponents of contemporary
photography. Strongly influenced by Bernd Becher’, Höfer inherited her
teacher’s conceptual aesthetic and is best known for her large-format
colour photographs of the interiors of vacant public buildings. Her
photos evince an almost ethnographic interest in emblematic spaces of
contemporary culture with strong artistic and social connotations, such
as opera houses and theatres, libraries, museums and exhibition halls,
palaces and ceremonial halls.
Théâtre Municipal Calais I (2001) shows the empty interior of a
theatre that opened in 1903. The image’s perspective focuses our
attention on the floor seats, situating us in the place of the absent actor
looking out onto an equally absent audience.
In Villa Stuck München I (2005) we see the wall of the music room
at Villa Stuck, once the home of Franz von Stuck (1863-1928), whose
multidisciplinary artistic talent earned him the sobriquet of “prince of
artists”.
Höfer’s photographs raise questions about the architecture they
depict. When and for whom was the space created? Who moves through
it? Who uses it? What is unique about the space and how it is staged?

MIKE KELLEY
Nació en 1954 en Wayne (Estados Unidos).
Murió en 2012 en South Pasadena (Estados Unidos)
Born in 1954 in Wayne (United States).
He died in 2012 in South Pasadena (United States)
Only after Mike Kelley’s untimely demise in 2012 did it finally seem
possible to review his vast, prolific output and see his often complex,
chaotic art for what it is: an insightful, incomparably influential body
of work.
Sin, suffering, violence and humiliation are at the heart of his artistic
production which, with its punk overtones, seems determined to drag
the “good taste” of modern art to the disreputable fringes of American
culture.
The series Extracurricular Activity Projective Reconstruction,
which includes Lonely Vampire (2005) and Joseph Supplicates
(2005), comprises 365 videos and installations based on his sculpture
Educational Complex, in which he reconstructed the architecture of
every educational institution he ever attended. The buildings’ empty
spaces were marked as places of personal abuse in reference to the pop
psychology theory of repressed memory syndrome, which sustains that
highly traumatic experiences tend to be forgotten or buried.
MICHAEL KUNZE
Nació en 1961 en Múnich. Vive y trabaja en Berlín
Born in 1961 in Munich. He lives and works in Berlin
On the German art scene, Michael Kunze is known for the unusual
quality of both his painting style and his subjects, creating mysterious
compositions in which he explores reality and the subconscious.
Vormittag (1992-1995) is a large-format triptych structured using
the classic central perspective, in which we see 24 fantastic figures that
blend in with their surroundings and seem to be hovering in mid-air.
As a whole, the composition of this piece harks back to Bosch’s trip-
tychs, while the architectural setting is reminiscent of the work of Italian
painter Veronese and artists like De Chirico and Magritte. In fact, Kunze
underscores these sources of inspiration by writing the names of great
painters from the Renaissance to the present day on different archi-
tectural elements: Bosch, Giorgio de Chirico, Veronese, René Magritte,
Tiepolo, Albrecht Altdorfer, Gerhard Richter and Anselm Kiefer, among
others. Kunze’s paintings often contain references to philosophy, litera-
ture, cinema and classic art history.

ZILLA LEUTENEGGER
Born in 1968 in Zurich, where she lives and works
Zilla Leutenegger combines drawing, sculpture, photography,
projections, sound and light in her oeuvre, and the artist almost always
appears in her works, which revolve around herself.
Both her sculptures and her digitally processed moving images cast
a powerful spell over spectators, inviting them to give their fantasies
free rein and elaborate on them.
In Rondo (2008) the themes of time, movement and solitude are
powerfully present. This video installation consists of one projection
and three objects. The artist’s own shadow is projected onto the white
wall, and in front of it we see a platform with an open grand piano
and a bench. Her playful use of perspective causes the shadows to
intermingle, overlap or appear side by side. During the seven-minute
loop Leutenegger performs several pieces, pauses and resumes playing,
and each time the soundtrack ends it starts over again, imitating the
type of musical piece known as a rondo or rondeau.
JONATHAN MEESE
Nació en 1970 en Tokio. Vive y trabaja en Berlín y Ahrensburg (Alemania)
Born in 1970 in Tokyo. He lives and works in Berlin and Ahrensburg (Germany)
escultura, instalaciones, videoarte, performances y producciones teatrales.
Soldier of Fortune «Iwan», Flash Gordon (todas de 2003), Schnabel Luigi
im Zirkulationsnebel, General «Hybrisis» y General Pony (de 2007). Todas
Jonathan Meese is one of the most sought-after German artists of his
generation. His oeuvre is provocative and varied, ranging from painting,
drawing and sculpture to installations, video art, performances and
theatre productions.
One of the pillars of his work, which often champions a cause, is
the creation of a “radical alternative world” that offers a way out of our
civilisation, whose rules, dictates and lies seem to thwart any attempt
at escape.
For Meese, the struggle for the independence of art is always a
struggle for the work’s independence from the artist. He believes that
artists should be guided by instinct, resisting the urge to impose their
own intentionality.
This show includes six bronze sculptures by the artist: Widder,
Soldier of Fortune “Iwan”, Flash Gordon (all from 2003), Schnabel Luigi
im Zirkulationsnebel, General “Hybrisis” and General Pony (from 2007).
They all pertain to a series he began working on in 2003, thematically
inspired by fantastic creatures, video games and comic books. These
sculptures oscillate between figuration and abstraction and are
characterised by an attitude of wild abandon.

