WHERE WOULD MANKIND BE NOW IF WE HAD NEVER OVERCOME OUR FEAR
OF CHANGE AND THE UNKNOWN. WE PERHAPS WOULD STILL BE SWINGING IN
THE TREES OR LIVING IN CAVES. FOR WITHOUT EVOLUTION, WE WOULD NOT
HAVE GROWN AND DISCOVERED THE TRULY GREAT ACHIEVEMENTS OF
MANKIND. WE WOULD BE DOING THE SAME THINGS THAT WE HAD ALWAYS
DONE; - GOING ROUND IN CIRCLES!
THE SAME PRINCIPLE APPLIES TO YOUR OWN BUSINESS AND PERSONAL LIFE
AS IT DOES TO MANKIND’S EVOLUTION. IF YOU DO NOT EVOLVE AND GROW,
THEN HOW WILL YOU EVER FURTHER YOURSELF. YOU WILL FOR YOUR
LIFESPAN SIMPLY RESPOND TO WHAT LIFE THROWS AT YOU AND GO ROUND

IT IS A BIT PERVERSE DON`T YOU THINK THAT WHEN WE SAY THINGS LIKE
OH GOOD OLD SHIELA, SHE DOESN`T EVER CHANGE”, OR “SUCCESS
WOULDN`T CHANGE ME”, WE THINK THAT AS A POSITIVE STATEMENT WHEN
OUR WHOLE REASON FOR BEING ALIVE IS TO EVOLVE AND GROW.

3. IF THE EXPERTS ARE TO BE BELIEVED, WE ARE ONLY SCRATCHING THE
SURFACE OF OUR TRUE POTENTIAL IN ALMOST EVERY ASPECT OF OUR LIVES.
OUR BRAINS CAPACITY FOR KNOWLEDGE AND CREATIVE THOUGHT
GENERATION GOES FAR BEYOND OUR CURRENT COMPREHENSION.
TO CHANGE IS TO HAVE NEW FEELINGS, CHALLENGES, EMOTIONS AND
EXPERIENCES. IF YOU ARE AFRAID OF HEIGHTS, AND YOUR OBJECTIVE IS TO
GET TO THE TENTH FLOOR OF AN OFFICE BLOCK “and look over the edge”,
YOU WILL HAVE A DOUBLE EDGED SWORD TO DEAL WITH. YOU WANT TO GET
UP THERE, BUT ARE AFRAID OF THE CHANGE THAT WILL BE FORCED UPON
YOU IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE YOUR GOAL.
YOUR COMFORT ZONE IS ON THE GROUND FLOOR, BUT YOUR GOAL IS ON
THE TENTH FLOOR.
TO REACH YOUR GOAL YOU MUST STEP OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE AND
GROW. BY GROWING AND EXPERIENCING NEW EXPERIENCES AND EMOTIONS,
YOU INCREASE THE SIZE OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE, AND TO REACH THAT
STAGE AGAIN WILL BE EASIER SECOND TIME AROUND THAN IT WAS THE
FIRST TIME.
THIS PROCESS CAN BE REPEATED UNTIL YOU ARE RUNNING UP THE STAIRS
TO THE TENTH FLOOR AND ADMIRING THE VIEW FROM THE TOP.

2: WHY MASSIVE GOALS ?
IF YOU HAVE EVER READ A BOOK ON GOAL SETTING, OR BEEN ON COURSES
OR HEARD SPEAKERS TALK ABOUT GOAL SETTING, THEN YOU WILL HAVE
HEARD THE TWO WORDS MOST USED IN THE LANGUAGE OF GOAL SETTING.
THEY SAY THAT YOUR GOALS SHOULD BE
- “REALISTIC AND ACHIEVABLE”.
WELL I USED TO BELIEVE THAT TO, - UNTIL THE UNQUESTIONABLE VOLUME
OF RESEARCH THAT I HAVE UNDERTAKEN HAS PROVEN THAT TOP ACHIEVERS
DO NOT SET REALISTIC AND ACHIEVABLE GOALS.
FAR FROM IT !
MOST USE WORDS SUCH AS MASSIVE, LARGE, DREAM, AMBITION, HUGE,
ENORMOUS, AND ONE MILLIONNAIRE BUSINESSMAN EVEN SAID -
“BIG …… FAT …… HAIRY GOALS”.

