he 2008 NCAA Division II National Wrestling
Championships will be hosted by Upper Iowa
University on March 14-15 in Cedar Rapids,
Iowa.
The University of Central Oklahoma, coached
by David James, is the defending team champion.
One of the most successful coaches in the nation, regardless
of division or classification, James’ Bronchos have captured
an amazing 12 national championship titles while compiling
an extraordinary 239-28 dual meet record against NAIA,
NCAAII, and NCAADivision III competition. Now entering
his 26th year as head coach, James has coached 44 individual
national champions, 153 All-Americans, and has been hon-
ored as National Coach of the Year on seven occasions. James
also excelled as a wrestler at UCO, claiming two national
championships and earning All-American honors four
times. This year’s squad will be led by NCAA champion
Kyle Evans (141), All-Americans Tyler Zukerman (125),
Jason Leavitt (157), and Heath Jolley (184), and NCAA qual-
ifier Daniel Morrison (165). Three former National Junior
College All-Americans looking to provide some additional
firepower are Luke Elmore (149), Paul Mayfield (157), and
Tommy McCarthy (174). Other wrestlers with valuable col-
lege experience include Michael Walkup (133), Brandon
Shelton (141), Dale McClure (141), Brent Sarette (149), Colby
Robinson (149), Cody Rowell (165), Kelson Phillips (165),
Alvin Metcalf (165), Zach Sikes (165), Kenny Meredith (174),
Jarrett Edison (197), Reggie Douglas (197), and Dustin Finn
(285). Four high-profile incoming freshmen are Oklahoma
state champions Trey Branscum (133), Shawn Ledford (133),
Kelly Henderson (157), and Braden Land (285).
Under the tutelage of Head Coach Marc Bauer, the
University of Nebraska-Kearney has established itself as one
of the nation’s premier programs both academically and ath-
letically. Since taking over the Loper program prior to the
1999-2000 season, Bauer has led UNK to seven top 10 finish-
es at the NCAA Championships – including national runner-
up finishes in 2003, 2006, and 2007, two NWCA/Cliff Keen
Duals Championships, produced 41 All-Americans and six
national champions, and mentored numerous Academic All-
Americans. A strong nucleus returns led by NCAA champi-
ons Brett Allgood (133) and Tervel Dlagnev (285), and All-
Americans Jeff Rutledge (141), Joe Ellenberger (157), Taylor
May (165), Matt Farrell (184), and Kelsey Empting (197).
Three transfer students looking to provide significant contri-
butions are Joey Morrison (125), Kamarudeen Usman (174),
and Willie Weber (285). Other experienced grapplers include
Michael Abril (125), Cody Lambotte (149), Ryan Etherton
(149), Keenan McCurdy (165), Paul Sutton (174), and Derek
Ross (184). Six exciting incoming freshmen are Kansas state
champions Brett Swoyer (133) and Jordan Geinger (149),
two-time Nebraska state placer Nate High (141), Colorado
state champions Ross Brunkhardt (157) and Nick Bauman
(184), and Nebraska state champion Cory Steiger (174).
The University of Nebraska-Omaha, coached by Mike
Denney, will look to regain the national championship that
eluded them last year after three consecutive titles. One of the
most respected coaches in the nation, regardless of division or
classification, Denney’s Mavericks have firmly established
themselves as a premier program that is recognized for its
achievements both on and off the mat. Denney brings in an
impressive 267-106-5 dual meet record into the new season
and has coached 26 national champions and 151 Division II
All-Americans. This year’s squad welcomes back NCAA
champions Cody Garcia (125) and Todd Meneely (149), All-
Americans Sim Bribiesca (141), Ross Taplin (174), and Austin
Boehm (184), and NCAA qualifiers Jeff Rau (133), Nick
Edmonds (184), Jacob Marrs (197), and Tony Lewis (285). An

Head Coach Jason Ramstetter has brought the Adams State
College wrestling program to national prominence since he took
over the Grizzlies program nine years ago. His teams have fin-
ished in the top 10 at the NCAA Division II Championships in
each of the last five seasons. This year’s edition of the Green &
White will be led by NCAA champion Jared Deaugero (184), All-
Americans Arsenia Barksdale (125), Raymond Dunning (133),
Joey Deaugero (141), and Evan Copeland (165), and NCAA qual-
ifier Mike Gallegos (157). An outstanding redshirt freshman des-
tined for stardom is Colorado state champion Josh Hensley (149).
Ahost of additional returning team members will battle for start-
ing spots. They include Reuben Gutierrez (125), Kevin Schmidt
(133), Nick Dionisio (141), A.J. Alexander (141), Noomis Jones
(149), Omar Gonzales (149), Dan Intlekofer (157), Joe Kelso (157),
Brandon Morris (174), Andre Harris (184), and Jeff Schossow
(285). Top newcomers are Texas state champion Kevin Jury (133),
Colorado state runner-up Jacob Jurney (165), Utah state placer
Collin Backlund (197), and two-time California State
Community College placer Josh Marquez (285).
The traditionally strong Mountain Cats of the University of
Pittsburgh at Johnstown are coming off a 21-5-1 dual meet
record, their 20th Regional Championships, and seventh-place
performance at the National Tournament. Head Coach Pat
Pecora has enjoyed legendary success as his teams have finished
in the top 20 in the nation 24 times and captured NCAA Division
II National Championships titles in 1996 and 1999. He has
tutored 115 All-Americans and 9 individual national champions.
This year’s squad welcomes back All-Americans Derrick Bosso
(125), Brandon Reasy (133), Albert Miles (174), and Mike Corcetti