HANS OP DE BEECK
Nació en 1969 Turnhout (Bélgica). Vive y trabaja en Bruselas
Born in 1969 in Turnhout (Belgium). He lives and works in Brussels
The artist Hans Op de Beeck uses a variety of artistic disciplines, such
as architecture, film, design and the visual arts, to create enormous
staged scenarios, like sets for an as-yet unwritten play, which visitors
can walk through. These set designs conjure up memories of typical
childhood situations or movie scenes.
According to the artist, “The works are a commentary on our
tragicomic human condition as well as on how we manipulate, on
both a large and small scale, our habitat like a stage set, and how we
seek, within this anthropomorphized environment, to avert our own
irrelevance and mortality with rituals and habits”.
In Staging Silence (2) (2013), a film set to electronic music by
the British composer Scanner, two pairs of hands work on a surface
measuring roughly one metre square, building and rebuilding various
sets using ordinary objects like water bottles and sugar cubes. As Op
de Beeck explains, “The title refers to the staging of such dormant
decors where, in the absence of people, the spectator can project
himself as the lone protagonist.”
ULRIKE OTTINGER
Nació en 1942 en Constanza (Alemania). Vive y trabaja en Berlín
Born in 1942 in Konstanz (Germany). She lives and works in Berlin
In the course of her long career, Ulrike Ottinger has explored myriad
themes and an amazingly diverse range of expressive media. She is
a painter, etcher, photographer, film-maker and opera and play set
designer.
In the field of cinema, she has written scripts, directed and produced
many of her own feature-length films, which often focus on marginal
characters. This is true of her “Berlin trilogy”, one part of which is Freak
Orlando (1981), where the main character Orlando takes a journey
through history in five chapters and on the way changes his gender. The
exhibition includes eight photographs based on this film.
The show also presents two other films by Ottinger, Superbia:
Der Stolz (1986), an allegory of the seven deadly sins, and Ester: Ein
Purimspiel in Berlin (2002), a parable about putting down roots in a
foreign country, as well as the documentary black-and-white photos she
took while travelling through China in 1985.

PAUL PFEIFFER
Nació en 1966 en Honolulú (Estados Unidos). Vive y trabaja en Nueva York
Born in 1966 in Honolulu (United States). He lives and works in New York
In the course of his career Paul Pfeiffer has repeatedly assessed the
documentary value of media images of sporting events. This explains
his interest in Wembley Stadium, a venue famous for hosting, among
other events, the 1966 World Cup final between England and Germany.
The legendary “Wembley goal” that swept England to victory,
even though it was never certain that the ball had actually crossed
the line, was the premise of Pfeiffer’s exhibition The Saints held at the
Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin in 2009. The centrepiece of that show
was the massive installation Vitruvian Figure (2009), a full-scale replica
of a section of the old stadium’s curved seating area.
The title alludes to the proportions of the human body as depicted
by Leonardo da Vinci in his famous drawing called The Vitruvian Man
(1492), based on the teachings of the Roman architect Vitruvius. The
question of how architecture influences the emotional construction of
human beings had already been explored by Pfeiffer in his previous
work.
MARKUS SCHINWALD
Nació en 1973 en Salzburgo. Vive y trabaja en Nueva York y Viena
Born in 1973 in Salzburg. He lives and works in New York and Vienna
Le in-
In his work, multidisciplinary artist Markus Schinwald frequently focuses
his attention on the human figure and its architectural and cultural
context. He is primarily interested in the psychological aspects of
humanity, and his figures are quasi-surrealistic.
To create his paintings, Schinwald purchases old pictures from the
19th and early 20th centuries and retouches them, adding prostheses,
straps and jewellery rendered so flawlessly that it is impossible to tell
them apart from the original elements.
The artist’s works are usually integrated into their surroundings as
installations, giving the portrayed subjects a stage of their own and
situating paintings and sculptures on spatial elements provided for the
occasion—walls, pedestals, overhangs, etc.—or suspended from the
ceiling, as with his sculptures Albert (2008) and Hans (2009).
Three carbon prints from his oeuvre have been included in the show:
Diego (2008), Sri (2008) and Neil (2010). In these digitally altered
copies of vintage 19th-century photographs, it is also difficult to tell
what is original and what was added.

