The expansion of New York’s subway system in the
early 20th Century demanded customizing of subway
station names. Mosaics filled that need as they are adaptable:
fields and borders customized to each station created
personalization and interest. Durable, porcelain mosaics

6. The eighteenth century archeological
excavations lead to a rediscovery
of classical antiquity. The ancient
patterns uncovered in these digs were
quickly incorporated in government and
institutional buildings of the era. Mosaic
patterns of this period are
usually classical in tone with the Greek key most widely
used.
Queen Anne homes, popular in
the US during the Victorian
era, were characterized by a decorative
exuberance. With their polychrome
painted facades, wrap around porches,
and tiled entrances, these homes can’t
be missed! Mosaic patterns of that period
are usually very colorful and framed with a
decorative border.

QUEEN ANNE VICTORIAN 1875-1890
NEOCLASSICAL 1885-1930

7. The bungalow home may come in a
variety of sizes, but usually feature
overhanging low-pitched roofs, off-set
entrances and asymmetrical facades. These
characteristics impart a sense of coziness
and stand in contrast to the formality of the
preceding Victorian
era. Mosaic patterns here are simple with the
color themes closely matched to the wall colors.
“Art for all” was the driving principle of
this movement. Art Nouveau originated
in Europe at the end of the 19th century
and featured curvaceous lines and natural
motifs. Mosaics during this time are
characterized by florals and nature elements.

on the craft of all the finishes. Natural
materials are used throughout, wood,
brick, stone, glass and of course, tile,
which offers functional beauty intrinsic
to these homes. Mosaics, composed of rich
colors and earthy tones are representative
of the handmade creative effusion of that
time.

CRAFTSMAN 1900-1935
The term “art deco” was coined from
the 1925 international exhibit held at
Paris’s Musee des Arts Decoratifs. This
period, embodying faith in progress and
modern machinery, featured geometric
shapes, rectilinear patterns and colorful
stylization of the organic and mechanical. Mosaics were
characterized by geometrics and rectilinear lines and
lavish use of color.
ART DECO 1920-1930

9. Art Moderne showed a restraint
following the lavish ornamentation
of Art Deco. Art Moderne - or Streamline
Moderne - took its inspiration from the
growth of speed, travel and technology.This
is reflected in geometric forms, horizontal
lines, chevrons, and zigzags evocative of the
era’s technological advances.Wall surfaces were typically
light and trimmed with bright or darker colors and the
mosaics echoed these color tones.

STREAMLINE MODERNE 1930-1940
MID CENTURY MODERN 1940-1970
Aforward looking style advocating
simplicity in form, usage of
readily available materials and mass
production. Interior design elements
reflected these same principles which
were often simple in form with bold
colors and patterns inspired by the space age
era. Mosaics of this era were characterized
by modular shapes, using variations on classic
patterns like the checkerboard, spiral and weaves
in colors coordinated with the walls.

replicating an original mosaic from a photograph, a historic catalog or even your own creation, the possibilities

19. Installation & Care Guidelines
Prepare the substrate to be as at and de-
fect free as possible. This ensures an even
installation and minimizes mortar pushing
through.
Lay one sheet at a time. Check alignment
and consistency of spacing between
sheets .
Use water to remove any hazing or resi-
due. Seal all porcelain tile and allow to dry
a minimum of 12 hours.
* if applicable
Dry laying the tile is recommended. Adjust
the pattern and cut the tiles to t the
space. Number the sheets and stack them
for quick and correct installation.
Use a grout oat, speed square or block of
wood to push tiles at into mortar while
setting. Repeat step 3 until all sheets are
laid. Let dry.
Use sanded grout, keep grout oat at
with tile surface, do not overwipe and cre-
ate shallow joints. Wait 72 hours for curing.
Reseal all tile/grout as needed.

Manual (Tile Council of North America),
current edition for tile installation stan-
dards and methods.
Apply mortar using a 1/8”- 3/16” V-notch or
U-notch trowel for tiles 2”or smaller. Work
2-4 square foot section at a time to prevent
mortar skim over.
Wait a minimum of 12 hours before remov-
ing face tape. Pull plastic o at the horizon-
tal (against tile). A heat gun can be used
6-8 inches from oor to loosen bond.