Head Coach Jim Makovsky enters his 15th season at the helm
of the highly successful Minnesota State-
Mankato wrestling program. Under his
tutelage, the Mavericks have amassed a
fine dual meet record of 173-65-2 and pro-
duced seven national champions and 53
All-Americans. Leading the way this year
are All-Americans Nick Smith (125), Jason
Rhoten (149), Andy Pickar (165), and
Brady Wilson (285). Other highly decorat-
ed performers with previous collegiate

Martin (285), and West Regional placers

Former NCAAchampion Jason Reitmeier is in his 5th season as
head coach of the Augustana College wrestling team. Under his
direction, the Vikings have undergone a revival, leading it back
to the upper echelon of Division II competition and a highly suc-
cessful return to national prominence. This year’s edition of the
Navy & Yellow will be young and inexperienced, but have con-
siderable talent and competitiveness within the squad. A multi-
tude of redshirt freshmen with bright futures are Minnesota state
champions Alex Meger (125), Beau Penk (133), and Nick
Henning (184), Nebraska state champions Jay Sherer (141) and
Kyle Svendsen (165), Minnesota state runners-up Mike Wubbena

this solid program made up of quali-
ty student-athletes. A strong nucleus
returns highlighted by NCAA cham-
pion Brett Hunter (165) and NCAA
runner-up Josh Majerus (197). Other
experienced performers looking to
provide significant contributions
include Devlon Webb (125), Jimmy Savala (133), Brady Shatto
(141), J.J. Pursley (141), Andrew Chrisinger (149), J.D. Thrall

interesting transfer student is California State Junior College

The perennially strong Mountaineers of Western State College
are coming off a 15-7 dual meet record and a 10th-place finish at
the National Tournament. Head Coach Miles Van Hee has
enjoyed a great amount of success as his teams have finished in
the top 20 in the nation in all ten of his seasons at the helm. He
has mentored 4 NCAA champions, 23 All-Americans, and 28
Academic All-Americans. Eight grapplers return with national
experience. They include All-Americans Eddie Lopez (125),
Marques Bravo (133), Camille Dupont (149), Zach Lee (165),
Larry Wilbanks (174), and Charlie Pipher (184), and NCAA qual-
ifiers Chris Freije (149) and Lars Lueders (285). Four exciting red-
shirt freshmen are Colorado state champions Jesse Cruz (133),
Kyle Francis (141), Clayton Weaver (174), and Donovan
McMahill (197). Good things are also expected from returnees
Kyle O’Brien (125), Daren Hockett (133), Tate Lowe (141), Justin

Shawn Nelson is entering his 11th season as head coach of the
University of Findlay wrestling program. A former three-time
Ohio state champion for North Royalton High School, Nelson
continues to keep the Roughnecks as one of the top NCAA
Division II programs in the nation. A powerful core returns high-
lighted by two-time NCAA champion Antonio Guerra (157), All-
American Travis Clark (197), and NCAA qualifier Andy
Zalaiskalns (197). Other key wrestlers with collegiate experience
include Sean Dong (149), Justin Shannon (165), Hiram Smith
(184), Joshua Fox (184), Cody Ruffer (285), and Dan Thoburn
(285). The coaching staff worked diligently to bring in a formi-
dable recruiting class that will provide a foundation for future
success. The renowned class includes Ohio state champions Josh
Falk (141) and Matt Clem (285), Ohio state runners-up Jeremy
Espinoza ((133) and Michael Lybarger (149), Indiana state placers
Nick Wiesjahn (125),and Nathan Scherer (149), and Ohio state
placers Jan Ulinski (133), Derrick Hill (149), and Ross Thatcher
(157).
In four seasons as head coach of the Minnesota State-Moorhead
wrestling program, Keenan Spiess has compiled a 47-22 dual
meet record, captured two Northern Sun Intercollegiate
Conference Championships, produced 2006 NCAA champion
Nate Baker, and has developed national recognition and respect.
The Dragons will look for leadership from All-American Rockie
Stavn (165) and NCAA qualifiers Kelly Janke (141), Troy
McFarland (149), Shane Walton (157), and Tyler Tubbs (184).