5. IN FACT, I CAN REMEMBER ONE RESEARCH INTERVIEW WITH A
NEURO-SCIENTIST WHERE HE POPINTED OUT: “CAN YOU THINK OF
MANY (OR ANY?) OF MAN OR WOMANKINDS GREATEST
ACHIEVEMENTS THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN ACHIEVED IF THEY HAD SET
“REALISTIC AND ACHIEVABLE GOALS?”
I WAS SO CHALLENGED BY THIS THAT I QUESTIONED ITS VALIDITY AND
DESIGNED A MODEL THAT MADE IT EASY TO APPLY WHAT TOP ACHIEVERS
HAD TOLD ME ABOUT THE WAY IN WHICH THEY SET GOALS.
TO TEST THIS BIZZARRE THEORY, I WENT TO A LOCAL CANCER RESEARCH
CHARITY THAT WAS PART OF THE NATIONAL CANCER RSEEARCH CAMPAIGN
BASED HERE IN THE U.K.
I WENT TO THEM WITH AN OFFER OF RAISING £50’000 IN ONE EVENT TO
TEST MY RESEARCHED MODEL
I EXPECTED THEM TO WELCOME ME WITH OPEN ARMS BUT I FOUND THAT
THEY GREETED MY OFFER OF APPLYING MY GOAL SETTING MODEL WITH A
STATEMENT THAT SOUNDED LIKE THIS:
“you are on your own, you have no experience of fund raising, you are
using a model that has not been proven, you only have your spare time

6. and it took seven of our experienced part time fundraisers over six
Months to organise our biggest event which raised just over £48’000.
With respect, what makes you think that you can raise £50’000 in one
event, on your own in your spare time, using an unproven model?”
IT WAS AT THIS POINT THAT I REMEMBERED THE WORDS OF KRISS
AKABUSI mbe.
WHEN I INTERVIEWED KRISS HE SAID THAT HE BELIEVED THAT
“TOP ACHIEVERS SHOULD BE LOOKED INTO AND NOT UP TO !”
THIS STUCK IN MY MIND AND I THOUGHT THAT IF THESE TOP ACHIEVERS
WERE RIGHT ABOUT MASSIVE GOALS, THEN I MUST PROVE IT TO BE RIGHT
OR WRONG.
I TEAMED UP WITH ONE OF THE PART TIME CHARITY WORKERS AND
TOGETHER WE DID NOT BREAK THE CHARITIES FUNDRAISING RECORD.
WHAT WE ACTUALLY DID WAS BREAK THE RECORDS OF THE FULL TIME
FUNDRAISING TEAM AT CANCER RESEARCH UK.
IN ONE EVENT “on our own, with no experience of fund raising, using a model that
had not been proven, and in our spare time” WE RAISED OVER £288’000 IN ONE
EVENT.

7. SINCE THIS TIME THE MASSIVE GOAL MODEL HAS HELPED BUSINESSES AND
INDIVIDUALS IN MANY WAYS TO FAR EXCEED WHAT WAS BELIEVED TO BE
THE MAXIMUM OR “REALISTIC” GOAL THAT COULD BE ACHIEVED.
PEOPLE HAVE USED THE MODEL TO IMPROVE OFFICE EFFICIENCY, INCREASE
SALES, STOP SWEARING, RAISE MASSES OF MONEY FOR CHARITIES, ACHIEVE
LIFE LONG GOALS, SWIM WITH SHARKS, BECOME A PUBLISHED AUTHOR,
START A BUSINESS, GET QULIFICATIONS, SAVE THEIR MARRIAGE, GET FIT
AND LOOSE WEIGHT, TO NAME BUT A FEW.
RIGHT NOW IT IS BEING USED IN BUSINESSES, SCHOOLS, PERSONAL LIVES
AND IN THE SPORTS ARENA TO INCREASE EFFECTIVENESS, ACHIEVE MORE,
AND PUSH BOUNDARIES OF CONVENTION AND LIMITING BELIEF.

8. 3: The “Aha” moment !
DO YOU WANT TO KNOW HOW THIS MODEL WORKS ?
I WAS THE OWNER OF A SMALL BUT QUALITY CATERING AND EVENT
MANAGEMENT BUSINESS THAT HAD A SUPERB RECORD IN CUSTOMER
SERVICE AND YET STRUGGLED TO GROW, AND I WAS LOOKING FOR SOMEONE
OR SOMETHING TO BLAME FOR THIS.
AFTER MUCH PROBING, TESTING AND RESEARCH I DECIDED TO MY SURPRISE
THAT IT WAS MYSELF THAT WAS LIMITING THE GROWTH OF MY BUSINESS AS
I WAS A CONTROL BASED MANAGER WHO WOULD NOT EASILY DELEGATE
IMPORTANT JOBS AND SO BECAUSE I WAS DOING EVERYTHING, THE
BUSINESS WAS NOT GROWING.
AFTER GOING ON MNAY COURSES, READING MANY BOOKS AND GETTING
CONSULTANTS INTO MY BUSINESS, I GREW FRUSTRATED AT THE TIRED AND
MALIGNED THEORIES THAT WERE LITTLE MORE THAN “ONE PERSONS
OPINION” OR WORSE STILL, JUST A RE-HASH OF LOTS OF OTHER PEOPLES
MANAGEMENT MATERIAL.

