3. About the American Trail

On Labor Day in 2012, the Smithsonian
National Zoo opened the American Trail. A sea
lion exhibit, the $42 million American Trail
project replaced a less-than-natural pool in
which the creatures swam. The renovated
exhibit features conservation information about
other species, including the grey wolf and bald
eagle.

4. Conclusion

Seals and sea lions serve as the big draw as
they frolic in waves created in two large pools
set in an exhibit inspired by the animals’
natural habitat on the coast of California.
Eventually the pools will hold salt water
instead of fresh water. Visitors to American
Trails enjoy underwater, above-water, and split
views. In addition, an amphitheater provides
space for demonstrations.