The 2007-08 season will mark the 15th year of Ashland
University wrestling under Head Coach Ray Kowatch, an era of
consistently competitive and winning teams. All-American Justin
Ferguson (184) highlights the list of returning wrestlers who also
include NCAA qualifiers Marcus Gordon (149), Josh Ohl (197),
and Dave Crowley (197). Other grapplers with collegiate experi-
ence include Ryan Belcher (125), Yen Truong (125), Jake Bartley
(133), Ray Arnold (133), Kyle Kanaga (141), Nic Albaugh (149),
David Bowman (157), Tony Bradberry (165), Jordan Job (174), and
Ray Kent (285). An elite transfer student with high expectations
is two-time Ohio state runner-up Travis Popham (174). Five
great-looking incoming freshmen with considerable skills are
New York state champion Dan Mandara (125), two-time North
Carolina state champion Brandon Davis (125), Ohio state run-
ners-ups Muhammad Abdur-Rahman (157) and Hunter Reed
(165), and Ohio state placer Frank Read (285).
In seven seasons as head coach at Upper Iowa University,
Heath Grimm has compiled an exceptional 61-22-2 dual meet
record and has mentored 24 national qualifiers, 16 All-
Americans, 3 NCAA champions, and 15 Academic All-
Americans. He has developed a rewarding national reputation
and returns five wrestlers with previous national experience.
They are All-Americans Tyler Mumbulo (125) and Dan Goodson
(285), and NCAA qualifiers Tee Adams (149), Travis Eggers (157),
and Mitch Norton (165). Other experienced performers looking
to provide some big wins include Scott Bergmann (125), Cody
Goble (125), Travell Miller (133), Jacob Pedersen (133), Steven
Baker (141), Jacob Elsbernd (141), Layne Greedy (141), Scott

Newman College wrestling program. During his impressive
tenure as the mentor of the Eagles, Elia has coached 22 national
champions and 76 All-Americans. This year’s squad will be led
by NCAA runner-up Mike Rogers (149) and NCAA qualifiers
Kody Pierson (125) and Kent Pierson (133). Good things are also
expected from returnees Justin Browning (133), Andrew Roberts
(133), Alex Cate (141), Justin Ransom (165), Sherman White (165),
William Campbell (174), Ryan Brock (184), Josh Sprewell (197),

wrestling coach at UW-Parkside for
38 years, where 13 of his wrestlers
have won individual national cham-
pionships. He has served the sport in
many leadership capacities and is rec-
ognized as one of college wrestling’s
greatest ambassadors. Team leaders for
the Rangers this season are NCAA
qualifiers Brandon Kircher (125), Craig
DeGreef (133), Kyle Becker (165), and
Jon Treml (197). Two additional nation-
al-caliber type performers are Corey
Van Groll (174) and Lucas Haag (184).
Other returnees include Cody

Missouri, Robin Ersland has had 59 national qualifiers, 26 All-

and has been honored as the NCAA Division II Midwest Region
Coach of the Year three times. Team leaders for this season are All-
American Jesse Sheets (165) and NCAA qualifier Jeremy Hudson

Lars Jensen begins his 25th season as head coach of the San
Francisco State University wrestling program. During his
impressive tenure as the mentor of the Gators, Jensen has

talent and competitiveness within the squad. Seven wrestlers
who will be counted on heavily are NCAA qualifier Nick Wilkes
(197), previous National Junior College Championships All-
Americans Josh Williams (133), Matt Steffenson (165), and Brad
Padgett (184), and multi-talented redshirt freshmen Gabe

David Schutter enters his 18th season as the Truman State
University head wrestling coach. Under his guidance, he has
revived the passion for Bulldogs wrestling and has elevated the
program to a level of national respect. In 2004, Schutter men-
tored Merrick Meyer to the 141-pound NCAA Division II
national title. Leading the way this year are All-American Blake
Peterson (165) and NCAA qualifiers Dan Keller (133) and Loyde
Braidlow (285). Additional support could come from returning
team members Rob Nahlik (125), Kaz Hastimotto (125), Mitchell