9. SO….. I STARTED TO INTERVIEW TOP ACHIEVERS TO FIND OUT FORMYSELF
WHAT IT IS THAT THEY DO AND HOW THEYTHINKA ND BEHAVE THAT MADE
THEM (SEEMINGLY) SO MUCH MORE EFFECTIVE THAN OTHERS AROUND THEM.
WHAT I LEARNT HAS CHANGED MY LIFE FOR EVER…….. AND MANY OTHERS
WHO HAVE TRIED TO PROVE THE THEORIES RIGHT…. OR WRONG.
WELL IT WAS DURING A RESEARCH INTERVIEW WITH A WEALTHY AND
HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSMAN (AT THE TIME HE WAS IN THE TOP 30
RICHEST MEN IN THE UK) THAT THE “PENNY DROPPED”.
I ASK ALL OF MY INTERVIEWEES A QUESTION AROUND THEIR GOALS THAT I
HOPE WILL DRAW OUT AN ANSWER THAT WILL CHANGE THE WORLD FOR
EVER, AND AFTER (AT THE TIME) NEARLY FOUR YEARS OF INTERVIEWS I WAS
GETTING PRETTY CHEESED OFF WITH WHAT I THOUGHT WERE VERY
MEDIOCRE AND AVERAGE ANSWERS TO SUCH AN IMPORTANT QUESTION.
THE INTERVIEWEE SHALL BE CALLED RALPH……..
I ASKED RALPH WHAT IT WAS HE DID THAT MADE HIM SO CONSISTANTLY
EFFECTIVE AND MORE SUCCESSFUL THAN OTHERS AROUND HIM.
THE CONVERSATIION WENT SOMETHING LIKE THIS:

10. “I suppose all I do is …………… well I suppose what I do is………. I set
very large goals…….. I think of things I might have to do to achieve
that goal…………., I put them in an order of priority, and then I take
action. Every day I try to do something towards that goal, even if it is
just a phone call or a letter, I do something. …… And if I want the goal
badly enough I will never, ever give in………………. yeah, I suppose
that is what I do”
NOW MY BRAIN LEFT MY BODY AND PUT MY MOUTH IN CHARGE FOR A FEW
MOMENTS AND I HEARD MYSELF SAYING BACK TO RALPH….
“do you expect me to believe that your MASSIVE achievements” AND
LIKE AN IDIOT I READ HIS ACHIEVEMENTS BACK TO HIM…. LIKE HE DIDN’T
KNOW THEM ALREADY?……..
“these MASSIVE achievements are down to you setting large goals,
thinking of things you might have to do to achieve those goals,
prioritising them, taking action and never giving in…………..…
…………………. REALLY ?!?!?!?!?!?!?”
THERE WAS A SILENCE THAT SEEMED TO LAST FOR EVER……..
RALPH THEN ALMOST SHOUTED “DO YOU DOUBT ME YOUNG MAN !!!!!!!!”
I APPOLOGISED AT ONCE AND WE MOVED ON WITH THE INTERVIEW.
THERE WAS NO DOUBTING THE CONVICTION OF THIS MAN.

