Foodborne illness is preventable. As students head back to school with lunches in hand, parents can use and encourage the safe food-handling practices listed below to protect their little ones.

  1. 1. Wash your hands with soap and warm water. You only need twenty seconds to kill harmful germs.  WASH YOUR HANDS Keep cold foods cold and hot foods hot. Do not open food containers until it's time to eat. Bacteria can multiply on foods that aren’t kept at the proper temperature before eating. Eating harmful bacteria can make you sick.  WAIT FOR MEALTIME While we hate to see food go to waste, it is best to throw away food you don’t eat at meal time that then cannot be properly stored. Eating leftovers that have not been properly stored can lead to you getting sick as well.