  • 2. Wrestling U.S.A. Magazine - January 15, 2008 N II he 2008 NCAA Division II National Wrestling Championships will be hosted by Upper Iowa University on March 14-15 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The University of Central Oklahoma, coached by David James, is the defending team champion. One of the most successful coaches in the nation, regardless of division or classification, James’ Bronchos have captured an amazing 12 national championship titles while compiling an extraordinary 239-28 dual meet record against NAIA, NCAAII, and NCAADivision III competition. Now entering his 26th year as head coach, James has coached 44 individual national champions, 153 All-Americans, and has been hon- ored as National Coach of the Year on seven occasions. James also excelled as a wrestler at UCO, claiming two national championships and earning All-American honors four times. This year’s squad will be led by NCAA champion Kyle Evans (141), All-Americans Tyler Zukerman (125), Jason Leavitt (157), and Heath Jolley (184), and NCAA qual- ifier Daniel Morrison (165). Three former National Junior College All-Americans looking to provide some additional firepower are Luke Elmore (149), Paul Mayfield (157), and Tommy McCarthy (174). Other wrestlers with valuable col- lege experience include Michael Walkup (133), Brandon Shelton (141), Dale McClure (141), Brent Sarette (149), Colby Robinson (149), Cody Rowell (165), Kelson Phillips (165), Alvin Metcalf (165), Zach Sikes (165), Kenny Meredith (174), Jarrett Edison (197), Reggie Douglas (197), and Dustin Finn (285). Four high-profile incoming freshmen are Oklahoma state champions Trey Branscum (133), Shawn Ledford (133), Kelly Henderson (157), and Braden Land (285). Under the tutelage of Head Coach Marc Bauer, the University of Nebraska-Kearney has established itself as one of the nation’s premier programs both academically and ath- letically. Since taking over the Loper program prior to the 1999-2000 season, Bauer has led UNK to seven top 10 finish- es at the NCAA Championships – including national runner- up finishes in 2003, 2006, and 2007, two NWCA/Cliff Keen Duals Championships, produced 41 All-Americans and six national champions, and mentored numerous Academic All- Americans. In his 8th year as head coach at Northern State University, Patrick Timm continues to bring the Wolves back to a level of national prominence. He returns four wrestlers with prior NCAA experience. Other returnees include Corbin Surat (125), Dave Schiley (141), Dustin Bonn (149), Phillip Downs (157), Chad Morrison (165), and Jared Little (285). An exceptional transfer from Ridgewater Junior College is two-time South Dakota state champion James Marx (125). Four-time South Dakota state placer Ricky Schiley leads the list of incoming freshmen who also include Alec Anderson (133), Aaron Ford (149), Ryan Larsen (149), Chris Hunt (149), Donnie Bowden (165), Logan Anderson (285), and Jake Michalson (285). After coaching Dana College to the 2006 NAIA Championship title, Steve Costanzo begins his second year as head coach of the St. Cloud State University wrestling program. The Huskies will be very young and inexperienced, but have a great amount of talent and competitiveness within the squad. Seven wrestlers who will be counted on heavily are NCAA qualifier Nick Wilkes (197), previous National Junior College Championships All- Americans Josh Williams (133), Matt Steffenson (165), and Brad Padgett (184), and multi-talented redshirt freshmen Gabe Suarez (141), John Sundgren (157), and Derek Skala (174). Other grapplers with prior collegiate experience include Westy Hanson (125), Michael Markey (149), Chris Kubasch (149), Justin Jones (157), Jairo Sandoval (184), Chris Schiewe (285), and Nolan Boucher (285). Five dynamic incoming freshmen are Wisconsin state champion Jordan Foy (133), Washington state champion Jake Horn (141), and Minnesota state champions Adam Helgeson (141), Tad Merritt (165), and Lucas Munkelwitz (174). David Schutter enters his 18th season as the Truman State University head wrestling coach. Under his guidance, he has revived the passion for Bulldogs wrestling and has elevated the program to a level of national respect. In 2004, Schutter men- tored Merrick Meyer to the 141-pound NCAA Division II national title. Leading the way this year are All-American Blake Peterson (165) and NCAA qualifiers Dan Keller (133) and Loyde Braidlow (285). Shippensburg University, coached by Don Tabor, returns NCAA runner-up Steve Fittery (141) and NCAA qualifiers Dan Nauman (149) and Jack Wilson (165) to provide outstanding leadership. Two extremely talented redshirt freshmen with a great amount of promise are Pennsylvania state placers David Sunderland (157) and Chris Barrick (174). Other experienced grapplers include Andrew Jones (125), Josh Proctor (133), Robert Cross (141), Kirby Fanus (149), Nathan Reese (174), Jon Hade (184), Peter Grodziak (197), and Jon Rhone (285). Three-time West Virginia state champion Dustin Haislip (141) heads a solid incom- ing freshmen class who also include Pennsylvania state placers Gary Atiyeh (125), Bryce Marshall (125), Andrew Ritchie (141), Joey Anceravage (149), and Brandon Miller (197). The Limestone College wrestling team enters its fourth year of competition with high hopes. The squad has continued to get better under Head Coach Ben Stehura since its inaugural season in 2004-05. This year, the Saints will be led by NCAA qual- ifiers Brent Clausing (133) and Trey Moss (285) and regional placers Ian Barker (125), Joby Schreckhise (174), and Mikel Bush (157).