LAURIE SIMMONS
Nació en 1949 en Long Island (Estados Unidos). Vive y trabaja en Nueva York
Born in 1949 in Long Island (United States). She lives and works in New York
Since the 1970s, artist Laurie Simmons has developed a photographic
oeuvre devoted to the mise-en-scène of the world of dolls. Doll
houses and artificial spaces are the stages on which she positions her
characters, which become the mirror image of our daily lives. This
unusual approach gives rise to poetic and occasionally grotesque
images and situations that are often reminiscent of cinematography.
The series Walking Objects from the late 1980s presents various
objects to which Simmons has surrealistically appended legs. Doll
houses, hourglasses and pocket watches inevitably remind us of certain
episodes from Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland.
In her first film, The Music of Regret (2006), she continued to
explore the themes addressed in her earlier work. This musical is
conceived as a total work of art and is divided into three acts, each
featuring different characters. The figures seem to come to life and end
up lamenting past mistakes and missed opportunities in an incoherent
narrative composition. Simmons did the editing and production and
wrote the songs, and she enlisted the aid of numerous personalities
from the world of art, theatre and film, including the actress Meryl
Streep, who plays the artist in the second act.
HIROSHI SUGIMOTO
Nació en 1948 en Tokio. Vive y trabaja en Nueva York
Born in 1948 in Tokyo. He lives and works in New York
Hiroshi Sugimoto is one of the most prestigious Japanese
photographers working today. Japanese culture and philosophy are
powerfully present in his small black-and-white photographs, which
also testify to the influence of American minimal and conceptual art.
His creations do not conform to the conventions of contemporary
photography, thanks in part to an almost contemplative reductionism
that makes his photos seem to hover on the edge of the temporal
dimension and raises questions in the spectator’s mind.
Sugimoto remains loyal to traditional analogue photography,
refusing to venture into the world of digital images. He uses a large-
format camera from the late 19th century, opening the shutter by hand
and letting intuition dictate the exposure time, which allows him to
achieve very subtle greyscale nuances and a sharp clarity of detail.
The Theaters series comprises snapshots of cinemas and drive-
in theatres—mostly American and a few European—which he
photographed between 1975 and 2001. The photographs show empty
spaces where neither the audience nor the film being projected is
visible. Instead, we see a blank screen whose luminous white surface
contrasts with the darkness of the room. Sugimoto offers us mysterious,
highly enigmatic photographs tinged with melancholy and nostalgia.

CATHERINE SULLIVAN
Nació en 1968 en Los Ángeles. Vive y trabaja en Chicago
Born in 1968 in Los Angeles. She lives and works in Chicago
siciones coreográficas experimentales y escenas fragmentarias carentes
Catherine Sullivan started out as a drama student, and this background
has powerfully influenced her entire oeuvre. Her video installations
operate at the intersection of theatre, performance, dance, film and the
visual arts, pushing the boundaries of the dramatic stage into the realm
of the plastic arts and cinema.
In Big Hunt (2002), five projections cover the wall to create five
relatively large visual settings that replicate a stage. The title alludes
to the concept of “big game hunting”, a term used by Sullivan’s acting
teacher to refer to physically or mentally demanding roles.
The material that forms the basis of the installation consists of
clips from films featuring “dysfunctional” characters (The Miracle
Worker, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?, Persona, Marat/Sade and
Tim), as Sullivan operates on the premise that an actor’s mastery of
self-transformation can be underscored and “demonstrated through
the mental or physical afflictions of the character they play”. With the
characters from these movies, Sullivan constructs different experimental
choreographies and disjointed scenes entirely lacking a linear narrative.
The absence of voices emphasises the conflict of these characters,
letting their body language take the place of spoken dialogue.
HIROSHI SUGITO
Born in 1970 in Nagoya (Japan), where he lives and works
Tanto en bird man (1998) como en in the freezer (1998),
Hiroshi Sugito’s work combines his Japanese heritage with the Western
style he discovered as a boy, when his family spent 10 years in the
United States before returning to Japan. An alien in his own country,
unable to speak or write Japanese, he made painting his vehicle of
expression and studied Nihonga, a blend of Japanese tradition and
Western painting.
The spaces Sugito creates in his pictures resemble frozen episodes
of a story. In both bird man (1998) and in the freezer (1998), the
perspective tells us nothing about the size of the elements appearing in
the paintings—in this case, a bird man and an aeroplane. The curtains,
a recurring device in his oeuvre, lend the compositions a markedly
theatrical feel, reminding us of Renaissance and Baroque drama.
Sometimes his pieces are not named until they are put on display,
and the titles therefore have nothing to do with what we see, yet the
contradictory feeling this elicits in viewers is precisely what Sugito aims
to achieve. “Every person has a different life or story [...]. But if I, as an
artist, erase myself and leave a little gesture for the viewers to make
their own story, then that is more real than showing my own reality as I
feel it.”