11. I WENT HOME AND TRAWLED THE INTERVIEW NOTES FROM THE RESEARCH I
HAD DONE TO DATE AND THERE, LEAPING FROM THE PAGES WAS MY ANSWER
THAT I HAD MISSED BEFORE.
MOST TOP ACHIEVERS ARE AWARE OF DELIBERATELY SETTING
MASSIVE GOALS,…. HUGE GOALS…….., BIG FAT HAIRY GOALS !
ISN`T IT FUNNY HOW THROUGHOUT HISTORY, WE HAVE LEARNT OF TOP
ACHIEVERS WHO OVERCAME SEEMINGLY INCREDIBLE ODDS TO ACHIEVE
THEIR GOALS.
WERE THEY SPECIAL PEOPLE WITH HIDDEN POWERS THAT WE CAN NOT
ATTAIN?
NO ! - THEY WERE MERE MORTALS LIKE YOU AND I WHO BEHAVED AND
THOUGHT IN A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT WAY TO MOST OTHERS.
WELL, LET US TAKE ONE FINE EXAMPLE. A GREAT AMERICAN PRESIDENT, AND
A MAN WHO (DEPENDING UPON YOUR POLITICAL PERSUASION) IS REVERED
AND REMEMBERED BY A NATION WHICH RATE HIM AS POSSIBLY THE BEST
LEADER OF THEIR COUNTRY TO DATE.
THE VALUE OF COURAGE, PERSISTENCE, AND PERSEVERANCE HAS RARELY
BEEN ILLUSTRATED MORE CONVINCINGLY THAN IN THE LIFE STORY OF THIS
GREAT MAN.

13. FAILURE IS, AFTERALL, THE PRICE OF IMPROVEMENT, FOR NOTHING WOULD
EVER HAVE BEEN IMPROVED, CREATED OR INVENTED IF SOMEONE HAD NOT
FIRST DRAWN UP PLANS, BUILT MODELS, FAILED, RE-DRAWN PLANS, AND
THEN MADE BETTER MODELS.
A FEW BUTS, MUST DO’S AND PRE-REQUISITES.
WHEN I INTERVIEWED ONE OF THE WORLDS LEADING COACHING MENTORS
HE TOLD ME OF HIS CLIENT BASE THAT HAD IN IT SOME OF THE WORLDS
LEADING ENTREPRENEURS AND BUSINESMEN AND WOMEN.
TO MY SHOCK AND AMAZEMENT HE WENT ON TO EXPLAIN HOW HE BEGAN
HIS COACHING PROCES BY GETTING THE COACHEE TO UNDERSTAND A FEW
BASIC PRINCIPLES OF “LIFE”, TAKEN FROM HIS PRIOR EXPERIENCES OF THE
BHUDDIST FAITH.
BUTS ……….
SURE, SET A LARGE GOAL, BUT MAKE SURE THAT IT STRETCHES YOU IN WAYS
THAT WILL HELP YOU TO LEARN AND GROW AND GET NEW EXPERIENCES,
MEET NEW PEOPLE, OR CHANGE OTHERS LIVES FOR THE BETTER.

HE SAID THAT “I TEACH ALL OF MY CLIENTS THAT IF YOU GO AFTER THINGS
TO MAKE YOU HAPPY THEN YOU ARE DOOMED TO MISERY”
WHEN I ASKED HIM TO EXPLAIN HE WENT ONTO SAY HOW TRULY HAPPY AND
SUCCESSFUL MEN AND WOMEN HAVE A WORK LIFE BALANCE AND DO THINGS
FOR THE RIGHT REASONS. ETHICS, MORALS, PRINCIPLES, WHATEVER YOU
WOULD CALL THEM.
IF YOU ARE UNHEALTHY, UNHAPPY OR GRUMPY AND YOU GO AFTER A GOAL
YOU “MIGHT” JUST GET IT, BUT WHEN YOU GET IT YOU WILL STILL BE THE
SAME OLD UNHEALTHY, UNHAPPY, AND GRUMPY PERSON THAT STARTED ON
LIFES JOURNEY OF ACHIEVEMENT AND SO YOU THEN GO AFTER SOMETHING
ELSE IN SEARCH OF HAPPINESS AND YOU NEVER FIND IT.
THE SECRET IS TO GET HAPPY, AND THEN GO AFTER THINGS.
THAT WAY YOU ARE FAR MORE LIKELY TO ENJOY THE ACHIEVEMENT PROCESS
AND THE HARD WORK THAT IT TAKES TO ACHIEVE. THE ACTUAL
ACHIEVEMENT IS A DIRECT CONSEQUENCE OF BEING HAPPY AND YOU ARE
NOT PINNING YOURHAPPINESS ON THE ACHIEVEMENT.

LOOK AT YOUR PERSONAL AND CORPOARET GOALS AND ASKYOURSELF WHY
AM I/ARE WE DOING THIS. CHOOSE YOUR ATTITUDE AND GET HAPPY. THEN
AND ONLY THEN, GO AFTER THINGS. YOU WILL BE AMAZED AT THE RESULTS.