ROSEMARIE TROCKEL
Nació en 1952 en Schwerte (Alemania). Vive y trabaja en Colonia
Born in 1952 in Schwerte (Germany). She lives and works in Cologne
concluyente.
The prolific and varied oeuvre of Rosemarie Trockel is remarkable not
only for the diversity of media used but also for its profound message.
A multidisciplinary artist with a markedly conceptual, expressive,
surrealistic style, her work can be described as feminist art, although
this label does not really do justice to the complex range of themes she
addresses.
The series Manus Spleen, enveloped in an aura of mystery, consists
of several films featuring an eccentric character named Manu who
experience wild mood swings, shifting from hysteria to melancholy and
from rage to sadness.
The work Manus Spleen IV (2002) references Bertolt Brecht’s play
Mother Courage and Her Children (1939), about a canteen woman who
attempts to profit from war and loses her three children in the process.
However, while Brecht’s play is a moralising tale of war, Trockel’s work
refuses to take a conclusive moral stance.
JEFF WALL
Born in 1946 in Vancouver, where he lives and works
Many of Jeff Wall’s creations emulate the colouring, composition and
construction of artists like Eugène Delacroix, Édouard Manet and Edgar
Degas.
This influence is very apparent in Restoration (1993), a large-
format transparency in a light box that shows two female art restorers
working on Édouard Castres’s circular composition Bourbaki Panorama,
completed in 1881, which depicts the French army under the command
of General Bourbaki crossing into Switzerland. The protagonists are not
the Swiss heroes who came to the aid of the exhausted French soldiers
fleeing from the German troops, but the restorers whose efforts ensure
that the piece will stand the test of time, serving as a bridge between
the past, present and future.
In Doorpusher (1984) and Jell-O (1995), Wall leaves many questions
unanswered. Although the subjects are perfectly ordinary, they weave
a silent, mysterious magic spell. Wall’s photographs tell stories without
being overly loquacious, and in this sense they are more like stills from a
film whose script must be fleshed out by the audience.

JOHANNES WOHNSEIFER
Nació en 1967 en Colonia. Vive y trabaja en Colonia y Erfstadt (Alemania)
Born in 1967 in Cologne He lives and works in Cologne and Erftstadt (Germany)
Through the Green Door (2007), presenta una puerta de madera pinta-
contexto expositivo. En The Porn Identity.
Johannes Wohnseifer created his first conceptual work of art when he
was just 16 years old. Today, in addition to conceptual paintings and
sculptures, he produces installations and videos. His oeuvre consistently
revolves around an intense dialogue with superficial, stereotypical
images taken from everyday life and staged in “mass-media” style.
In Through the Green Door (2007) we see a wooden door painted
green with lettering that reads “Department of Psychosomatic Medicine
and Psychotherapy. Forensic Psychotherapy Section”. The door hangs
from a 30 cm-deep stainless steel frame and the handle is smeared with
Vaseline. When visitors see their own reflection in the frame, it triggers
a process of introspection, launching them on a quest for personal
identity and an exploration and analysis of the ego.
The work was first created in 1996 as a nod to the American porn
film Behind the Green Door, and in subsequent showings it has been
modified to suit each new exhibition venue. In The Porn Identity:
Expeditionen in die Dunkelzone (Kunsthalle Wien, 2009), the door was
left ajar, allowing spectators to peer through the frame and glimpse
a television showing porn films. The Vaseline on the door handle still
retains its pornographic connotations today.
MATTHIAS WEISCHER
Nació en 1973 en Elte (Alemania). Vive y trabaja en Leipzig
Born in 1973 in Elte (Germany). He lives and works in Leipzig
Many of Matthias Weischer’s works feature whimsically furnished
interiors and unfamiliar, almost surrealistic visual universes with a
paucity of human presence. The frequently overwhelming profusion
of pictorial details tends to confuse spectators, creating the illusion
of palpable materiality. Weischer creates spaces with a theatrical
appearance where he plays with the multiple possibilities afforded by
painting.
Sometimes his canvases remind us of ancient frescoes ravaged by
the passage of time, and in other cases they resemble collages, as he
often paints various layers which he later exposes in certain areas. His
interiors reveal memories of the past and occasionally refer to places
from his childhood, spent on the plain of Münster in Westphalia.
In Cutout Girl (2005), one of his nostalgic interiors, we see a faceless
female figure that does not seem to belong to this world, presenting
viewers with a plethora of unknown factors. In Treppchen (2006),
Weischer’s passion for decorating, drawings, perspective and collage is
even more explicit. Combining different pictorial techniques, he seems
to test the limits of his ability as a painter, mixing various genres and
demonstrating the enormous potential of painting.