PYRAMIDS ARE SEEN BY MANY PEOPLE AS A SYMBOL OF GREAT POWER AND
STRENGTH. THEY HAVE BEEN MARVELLED THROUGHOUT TIME AS A SIGN OF
MASSIVE ACHIEVEMENT, FOR THE ORIGINALS TOOK MANY YEARS TO BUILD
AND WERE MADE BY HAND WITH ROCK CARRIED MANY MILES BY MANY
HUNDREDS OF MEN. I WONDER IF ANYBODY THOUGHT TO TELL THE GUY
WHO THOUGHT UP THE IDEA FOR A PYRAMID THAT IT WAS A TASK TOO BIG
TO BECOME REALITY?
BUT THINK FOR A MINUTE AS TO HOW A PYRAMID IS BUILT. THEY DO NOT
BRING EVERY ROCK TO THE SITE FOR ERECTION AND BUILD IT ALL IN A DAY.
WHAT THEY DO IS PLACE A FOUNDATION LEVEL OF ROCKS CUT TO SIZE WITH
A TIER ON TOP OF THAT OF SIMILAR SHAPED ROCKS, AND THEN ANOTHER,
AND THEN ANOTHER. THEY KEEP DOING THIS UNTIL THEY HAVE ONLY THE
TOP AND FINAL STONE TO LAY, AND THEN THEIR GOAL HAS BEEN ACHIEVED.
YOUR GOALS OR CHALLENGES CAN BE ACHIEVED OR OVERCOME IN THE SAME
WAY. TREAT EACH BRICK OR EACH LEVEL AS AN INDIVIDUAL OR SPECIFIC
TASK OR LIST OF TASKS THAT WILL FURTHER YOU TOWARDS YOUR
ACHIEVEMENT.

Six steps to success.
1:
HOLD A CREATIVE MEETING WITH “LIKE MINDED” PEOPLE AWAY FROM THE
“USUAL” ENVIRONMENT TO LIST AS MANY THINGS OR IDEAS AS YOU CAN
THINK OF THAT YOU MAY HAVE TO DO, WILL HAVE TO DO, OR MUST DO IF
YOU ARE TO ACHIEVE YOUR GOAL
2:
IF YOU HAVE FIFTY THINGS IN YOUR LIST, MAKE A PYRAMID WITH ONE
HUNDRED BLOCKS IN IT AS WHEN YOU ARE ON YOUR JOURNEY TOWARDS
ACHIEVEING THIS GOAL, MANY OTHER “THINGS TO DO“ WILL CROP UP AND
YOU WILL HAVE BLOCKS IN WHICH TO WRITE OR DRAW YOUR ACTION.
3:
PUT THE TASKS INTO AN ORDER OF IMPORTANCE WITH THE MOST URGENT
OR IMPORTANT BEING NUMBER ONE. IN THE BOTTOM BLOCKS OF THE
PYRAMID WRITE OR DRAW SOMETHING THAT REPRESENTS EACH TASK, WITH
THE MOST IMPORTANT TASKS BEING IN THE BOTTOM BLOCKS OR ROWS OF
YOUR PYRAMID.
AFTERALL, A PYRAMID IS A STRUCTURE LIKE A BUILDING, AND WITHOUT
FOUNDATIONS ANY BUILDING WOULD FALL DOWN.

19. SO CREATE YOUR OWN FOUNDATION BLOCKS THAT YOU KNOW ARE THE
MOST ESSENTIAL TO YOUR SUCCESS AND PLACE THEM IN THE BOTTOM

LOOK AT THE TASKS AND SEE WHICH ARE THE BIGEST TASKS AND ASK
YOURSELF THIS QUESTION;
“IF ALL I HAD TO DO WAS “THIS” TASK – COULD I DO IT ?”.
IF THE ANSWER IS YES, THEN THAT IS OKAY, BUT IF THE ANSWER IS NO,
THEN YOU CAN GO THROUGH THIS PROCESS WITH EACH BLOCK THAT IS
STILL A MAJOR CHALLENGE UNTIL YOU HAVE A MASTER PLAN THAT MAY HAVE
ONE OR MAY HAVE A DOZEN PYRAMIDS – EACH PYRAMID REPRESENTING A
BLOCK OR TASK THAT IS IN ITSELF, A VERY HARD CHALENGE - BUT YOU
KNOW THAT WHEN YOU LOOK AT EACH AND EVERY TASK OR BLOCK, THAT
YOU CAN AND WILL ACHIEVE IT.

TAKE ACTION ! – NOW !
– EVERY DAY ATTEMPT TO DO AT LEAST ONE THING THAT WILL TAKE YOU
TOWARDS YOUR GOAL. EVEN IF IT IS JUST A PHONE CALL !
